So, there's been a little bit going on with my fleet of late. I fitted the Powerflex rear beam bushes to the Corsa, definitely makes a difference, but could still be better. Also fitted the AEM wideband O2 gauge as well. Combo, not much has changed, but there's a Corsa B GSi sitting in front of it, donating some parts to the Combo's cause. The Beamer hasn't really been touched, but it's getting a new set of eyes next week (when they get here).

And the Transit. Well, at 124,000 I have gotten a warning coming up saying "Engine Malfunction - Service Now", thought I'd check the codes, P0048 Boost Control Solenoid Out of Range high reading. Take it into Ford dealer, where that today they isolated the issue down to a faulty electronic wastegate actuator. Thing is, you can't replace the actuator without replacing the entire turbo (I'm guessing each one might be specifically calibrated for each turbo). That's okay with me, it's still under warranty until 200,000kms, so it's not costing me. Well, it is in terms of hiring a van and the fact the Transit's also getting a 120k service along with new brakes, but still it could be much worse.

HUH ?! They better redesign as a fault under warranty period is expensive for them. Ah well, new turbo then.

The turbo used on the 2.2 CYF4 Duratorq engine is a Garrett GT1749VK, the V being for a variable nozzle (or geometry) turbine and the K for electronic actuator. I'm guessing the electronic actuator itself is possibly somewhat "paired" or calibrated with each turbo. Can't really see much of an advantage in it over a mechanical actuator to be honest. But yeah, I'm glad they're doing it and not me. FWD van with the turbo mounted between engine and firewall, that's gonna be fun.

Well after around 9 months of having the headlining being held up mainly from thumb tacks. I finally decided while on holidays to getting it fixed.
A bit of googling 1st to see how everything came off. So I didn't break or snap anything.
Had a look at Spotlight to see what would be suitable, as I had decided on having Black. As the original colour was light Grey. I know some won't like the black. But I actually prefer it.
The material I got is a Faux Suede. Which was on special for $14 a meter. 2 mtrs was plenty. Also used Sellys Kwik Grip Vertical. Which is good for temps up to 130c.
Since I had some material left over. I also covered the A pillar pieces with the suede, so it blends in from the dash through to the headlining.
Total cost $60. Took me over a week, due to finding time. But it could easily done in 2-3 days. 1st day to remove, clean & glue the material. 2nd day to trim & refit to the car.

Cheers. Was the 1st time that I've ever tackled anything like this.
I got a 1lt tin of Kwik Grip from Bunnings for around $25. Used just over half of that
Started with just the middle 1st till around 20cm from the edges. Got that all smoothed out with a credit card. As you can see in the pic
Then done the outside, so I could form around the curves & indents from the grab handles & sunvisor

Wasn't that hard really. Not as hard as I thought it was going to be. And the headlining only took just 45mins to put back in with all the grab handles & sun visor etc

^^^ Mt Panorama is such a great circuit, it just flows. Laps under closed conditions should be on everyones bucket list!

After 6mths of "outa sight outa mind" in the garage, and plans for the car on indefinite hold, the SRi finally got a much needed wash.
A quick buff and the right lighting, and she still scrubs up ok.

So after the Corsa hit the rollers the other day with a result about 20kW under what it should be, I contacted Tobias from EDS. Sent him the details of the car and the dyno sheet. He sends me a new file. I flash new file and take car a drive. I step on the throttle, it launches very hard with wheels spinning and I'm still grinning ear to ear about it. I think he found the missing killerwasps and gave it some more. Like it bloody needed it, lol. And he told me the map had less torque. Well, f*** me, that must mean less torque than a truck, because it pulls along very hard now.

It's still attached, but is probably going to fall off in a few days. Pretty annoyed lol, I was trying to fit the rear beam spherical bearing bushings and while it was all disconnected from the car it fell off the jack stands. My thumb ended up in the mix on the one side, and the other side ended up dangling by the brake line. I'll have to inspect it closer to see how it fared, but it looks stretched and I'm not sure if I trust it now when the car sees so much track time. I should have just disconnected all the sensors and lines and eased the whole axle down onto the ground with a jack instead of trying to keep it suspended. Lesson learned for next time.

