    Is it worth it?

I've just been told I need a new automatic transmission but it will cost me $4,000 for a reconditioned one. The car isn't worth that and I don't have $8-9k for a new car. One thing someone said is that since I got the cylinder head got replaced that I would basically have a whole new engine so should last many years. Is it really worth spending $4k to get it fixed?

You don't need a new one, a good second hand one should cost you less than $500-600 plus labour to fit.

If your mechanic is trying to slug you $4k, they either don't want the job, or they plan on taking you for a ride. I'd find someone else to work on your car.

Well, all these things break over time, that's what they're designed to do. Get a low km unit and make sure you do regular trans fluid changes and it'll probably out last the rest of the car.

I can't believe it would be that much considering an entire engine and fitment for my Astra was under $2k... Different jobs I know but I wouldn't think a gearbox would cost more than an engine to supply let alone install.

    Cheers

You could do a fullrebuild and shift kit etc etc on about any auto car for half of that. Your mech is a crook. Do like Chris said and find a lowish km s/h one or bite the bullet and get a manual licence and buy a SRi.

Thanks for your opinions guys I think I've worked out what I'm going to do, I can get a recon one for $2,800 inc fitted but I will wait till it gets worse and if I have a full time job by then I'm going to get a loan and get a Mazda 3 but if I don't I'll just fix mine
