Raisin where did you get your strut brace from??

been chasing one for yonks but all i can find is a random red one on fleabay for roughly $400ish from memory, however ive never heard of the brand before and seems a bit exxy for an unknown brand part to me.

I snapped up one that Guy listed here that he decided not to use. It's a Whiteline strut brace, but I don't think they make one for the Corsa.

So I took the car for rego inspection today because rego expires tomorrow. They wouldn't pass it because the shocks are shot. It's not news to me and I was going to be ordering new suspension in a couple of weeks, but I guess I'll just order it now so I can push it through as soon as possible.

Could they tell because of oil stain on the outside? Might pass if you give them a clean up.

It's actually going to work out ok. I have a friend who works at a dealer who said he'll put it through for me. He knows what upgrades I have in the plans for the next 2 months anyway.

Got my spigot rings sorted today after work. Now the wheels should sit flat against the rotors like they're meant to. As I had to shim out the carriers, the machinist offered to make up some proper spacers free of charge, so I'll probably take him up on that offer at some point soon.

Saw something in his shed that I should've taken a picture of, it was an Isuzu G180 engine (as used in early Rodeos and Geminis) with a custom intake plenum that he fabricated. He said something like that would've cost around $700-800 and f*** me, did it look like absolute porn. Apparently he makes some stuff for Aussiespeed too.

Bypassed my rear BCS lastnight and broke my crankcase one-way valve in the process lol.

The car seems to run a little smoother now, has noticeably more boost in 1st and 2nd but seems a little laggier in higher gears/has different purge sound (louder and almost flutter but not).

I have taped off my broken one way valve now, would it be best to leave it disconnected permanently if I do it neatly? My understanding is it lets the crankcase breathe back into the intake and the one way valve is there to stop the crank case pressurizing. As I already have an oil breather on my crank case I figured it's already breathing and not breathing oily/hot air back into my throttle body now through this other smaller pipe?

I think you'd be choking the intake. The K&N Apollo filters are a 70mm intake and the MAF on a VXR is 80mm. Go for a crossover delete if you haven't done it already.

Sammich
15th January 2015, 10:45 PM
i looked at it but they are only 70mm i saw this as a restriction for a 80mm AFM. They are also only rated to 350HP for a turbo car. for the money a CDTI conversion would be better bang for buck.

Raisin
15th January 2015, 10:45 PM
This probably is a stupid question, but what is a crossover delete?

It's the black pipe that goes from the airbox/MAF over the rocker cover into the turbo. Doing a CDTi Airbox allows you to go directly from the airbox into the turbo with a short run of fully round pipe all the way instead.

This probably is a stupid question, but what is a crossover delete?

The removal of the pipe from the airbox over the rocker cover to the turbo and replacing with a direct route pipe from the turbo to the airbox. It shortens the length of the intake tract and improves response. Roose Motorsport are one company that does this kit and I think you also need the airbox from a CDTI Astra too with the intake snout on the front of the airbox. Here's a link to the full kit they do: http://roosemotorsport.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_3_111_113&products_id=310

And trust dutchy on this one, it adds more to the car's fapworthiness too.

This is my setup, i made all the pipework from the maf to the airbox and got an exhaust shop to weld on a nipple into the intake for the breather.
getting a cdti intake shortens the pipes and also doesnt sit ontop of the engine so less heat soak.

Brakes and wheels are back on, brackets made up for the top part of the radiator and the starter motor is out. Seeing as Auspost take a week to ship stuff from Melbourne to Adelaide now, I was waiting on a new starter motor for the Vectra (which has a C22SEL), but it's not here and my brother needs a car. So, I've taken the one out of the SRi and will replace it with the new one when it gets here. Bloody pain in the arse.

Next up, fit return fuel line and modify some more wiring. Once the starter gets here, I'll finish off the coolant hoses. Hell, there doesn't seem like there's too much more to do now.

