Just shy of 50,000 in the van just under 12 months. According to the dealership, of all the Transit Customs they've sold, I've clocked the highest kms so far.

You've had it for a while, so it's not too bad.

I tend to average 15,000km per year. It was 20,000km p.a. before we had kids.

I believe 15k p.a. is about average in Australia.

Mine just ticked over 200k on the odo.

Under 100 on the engine though after the new one went in.

Mum's Forester is almost coming up on 300k though, that thing's been such a freaking workhorse. Money well, well spent there.

Saw pics of a friend's Opel Corsa that got t-boned last night by someone running a red light at 60km/h... took the hit right on the passenger door, side airbags deployed and considering the impact it did very well. Both occupants bruised and sore and passenger has some whiplash but otherwise ok so the car did it's job well!

Haha, I work 60 hours a week on average and somehow I've found the time to drop a Z20LET in the Corsa amongst other things.

Just a shot in the dark over the oil light, I wonder whether the oil cap o-ring isn't sealing properly or maybe you have a split oil breather hose somewhere.

you could be right there, I know my oil filter canister thing is sitting far more rotated to the right now as dead center it was still too loose, next oil change i might look at going to a proper filter instead of these paper insert POS things the z18xe in my car came with.

Anyone done the conversion before?

Also still have the oil sound around the cams making it sound like a diesel, but im not dropping any oil from what i can tell. Been a month since the oil change and the oil level is still perfect.

Lastly a nasty rattle is still present under load, it sounds like a pully is rattling somewhere but dissipates after about 4k rpm.

From my research very few work. It's an Apple thing.

You have to jailbreak it and setup extra software. This was a few years ago now. But can't imagine Apple have changed their protocols much

iPhones are hopeless in the fact their bluetooth is clamped down to mostly audio devices. The only way I know how to get an OBDII scanner to work on it is to get an ELM327 that is WiFi based as opposed to bluetooth.

Well, seeing as I'm waiting for my new brake bleeder kit to turn up to bleed the clutch, I thought I'd test something that might be of interest to fellow Corsa SRi owners. And that is how to fit a switch that will just switch the traction control on and off without affecting the function of the ABS system. Turns out it's pretty easy and it's the exact same method as in the Astra G with ABS too.

Already off to a shakey start, drop the car off to be told they weren't able to source my chosen tyres yesterday (Conti Premiumconact 2) and due to the odd size, alternatives are quite limited so we've agreed on the more expensive Pirelli PZero Nero GT which is a sportier tyre than the Conti anyway and the guy agreed to do them for the same price as the Conti's to make up for not having them ready for me. See how we go.

I have the pzero Nero's on my car, they were fine with stock power, quite grippy cornering and in the rain unless you really put the boot in. Once the boost went up and other mods happened they tended to get a lot of wheel spin till the car gets to 100km/h

Any news?

Nothing yet, not expected to get the car back this week though. expecting a call today to tell me to come pick up the gearbox so i can take it to the gearbox factory for diff install and gearbox inspection, think i may need a new sychro for 4th as it sometimes grinds downshifting from 5th.

It also has a oil leak that seems to be quite bad, only had a quick look at it and seems to be from the turbo oil line fitting on the block so may need to replace that.

Nero or the new Nero GT? Don't think the power will be a problem in the Barina either way though :D They were excellent in the rain on the way home tonight though.

Don't have the car with me to look but based on the tread pattern from google they look like the GT. based on tyres i have had in the past on other cars i would say they are close to the grippiest tyres i have had excluding semi slicks.

I am hoping for my next set to go to Nitto NT05 but i need to jump from 215/35/18 to 225/40/18 and it requires removing all the splash guards so as not to rub on the front.

Makes me think boosting the 1.8 is a waste of time

Anything you have driven before that you can compare it to?

I wouldn't say a boosted 1.8 is a waste, they can still churn out some respectable numbers. Just remember, this Z20LET is still mostly stock for the moment.

Only car I could really compare it to is my old BA XR6T. And I reckon the Corsa is still more fun. Not just because I built it myself, but it is just as quick. May have just over half the power of the XR6T, but its also only got half the weight.

And just because it didn't feel insane enough as it is, I've got a Galletto 1260 and some EDS maps for when I think more power is necessary.