Grabbed a VDO one off ebay for $105.... slight saving over the 4x quote Holden provided! Chucked it on on the weekend and the car is heaps smoother... even allowing for the massive misfire once it had failed.

Little bit shorter now, still need to weld in the tow hitch but it ends up 175mm shorter and 100mm further up. Should stop the embarrassing drag it's bum down the drop off the 80 is prone to! If the bodywork cops any damage it'll get cut off and plated up to the bottom of the tail lights.

Reset SII on dashboard, replaced missing thermo fan cowl shroud Torx head anchor bolt to radiator frame, made new magnetic sump plug utilising neodymium cylindrical magnet, removed headlining mounted courtesy light array and replaced blown main 18W festoon globe with 16 x CoB LED light replacement instead.

Can't believe the cheap quality construction of that headlining courtesy light assembly. So cheap & nasty. Nothing soldered, nothing insulated. Just all clip together strips of exposed copper sheet to provide the power and then a massively hot 18W filament globe to melt the plastic all around when the globe holders break their mounts! Just as well there's no sound deadening insulation in the roof space otherwise the whole car would burn to the ground in no time. 16 LEDs on a board make a massive difference to interior lighting compared to the 18W festoon. It's like a supernova inside the car now when you open a door.

Slowly getting annoyed with the way the Astra is starting to look. Yes Astra's are bad for how long the paint lasts. Especially this colour, as all the car I have seen as the same.
I was going to go body colour with the lower skirts & mirror caps. But as I done both the front & back Holden emblem in satin black, It has turned out quite good.
Door side mouldings will be done in body colour. The bonnet thou is another story. Might look to replace it with something in better condition & wrap it is satin black vinyl
The roof is in not to bad condition. So I will wrap that in satin black in a few weeks..

maybe white, gloss or carbon fibre look shows up less imperfections but I've seen them before with the matte black wrap and the smallest dent showed up, even some scratches, didn't look nice. Better respray bonnet then.

Sand the bonnet flat/smooth first. Even the slightest imperfection on the bonnet will be exaggerated/amplified by the vinyl wrap

Yeah I know about the vinyl wrap. Hence why getting a better bonnet. With that & the wrap would be cheaper than getting it resprayed. Which would look better than wrap thou.
The car mechanically is pretty good. Runs like a dream for coming up to 297,000k's. I get 6.2 - 6.6 lts per 100klms. But the paint makes it look worse than the car is.
But around this time next year, after the almost $1000 a month child support finishes, I will be looking at getting a new car. Hopefully the new Astra GTC's will be coming out around that time??? But that is another story..

Just looking at doing cheapish stuff I can do myself just to improve the look a bit.. :)

Transit's done like 147,000kms in just under three years from new (3 years in July). Corsa on the other hand has done about 28,000kms in just shy of four years, about 13,000kms of that with the Z20LET in it. BMW has done about 6,000kms since September last year and the Combo, well it's done more kms on a trailer since I've owned it, which is about 100kms.

Corsa's copped an intercooler upgrade. Gone from the apparently 400bhp capable TX Autosport cooler to the Airtec kit, apparently good for 350bhp. Still got more work to do before it's back on the road again.

Also, the Beamer's had a consistent shuddering issue at around 80-90km/h and when braking since I've owned it. From what I gather, upper control arms are shot. Yay.

To be honest, I was going to wait for the DNA/MTC Mk4 GSi cooler which is a 100mm thick core. I'd have no bumper left if I were to fit that. The Airtec kit (also intended for the Mk4/TS Astra), is a 60mm core and doesn't require any cutting. But this unit is rated to 350bhp and it's more than twice the size of the TX Autosport cooler I was running, which is basically rebadged, cheap Chinese eBay crap and that allegedly can run up to 400bhp. Even if the Airtec figures for it's own cooler are at the maximum side of things, it still suits me fine, as I probably won't up the power any more than that anyway. Stage 3.5 in a Corsa shell is nuts enough as it is.