Yeah if you had the experience in doing it. If I did a few of these swaps, I probably could too. Also, it helps when you don't have to wait to get stuff sent to you like we do here. Add to this, the fact I've done the majority of this swap on my own, I think I'm doing okay so far. It's not a hard swap to do, but it is still a bit more complex than a Corsa B Z18 swap.

Have you bypassed the rear bcs? You have a boost solenoid that restricts and controls the boost in certain gears but if its rooted, its not gonna work properly and might restrict boost too much or not at all, at random times

Its pretty straight forward to check a few of the boost lines on a z20, just follow where they go to and check they are in order.
Even when i picked up mine the main line that is about 4 feet long that goes from the front bcs to the rear wasnt connected and the car ran like crap. Replaced the whole line with 3mm line (or 4mm cant remember) and made it a good foot shorter and it ran sweet.

I bypassed mine last week, I dare say it feels down on power since. Well not down on power but lacking torque. I checked all the lines, I even re-did it with 4mm vac line and a brass t-piece instead of the plastic one, no change. The dump sounds different as well.

I really don't know if it's slower or if it's me getting used to the car now that I have had it for about a month or so lol. I really need to finish my boost gauge so that I can tell, but removing the rear BCS should have shown massive improvement in first and second at least, it feels better in those gears but third and fourth feel less torquey.

You can bypass the rear vac box completely. I have, and it runs much better. I have a line from inlet manifold to a T-piece, then one end to FPR, one end to recirculation valve and the boost gauge teed into that line.

I've done exactly that haha, my problem is heat soak though I think as it's cooler today and my power levels are fine. Time to rethink a cold air feed or bigger fmic.

This might be silly but if I buy an fmic kit will I need a retune? I don't intend on putting more boost through it, it's just to keep temps down.

You won't need a retune as such, but it wouldn't hurt either.

Another mod that's of supposed benefit in lowering intake temps is a phenolic manifold gasket kit. It's like a 6mm thick insulator and two gaskets to sit between the head and the manifold. The theory behind this is, that by insulating the manifold from the engine, the manifold doesn't soak up as much heat from the engine itself, hence keeping the air cooler and denser as it enters the cylinders.

I've put one of these in the Corsa, but with any luck, I might have it on the road in the next few weeks and will feel what it's like.

I ran a 2.2 airbox and hated it, no induction noise. From what I have read the cdti airbox has even less induction noise.

Of course that is assuming you can even find a cdti airbox at a reasonable price, by the time you end up modifying it to suit and the crossover delete kit you could have a pod and a custom heat shield made...

Cheers I am too addicted to the induction and purge sound lol and you're correct 35+ days is when it's noticeable and sadly we have had a few of those. I'll sort a solid cold air feed to my pod, section off that part of the bay and get an fmic kit I think. Good to hear you guys can confirm what I describe as heat soak though.

All I know is today, being like 5 or 10 degree's cooler the car had no issue spinning in first, chirping second and pulling well. If I rewind back to like Saturday or Sunday when it was uber humid and hot it was nothing like that. Third and fourth felt flat and no torque across the board.

So long as you take your time and have something to lock the cams it's not actually that hard of a job. It was the first thing I did with my first car when I was 15 along with help from my father, but we didn't even lock the cams!

But yeah, follow the procedure, torque everything properly and don't rush it you should be fine. If you are more of a visual aid person here's a couple of videos showing the process in time lapse.

Thanks guys but I am only more of an electronics guy (computer technician by trade) and only have basic automotive tools, I will look at Autovaux for parts though if that can save me some money then why not!

The change of belt, tensioners and water pump will be getting done at either EFI Performance or Allcar Performance Center (aka Walkinshaw Performance) here on the Gold Coast, two good local workshops.

Can I confirm these part numbers are correct from Autovaux please?

Water Pump & Seal - Genuine - GM24409355
Complete Timing Belt Kit - Genuine - GM93185844

Also, can I get an accessory belt from them? I can't find it on their site.