Im not in it to be a dyno queen. Numbers dont mean anything when it comes to drivability. Im just hoping the revving capability of a 1.8, high comp engine and 7 pounds of boost will be enough to make it a fun car without opening the motor or rebuilding the gearbox.

I was outrun by a bog stock elantra the other day :( feels bad man.

True. I think that combo should be good for around 200-220bhp, which is something the Corsa C deserves.

I feel your pain when it comes to being beaten by cars like the Elantra, as I got beaten by an Ignis once. I reckon the TC had something to do with the poor launching at the time.

Still waiting to see if i can visit andrew to pull the tune off his ecu that was mapped by powerchip. I will then be able to compare to the stock map and have a better idea of where to go in the great ecu hack project which would help out greatly. He would get massive credit then too for helping out =) ecu and oil filter are my biggest limitations at the moment. Been doing some research and the light is most likely due to the canister being off alignment as theres a specific channel that supplies oil to the head. However i have also read that people who have converted to the screw on filter have had issues with oil pressure/delivery etc meaning going to a block to acomodate a turbo may not work. Could always mount the turbo lower which is what the dbilas kit does iirc, just have to be careful to make sure it will still feed back to the sump properly.

Still no idea on the rattle under load below 4krpm

Some sources say tensioner pully, some say oil pump on its way out, some say big end bearings (although i dont think its that) some say ac pully rattle.

I have ruled out timing tensioner as when i did the last service i checked the timing assembly as i changed it 5k beforehand.

Job tonight is realign the canister, degrese the engine bay putting plastic bags over all electronics and hitting it with the gerni, then check a few days later to see if there is any leakage. If its anywhere my money is on the canister seal.

Bit of an interesting night. Rotated the oil filter housing which eliminated the oil light (thank you internet)

Washed the car which was useless as it rained anyways. Defresed the engine as best as i could so i can see if there are any leaks. Managed to get a vidya of one of the noises the engine is making when its warm and sounding like a diesel.

https://vimeo.com/128488592

Im hoping its just that the oil may be a bit too thin and its the sound of cams etc. Going to try some lucas addative to thicken it up a bit.

SilentShout - Ouch, that really sucks man. Looks like the quarterpanel is kinked?

Today is the first time it has rained while I have been driving the Astra so I got to test out how good/bad the Nittos are in the wet. They seem fine for normal driving, but any amount of boost in second gear lights the tires up. So for those of you who are tuned, it would probably happen in 3rd and 4th too. Sammich I know you asked about them before, on your car they would probably be best reserved for track use only lol.

SilentShout

Yeah quarter is kinked, rear bar is f**ked and rubbing on the wheel. The metal support behind the bar which im hoping is just the support and not the chassis is also slightly bent, and the gearbox is out of alignment too. Putting it where first is supposed to be puts the car in reverse.

Bit of a spring clean for the real estate then im going to jack the car up and have a look at the linkage to make sure its okay, then realign if i have to -.-

I would be hoping to hell your mate is insured as the insurance company may just write the whole thing off with that kind of damage.

SilentShout
22nd May 2015, 12:33 PM
Neither of us are insured.

On a positive note bent the guard back out so it doesnt rub on the wheel anymore. Also realigned the gear linkage so now the shifting position is correct. Going to take it for a test spin to see if it holds up but there doesnt seem to be any damage to it.

On a sad note though, yesterday i degreased the engine to see if there were any leaks. Thismorning theres oil all over the sides of the front timing cover so im guessing camshaft seals =( the leak isnt bad though as it barely drops oil so im getting some lucas addative to thicken it up and see if that helps. If it does then ill use thicker oil next changes and just source another z18xe to build from the ground up.

Haha yeah. It ads character but makes it look trashy. Still un decided but its not a priority at the moment. What is a priority is the leak from the front of the engine which i assume is the camshaft seals as its coming from somewhere high up. Im half considering just buying another z18xe, rebuilding it with turbo goodies and dropping it in. Leaving the other engine in as long as possible until its ready. Then selling it cheap to anyone who wants it.

Went to U-Pull-It, grabbed another dash cluster for $33 plugged it in and wouldn't you know it? Temp and fuel gauges now work. So, I transplanted my cluster fascia and LEDs from the original in and all is good. Also, seeing as I had translucent blue needles with the needle lighting kit, I ended up swapping the white needles from the standard issue cluster in too. Looks alright I reckon, will have to get some pics up later too.

