    Coolant

My plastic coolant overflow tank / reservior broke yesterday.

Fortunately ordered on a few months ago so I changed it using a torch last night.

One spring clip snapped when putting it back together and went awol. It could be still in the engine bay somewhere.

Anyway, I topped it up last night with water no bothering with this coolant rubbish.. Click here to enlarge

Adding coolant may a good idea.... does anyone know if Supercheap sells any red coolant that suits the Astra? i.e. Nulon or Tectaloy?

Or do I have to go to Holden?

I know that used my Holden coolant to top up a Toyota as it contained the same ingredient.

have a look in the car manual and see if it specifies a holden/gm spec that the coolant must have. and then compare to what it says on the nulon bottle.
    most likely it does
eg the nulon one meets the following specs
    General Motors
    GM 1825M
    GM 6277M
    GM 1899M

    Great..

it's gotta be better than that Mount Franklin variety.

I may pick up a 5L bottle.. will use it for the next coolant flush.

i no longer use a "coolant" at all

i use redline water wetter and distilled water, thats it.

after a fair bit of research i decided ethylene glycol is actually unnecessary and bad for australian conditions.

    Shay,

Interesting theory, I understand why it may be unnecessary in most of Aust for the average car.. however, for a turbo car, I would say it's necessary, plus the fact in Melb we also go to the snow at times where water may freeze.

    But why 'bad'?