Check your build plate, that timing kit is for 2004 onward models. It is a different kit if it is a 2003

Also I went with the valeo water pump as it was metal instead of plastic. Seemed to make sense as that was what a few tunning places were selling instead of standard gm pump

Oh yeah definitely. I have done a lot of things myself on all of my cars, I have always been scared of doing anything inside the motor or close to, ie timing related. If it wasn't my daily I would totally give it my best.

If I start on a Friday night and dont get it back together by Monday morning I am stuffed haha.

Thanks. Corsa Cs usually have 260mm brakes on the front. Here, I've got the 308mm brakes from the Astra G Turbo and painted the calipers up myself (kinda need this big a brake on the front to haul up a Z20LET). The rotors are custom ones from M-Tech. Not cheap, but DPTI won't pass the car if I have 5x110 rotors redrilled to a 4x100 PCD.

Duplicolor Blue brake caliper paint. You can get it from any Super Cheap Auto store. Pretty much the perfect colour to match the carriers which are from a Meriva VXR (which are painted blue from factory). The decals I bought on eBay, specifically for high temperature applications.

Trust me, if it's anything like the ones for the F17 and F23 boxes, you'll be extremely happy with it. It was kind of a no-brainer for me to put one on the Z20LET's F23 box (in my case it does help when you can get to it with half the car in pieces).

Yeah, I wasn't sold on the idea of one until I got the F17 one in the Corsa.

From the install instructions, the M32 short shifter is far easier to install than the F23 one too which is nice!

I drove to Winton for a track day on standard shocks and DAPR springs just to see how they were. Bit harsh on bumps and bad roads but smooth road was ok. Really harsh on the track

As soon as I returned I removed them again put the B8s in and my god was it better

As far as red wheel bolts just brush touch them

That is the plan, only just got the thing running properly after all the upgrades, still got the following to go on.

3" S/S TBE
Aeromotive 340 Stealth fuel pump
Lightened flywheel
Courtenay Fast road clutch
Quaife LSD
Opel Rear Badge

Haven't revved it over about 3500 rpm yet only put about 20km's on it today as it had to pass a roadworthy.

Thinking i will take it to Castle Hill Exhaust to go on dyno there. as it is not far from uni.

If you have spring compressors you should be able to fit them yourself, but you probably still need to get an alignment done to check things out.

Are you gonna do any track days with it?

Fronts is just 2 bolts holding strut in and a droplink nut. Clip in engine bay. Shocks are out.
Swap springs over.

Rears just need to drop beam then swap springs out

Nope its good to go great height for everywhere

I would suggest doing shocks and springs in one go, I took mine out 2 weeks later as it was harsh.

If your gonna do the springs for now I advise taking front shocks once removed to a shop to change springs over unless you have a compressor to compress the decent spring clamps.

There under a lot of tension once compressed.

thanks for your help mate! Much appreciated. I'll do just the springs for now and see how I go..If it's pretty bad I'll do the shocks.

mylifeasbenjamin if you do the shocks too make sure they put the nuts from the original shocks back on as most aftermarket suspension comes with a full ssize m12 nut and the top hat wont sit right in the bonnet. this is how mins is atm and i have been having a heap of trouble trying to source a slim m12 nut to replace it as holden have the wrong part number for that nut.

Haha nice, what prompted me to buy this was there is a guy in my work estate who has a stripped and caged EG hatch, I got stuck at the lights next to him on the main road out the front in Ashmore the other day and dusted him it almost wasn't even worth the risk of racing him if I got caught. I shouldn't be doing that shit until I get my new timing belt kit done anyway, still waiting on UPS to deliver it from Autovaux.

Finally got my boost gauge finished, well somewhat until I get a different cup which has the 3M double sided tape foot mount.

I can't for the life of me get the LED memory to work, it always defaults to green -_-
I have checked the wiring and tried it different ways as well - might just be a dodge gauge but I can't be bothered returning it.

As for stats, I seem to idle at around -20 vac and under full throttle it will boost to 12psi gradually dropping to around 7psi steady - is this normal?

Thanks bud yeah I read that elsewhere it was more the 12psi and dropping to 7psi that I was interested in.