To sort out the fan, turns out I have two relays currently running to the fan. One is wired into the engine bay loom with a thermatic switch and the other is supposed to be cut from the fan plug and wired into the aux water pump, shouldn't be too hard to sort out.

Thinking cam seals are gone but this will be the second timr the front of the engine has been pulled apart. Im considering chucking some thick ass cheap oil in there like 20w 50 as its going to go through it, source another engine and rebuild it over a month and put it in. Then with the old engine i can measure up all the turbo goodies on the exhaust side then bolt them on when ready. That will give the new engine a few thousand kms to be run in.

Is it usual for the oil seals to be failing after 145xxx kms??

F17 is a lot stronger than you think. Plus, there's a few boosted Z18XEs in the UK that run the F17CR without issue. Only thing is, I'd chuck an LSD in there. Something I believe I'm beginning to regret with the Z20LET.

Those guys are running 260hp without changing the drivetrain bar a quaif lsd.

I spoke to a few people about it as it was my initial concern with boosting the car, According to a few sources the f17cr is made by Getrag (same people who do the supra boxes) and is good for 300hp. That being said the tech from dbilas did also inform me that when people start doing clutch dumps thats when you run into issues.

The plan with my car is to change the clutch to a new factory spec or slightly above factory spec clutch. That way if for what ever reason there is too much power, i will eat through a clutch rather than a near impossible to find expensive close ratio gearbox. Should be fine for a daily with a bit of booting it here and there.

First off i need to fix the damn seals though... implying they are the issue :(

F17CR is pretty much the same in the Astra G Z18XE, except the Astra G actually has a shorter final drive at 4.19:1 (Astra H Z18XE/R boxes are 3.94) versus the Corsa's 3.74:1 (close ratio boxes are fitted to all. Pretty much all the Opel gearboxes are made by Getrag, even the autos too. You could use an Astra box if you had to, but if you boost the Z18, it'd be interesting to see the effect of the shorter final drive on the performance.

Im hoping high comp, mild 7psi of boost plus the close ratio box will make a decent zippy corsa =D

Replaced valve cover gasket correctly this time. Attempted the ac clutch coil repair and gave up as its a pita to do with that damn torx hole being way too small. -.-

Cleaned up under the car so ill be able to hopefully see if there are any other leaks. The 1hr drive home hasnt shown anything but ive placed some boards under the car just in case. Only time will tell.

Bonnet squeeks now and is hard to close and open but thats because it wasnt seated properly when we put it back on. Should be a 10 min job to fix.

The damn noise is still there, i noticed there were clips missing from the timing cover lower down so it could be a rattle at idle rpm, still unsure though.

The sump plug seems to be stripped too. It only finger tightens 2-3 threads before needing a wrench. Inspected etc and made sure it was tight and sealed but next change it will need to be sorted out.

Went for a bit of a drive in the SRi to test the gears out. The short shift lever along with the M-Tech short shifter results in a ridiculously short shift, but with the anti-play kit fitted, it's given it a nice feel.

Went to do the brakes on the Corsa today and hit a snag, the rear passenger piston will not retract fully. I haven't even tried the other side yet, because I spent nearly 2 hours on the passenger side.

I am rotating it clockwise, and I thought that maybe I was turning it the wrong way so I turned it the other way for a half turn and it was moving further out. The handbrake was off and completely disconnected and I had the bleed nipple open.

I eventually took the brake line off and removed the caliper from the car completely, still no luck.

abbadonz I have the EDS IPF system from EDS motorsport from Germany (http://www.eds-motorsport.de/index.php?cat=c897_Astra-Astra.html&XTCsid=t61o3og5umccqj60m62f44v407). I also went through some extensive research, and there are plenty of options, but EDS being a long time opel tuner and having the IPF widely used by opel enthusiast sold it.

You basically download the tunes, and select the applicable one for your car/engine into the IPF and plug it into the car. The original is also saved so you can revert back. What specific Astra model and engine do you have?

And once I'm ready to fit one of his hybrid turbos and third party FMIC I should be good for 240bhp with only a nominal fee for an updated map.