Also, the Beamer's had a consistent shuddering issue at around 80-90km/h and when braking since I've owned it. From what I gather, upper control arms are shot. Yay.

Actually mate, I have some experience with Beamers. The shimmy you report is not at the right speed nor in the right circumstance to be upper control arm bushes. If it's under braking, you have a braking issue. Most probably warped rotors caused by the black-out OE Textar or Pagid pads gouging the F outta the rotors. If the model is one of the higher end versions fitted with multi-piston calipers, then you could also have a siezed piston. The upper control arm bushes shimmy occurs between 100-110km/h at a constant speed with no braking or acceleration load. Beamers of all flavours are well known for it. It's why you don't change BMW wheels for aftermarket versions with the wrong offset, hub bore etc. dimensions. Anything you put on with even a tiny difference in front suspension geometry will have you chasing steering shimmy problems constantly. +1 is about as far as you can go for wheels on a BMW (with correct model offset + everything else) without antagonising an already very sensitive front suspension/steering setup on Beamers.

I have to laugh everytime I see some boy-racer BMW with 22" wheels wrapped in licorice strip rubber driving past. I know the owner thinks it looks fully-sik, but I know just what a piece of sh!t it undoubtedly is to drive. Before you start tearing into the suspension looking for something wrong, make sure you have the right dimension wheels on there first. It could save you a hell of a lot of time & money.

on another note, drained my cars oil out of curiosity and found the dealer didn't do the 5000k (18 month old) oil change I requested before delivery.. the oil and filter was quite black even nearly 7000kms. How holden allows the J's to go for 15000km's before their first service is beyond me.

And strangely it was overfilled by nearly a litre.

Your answer's right there. It's Holden. The very last thing they care about is the good health or longevity of your car! The only thing they (and all dealers of all manufacturers) care about these days is when you're next going to buy another brand new car. The latest brand new car is the greatest thing ever right up until the moment you actually commit to buying it. Then it's the biggest pile of crap ever made and you really should update to the latest model which is sooo much better than that bunkie old shitter you're driving around in now. That just the new car salesman mantra. Anything the service guys or new car documentation writers can do to speed up that process by way of making sure your old car has a shorter life than technically possible is all good for them. "Recommended service intervals" are not for your or your car's benefit, they are for the benefit of the manufacturer, and the manufacturer doesn't make any money while you hold on to your existing car only spending $50 or so every year changing the oil. They need you to spend $30,000 every year buying the new model and scrapping the old one. It's exactly the same with the recommended tyre pressures on the door jamb placard. Admittedly that's a very old scam now that virtually everyone is wise to and routinely ignores, but for a long time people were driving around on tyres only pumped up to 22-24psi as the manufacturer recommended pressure. Recommended for the tyre manufacture that is, so you'll be back ASAP for another set of tyres to replace the ones with the prematurely worn away shoulders. I bet you'll struggle to find anyone with an ounce of common sense driving around today on tyres pumped up to only 24psi.

First thoughts, full leather seats are good, car is sluggish (but its brand new) and it's MASSIVE. Had trouble fitting that in my garage. Wouldn't be a car I'd buy unless i would need it in case the wife has triplets. Boot is huge and the car isn't that high off the ground. Interior looks flimsy with lots of hard plastics but it's very high. I think it'll stay parked over the weekend and we'll use the pug instead. Nice thought that they gave me a car on loan.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170609/39460d98421f4e23a53423f5676f3abf.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170609/df41398e702d9c383d21b0c906bf6eb4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170609/dccaea27fca5222cb034cabfd91bacbf.jpg

any car brand can have lemons.

Tru dat, but not the case with mine in particular. I bought a MkIV Golf without doing due diligence in an expert VW owner's forum in advance to find out about all the MkIV Golf problems which are confined to the electrical system mainly. It was only after buying it though and wishing to fix a few minor problems myself did I fully realise just how well designed VW's are to not be worked on. The shockingly expensive parts availability that makes BMW parts look reasonably priced, the fact they only sell 'kits' of parts and not individual pieces makes this aspect even worse. Oh, sir has a cracked window regulator guide? Well, you'll need to buy an entire new door then. That'll be $5,000.