There is a LED memory wire for the gauge which I might disconnect from its current location on the back of the cig lighter and run it off of the memory wire on the headunit (presuming this always has a small current). The problem is when I shut the car or lights off my gauge defaults back to green and obviously when I shut the lights/car off the cig lighter doesn't have permanent power, must be the problem...

Idle was erratic, engine management light was on and boost was limited to 6-7 psi max. Was also running a tad rich - dropping to 10 or below on the AFR gauge.
Changed it with a good one and now it idles perfect, no light, full boost from the get go and running at 14.7 idle and 10.8-11.5 AFR on full boost.

I got my car back from EFI Performance today and it's running great, they were really positive about it as well because they're not overly common.

We have made some plans too which will cost some $$ but it's locked in now so no looking back haha.
- Bigger injectors (likely 440cc) and intank pump, something Bosch of course but EFI are looking into that.
- Front mount intercooler kit and 3" turbo back.
- VXR turbo upgrade.
- Custom tune done by EFI, they have confirmed their tuning software is able to tune my ECU win!

They were really optimistic, I said I was chasing 170kw atw but with the above mods they have said that they expect 180-200kw with their custom tune but we shall see. I hope to have this done in the next three months sometime, all in one hit which means I will loose the car for about a week.

Any idea how much EFI Performance are going to charge to remap the car, if it is over $1000 you may be better off getting a EDS IPF unit if that is all you are chasing power wise.

As far as the injectors go get VXR injectors and rail, they are ~$200 but are 470cc injectors.
For the in tank pump, there are a few members here using a Aeromotive 340 Stealth pump i got mine for $200 from Rocket Industries.
For the Front mount you are best off getting a courtenay sport intercooler but they are expensive >$1000 or a custom made kit. i have a TX autosports one and have replaced half the silicon hoses on it as they are poor quality and tend to split at higher boost levels.
The VXR Turbo will be at its limit around 170KW ATW unless you get a hybrid K04/K06 but they are quite expensive and may require the bottom end on the Z20LET to be strengthened as the rods and pistons are recommended to be upgraded if running over 310HP.
The other thing you will need to upgrade is the AFM, you will want to get a VXR 80mm unit, they are about $180 from Autovaux or $440 from holden.

They are quite optimistic there. I had near 170kw atw with custom tune and all the parts you describe plus more. Clutch was the first to go at those level. Have a look at an eds ipf mate, will upgrade your tune for less while you upgrade your parts. Otherwise you'll need to retune separately against big costs each time you have an upgrade.

Thanks guys.

I am doing the whole lot as a package with EFI in the one go. I have noted the info about the fuel pump and injectors.

The interooler will be coming from Courtney of course and the three 3" turbo back + dump are being made up by Ashmore Exhaust (Muffs to The Max).

The tune is only costing around $700 I believe and that is with as many dyno runs as it needs. They're really a great bunch of guys I am looking at around $4000 all up give or take for exhaust, FMIC, injectors, fuel pump, turbo and tune. I need to factor in the 80mm AFM though, I forgot about that.

Being realistic I am happy to stick with my goal of 170kw atw on an un-opened motor.

I would also factor in for a uprated clutch and lightened flywheel from Courtenay And a LSD to actually be able to put the power to the ground.

Clutch has already been done I killed the stock one and have an exedy now apprently rated to 400hp.
I am more worried about first and second gear in the gearbox lol but we shall see.

I'm sure as I go through this process more things will come up, whenever you say you want to spend $3000-4000 or something like that you can always nearly double it, but then I'm done lol don't want to burn too much money on it.

Ha ha ha, I know that feeling, I think I spent about $6k on parts when doing my engine upgrade, I still need to put the clutch flywheel and LSD in and get it dynoed but that has to wait a bit as I have done the ligaments in my knee so can't even drive it now....

Whitey at Efi does the tuning on a friends Supra, 800hp animal of a thing! Seem to know their stuff but be prepared for late nights! Seem to do Chris's tuning at midnight!
