The Opel Astra OPC Extreme will become the quickest street-legal Astra in history and one of the world’s hottest hot-hatches when it debuts at the Geneva motor show in March.
And unlike its 12-year-old namesake – the one-off 2002 Astra OPC X-treme concept – Opel says the racecar-inspired Astra OPC Extreme will herald a low-volume production run, giving enthusiasts the chance to own and race the high-performance small car.
Claimed to be a direct derivative of the Astra OPC Cup racer from Europe’s Nurburgring Endurance Championship, Opel says the Extreme edition features “uncompromised racing technology” such as an integrated safety structure, racing seats and six-point seatbelts.
The Astra OPC Extreme will also be lighter than the regular 1550kg Astra OPC thanks to extensive use of carbonfibre inside and out. The lightweight material can be seen across the car’s front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and large tailgate-mounted wing.
Also visible in the computer-generated image are Hankook racing tyres, alloy wheels with motorsport-style central locking wheel nuts, and a diffuser with quad exhaust outlets.
The Opel Astra OPC Extreme is also expected to benefit from a performance hike over the 206kW and 400Nm of the standard model’s 2.0-litre turbo engine, though details of scarce at this stage.
The Opel Astra OPC was on sale in Australia for just six months last year before the German brand pulled out of the market, though the performance model is believed to be a good chance to return wearing a Holden badge.
The next-generation Astra is also set to replace the Cruze in Australia when it launches in 2015 or 2016.
Full details of the Opel Astra OPC Extreme will be revealed when it debuts in Geneva on March 4.