The build quality is also horrendous. Oh they look fabulous on the outside and even everything you touch has a nice feel to it. That's what sucked me in too. It's only when you need to start taking things apart to fix some minor annoyances do you realise it's all held together with the cheapest, most brittle plastic known to man and an almost obsessive dedication to minimising metal fastenings. Huge interior trim panels are held in place with at most 2 screws (if you're lucky - more common is one or even none at all) and a whole bunch of plastic clip rivets that are designed to snap if ever taken apart.

VW's are very cheap cars, trying to pass themselves off as quality ones. A job they actually do very well. I know I was fooled. I won't make the same mistake again though. I replaced mine with the Astra, which is also a cheap car, but it's not masquerading as a cheap car. It knows what it is and doesn't try to fool you into believing it's anything else. The Astra has been head & shoulders more reliable and vastly cheaper to source parts for than the VW I had.

mondo
22nd August 2017, 05:06 PM
i can appreciate the frustration your poor experience caused you and i'm not trying to diminish it, but, i have quite a few friends and a couple of relatives that own modern VW's, one who actually races one and his mates own and operate a VW specialist workshop. None of them have related poor experiences and the research i did on the R36 before buying showed it to be a good, reliable vehicle. I will reserve the right for you to say "i told you so" if it all goes pear shaped ;)

i have quite a few friends and a couple of relatives that own modern VW's, one who actually races one and his mates own and operate a VW specialist workshop.

To be fair, my car was never bought for racing or modification at all. I was just using it as a basic domestic transport conveyance with no sporting pretensions whatsoever. I do like whatever it comes with to work though and that was possibly my downfall. I don't think VW's are intended to be fixed. Certainly they're design is engineered to make fixing them as difficult and expensive as humanly possible. I can fully appreciate that owning a VW workshop would naturally make you a big fan of them. What's not to love about being able to charge customers with the cars huge $$$ for what should be simple fixes.

You might be alright with an R36. The real wallet killers are the tiny supercharged + turbocharged diesels with double-clutch autos. So many stories of John Hughes having to throw complete new engines + gearboxes at them under warranty. I wasn't so afflicted having only a very conventional 2 litre petrol, but even that burnt oil like nobody's business which I later found out was perfectly 'normal' and to be expected for that car.

mondo
22nd August 2017, 11:06 PM
yeah Mk4 Golfs burn oil. have heard that before. i've not owned a VW before, but like i said, nothing i have read about the R36 waved a red flag. I bought a Volvo S60R last year with an engine i am intimately familiar having had 2 previously in my XR5's, yet when i took that for it's first service it cost me $6k in repairs. You never know with a second hand car. as for the DSG warrranty stuff, that was the later 7 speed versions primarily in Golf and Polo models. I knew a guy who worked in VW customer care at the time that was all going on. interesting times for him.

anything Euro and Prestige is going to cost a bit more to maintain.

and no Dutchy, not a Jeep. all will be revealed when the bloody thing actually arrives. It is currently on a train between Perth and Adelaide.

Yikes! I would have sh!t!

I knew a guy who worked in VW customer care at the time that was all going on. interesting times for him.
A refrigeration mechanic mate had one too. Think it was one of the little 1.3litre diesel things with both (belt driven) supercharger+turbocharging with the DSG. He had so many problems with it, when the trauma was finally over he worked out it actually spent more total time in the possession of John Hughes than it did him during his period of ownership. Eventually John Hughes gave up and imported an entire new complete powertrain assembly from Germany (motor+gearbox+DME), installed it and then bought the fixed car back off him because it was obvious he wouldn't even be able to give it away because it had such a bad reputation amongst his social circle at that point.

My experience was no where near that bad, but it was bad enough that I steer clear of all VAG cars now.

10 years for my GTI also. 149k on the clock now.

