Thats still a decent amount of $$$. Why not sell your current xc for say 2k, buy a decent sri for 5k. You have a much better car for the same money as you would have spent on the trans

Still, for what it's worth, a good second unit would be a lot less. I'd only buy a new transmission if I planned on keeping the car for a very long time, like 10 years or more. Thing is, most automatic small cars like the XC Barina are usually very low km and it's not hard to find a second hand box on the cheap. I just don't see the point in blowing that much money on a gearbox if you don't need to, particularly if you're not planning to keep the car long term.
As I said, if you get a low mileage box, do regular transmission servicing along with your regular servicing and it'll last years. Plus, most wreckers will usually give you some sort of warranty with a gearbox.

Plus the Mazda 3 will be way more expensive than a SRi
There were a couple of SRi's recently that were sold for around the $2k mark here in Adelaide I know of. One was in fairly good nick too. Just beware with the Z18XE, the ECU is the weakest point and if it's been replaced at some point (in which case most have), the car will be a lot more reliable than some people would have you believe.
And the Mazda 3 is, well a Mazda 3. Unless it's a MPS or SP23/25, it'll be as boring as bat turds.

Faster
Auto
Pick one unless its a 7 speed DSG unit from VW its one or the other.
ran some calculations on how the AMR500 supercharger would fair up on the Z14XE
Supercharger: AMR500 (Small i know but hear me out)
Dimensions: 170mm Long x 180mm wide x 130mm tall
Displacement: 500cc per revolution.
Safe working limit: 16000rpm
1.4L x 6500( Assumed redline) = 9100/2 = 4550 liters per min
5(psi)+14.7(psi at atmo) = 19.7/14.7 = a boost ratio of 1.340 br
Air requirement at Boost
4550(lpm)x1.340(br) = 6097 Liters per min at 5psi at 6500rpm
Charger rpm required
6097/0.5(charger displacement) = 12194rpm (safe working limit for the AMR500 is 16000rpm)
Pully ratio required
12194/6500(redline) = 1.876:1
Unsure of the Drive belt pully size on the Z14XE But can always work that out later
HP increase figures are as such:
1.4x8hp = 11.2hp (rough power increase per 1psi of boost)
11.2hp x 5psi = 56 hp
90hp (factory) + 56 = 146hp at the flywheel (not accounting for HP loss to drive the supercharger)
146x0.745= 108kw at the flywheel (not accounting for kw loss to drive the supercharger)
torque would equal 161nm at the flywheel @6500rpm, Substantially more lower down in the rev range(not accounting for HP loss to drive the supercharger)
= 42kw/51nm gain at 5psi
Pop in some z18xe injectors which will hopefully fit, Tune the ECU, Pop an exhaust on and have some fun
Unsure what the strength of the auto box is though. that would be the real question if it could keep up with the power.