Can't say it hasn't had any issues, but they were mostly under warranty.

In the past 6 years, I've only had to replace the PCV valve. Not perfect but not bad for a 10 year old car.

Well, I've only owned one VW and it was a T4 Transporter with the 2.0L AAC petrol engine. Thirsty as feck, leaked oil and water, had 360,000kms on the clock and it was practically invincible. Not to mention, still better to drive than any Hiace for that matter. If any brand is one that I avoid in regards to getting a lemon, it's Hyundai with their iTurd van. I'm not going to get into it, as most of you are probably sick of my bitching about it by now and anyone that thinks they're great probably hasn't put too many kms on one.

Having said that, someone collected the rear quarter of my Transit the other day. I'm willing to bet that when it goes in for repairs, the insurance company will hire me a van and it will be that one van I dread too or a Renault Master, which is equally shit if it's auto.

The Astra looks a bit sad today. Found a rather large puddle of coolant on the floor this morning. Still had a bottle of red so filled her back up and got down to the local Holden guys. They were kind enough to take the car in and have a look. 3 hoses cracked. I asked why it wouldn't have been spotted when the car was in about 2 months ago for the thermostat recall and if the work done during the recall has anything to do with these 3 cracked hoses. In the back of my mind i was worried about the price of those 3 hoses and i had this clear vision of me being raped, without any lube, by the stealers. I put on my cutest possible face, squeezed my butt-cheeks as tight as i could and asked those dreadful 2 words ; how much? he proceeded that they would have renewed those during the recall work if they were leaking but they weren't . So a very amicable price of 130 dollars all inclusive to renew all coolant hoses has been agreed on. Does my arse hurt, a little bit because thats the equivalent to 3 cases plus a six-pack of beer. Am i happy with that price? you bet i am because a complete hose set will normally set you back much more.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170828/6ac989e953de103c1cbf001df4f258ad.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170828/b1036bdf40fde358edaaf8a6420aab49.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170828/54063fc9c70e1b477e600b9f7ef40317.jpg

After finding a small amount of coolant in the engine bay some weeks ago, i planned to order a new overflow bottle from the UK. Till 2 days ago there was a rather large puddle on the garage floor. Can't wait 2 weeks on a new one from the UK but luckily Holden was able to supply a new one rather fast and quite cheap. Turns out the old bottle had a large crack on the bottom. All fixed [emoji3]
Car also came op in the system for the Takata airbag recall so I just have to wait for further instructions from Holden.

Have had an awful grinding noise on the golf every time you went round a corner.

3 mechanics and $700 later and it’s fixed. How hard is it to find a destroyed gearbox mount?

Wow, that's an expensive mount !

That was gearbox and engine mount. Leaving the gearbox mount broken for months because the original mechanics were replacing wheel bearings and cv’s caused the engine mount to go as well. Had a water pump the week before for the best part of $1200 [emoji24][emoji24][emoji24]

Oh, and the OPC got a FMIC, tune and lots of new stickers [emoji28]

Actually, you'd be surprised. I was busting front engine mounts like nobody's business in the Corsa and even bent a Vibra Technics RHS mount. It turned out all because of the rear engine mount. Mind you, it cost me nearly $500 for a custom rear mount, but it's been worth it so far.

This was in 4 bits and you could push the engine around [emoji23] I hope this fixes it for a while. It’s standard in every way - I think driving it over a centre reservation did it [emoji87]

Interesting. I think my car is on that list from what was published in the media when it was revealed Holden were victims too. What's the most efficient procedure here if you're a second hand owner with no dealer contact and no chance of one contacting you directly since no dealers have any sales record of the current owner?

Probably call your local Holden/HSV dealer and ask them to check your VIN for existing recalls

Yeah agree. You can also call Holden Customer Care on 1800 46465336 with your detail as they are the ones sending you the letter. Alternatively go to the holden website www.holden.com.au/forms/change-of-address-or-ownership to register yourself as a new owner but I'd call them first.

Thanks for that. I called them. Got straight through. They updated my details in their system but asked me to do the online form as well. They also confirmed that my car (MY06.5 Astra Sri Turbo) is on the recall. They will contact when the parts are available to do the recall. No timeframe given.

Sad isn't it, really sad and the Americans couldn't care less ! With regards to the airbags, they WILL fix it, they couldn't pull their hands off it even if they wanted to. It's a compulsory recall no way around it.

Look at the bright side, put a decent clutch in, it'll probably last longer and feel much better than the OE clutch. If it were in the budget, I'd whack a LSD in it whilst the box was out too.

- Engine deciding not to start whilst getting pink slip done.
- Which resulted in: New plugs, injector clean, etc etc, then eventually pink slip done.
- Petrol pump replaced..... Which looks like it may have resolved my hot-start issues (fluffy toy to whoever guessed that when problem first started).

The wiring didn't require soldering. The ends just slip over the top and you squash/crimp them in place.

The plastic surround pops out in a second.

The old cancer lighter was a touch tricky to extract in that it needed a bit of oomph.

The only fiddly bit was the hole left over wasn't designed to meet a screw-in barrel style object. So it needed less than 1MM filed off.

In my experience the type you linked to are a complete nightmare. They never remain actively powered because the spring / pressure-based connectors inevitably wear, pop out during travel, are easily lost when you take them out and generally don't give you as many amps as they claim to.

I wanted a solid option that was inexpensive and I knew would be a solid, permanent fit. I also got Qualcomm QuickCharge 2.0 compatibility for the grand total of just $15 at Jaycar.

I have no purpose for Bluetooth at this point as my default Blaupunkt head unit doesn't have Bluetooth. I have plans for integrating hands-free though.

I'm glad you have a solution that works for you. Mine was cheaper; I didn't have to wait for shipping; read Russian or the other comment language. Yours does offer a max of 3.4A for one port though, which is much more than many similar generic units. There's no great need to criticise my different choices. Each to their own.

I didn't find it complicated.
Compared to taking the Xioami device out of the packet and plugging it into the existing socket, what you did is massively more complicated for a lot less functionality. As an added bonus, with the Xiaomi, if you need the cigarette lighter socket back for powering a satnav instead for example, you just pull it out and plug the other device in.

The Xiaomi is $20. $20 for bluetooth audio and two USB charger sockets which is completely portable and doesn't require you to modify your car at all. The colour of the operation light is customisable too via the iPhone/Android control app to match whatever your car's dashboard illumination colour is. Would you like to tell us how much your socket was?

Each to their own.

I didn't alter my car's wiring at all. The fascia that I filed back slightly can easily be replaced if needs be.

AFAIK this section is titled "what did you do to your car". Not "what accessory did you plug in temporarily".

If you don't like my choices, don't do what I did.

Some people like modding their cars to improve them. Some like to add accessories. Some like to do both.

The unit was priced at $25 on the shelf at Jaycar and I was marginal if I wanted to pay that but luckily when they scanned it, strangely it was $15. I wasn't arguing with that [emoji3]

The Xiaomi device seems pretty good value excluding postage.

No need to coat them. According to Wossner, the piston skirts have a special moly coating on them and the crowns are mirror polished to allow better heat spreading. Also, they're designed to specifically run a tighter piston to bore clearance in order to eliminate cold start piston slapping that apparently happens with some other forged pistons.

About ready to blow this car up... been largely faultless for a decade now everything at once, had the wife telling me off down the phone earlier because she was doing xmas shopping and the boot wouldn't open. Brings the car to me and the central locking is working but for some reason the open button on the tailgate has stopped working so i guess i'll be pulling that apart this weekend... once i crawl in through the rear seats, and the subwoofer, to get it open to begin with. Aaaaaaaaaaaaand aircon not working again.

---------------

EDIT: Weird... after reading on here about the key position on the boot lock i went and checked and sure enough it was in the vertical position, turned back to horizontal and boot works fine again. What i have NFI about is how it got turned, i've never used the key for the boot in my life and can't imagine why the air con numpty or the auto elecs would have been near it.
