Its all to do with how far away you are from the closest exchange, I have ADSL2+ and I download at 150kbps because I live in the deep jungle of Uppercomebacktowest..
Hey all,
Recently got Optus wireless at my place, and have been questioning the speed of the internet.
Went to a mates place just then who has the same wireless from Optus but his speed alot higher than mine...
As an example, we downloaded the same show at the same time, his took 10 minutes, mine took an hour.
The only noteable difference is that ive got the Optus supplied modem and hes got some Belkin unit, would that be the difference or is there something else i should look at??
He looked at the settings and said theyre the same as his, so the settings aren't an issue.
Or could it also be related to distance from the modem to the laptop??

there are a lot of variables to testing speed:
- how far is he from the exchange
- are u both on the same plan?
- are both phone lines in perfect working order?
i know its not the network card (pc to modem) because ive worked on both your computers and they can handle high speeds locally without any issues
that being said... could u do me a favour... tell me what plan u are on, and go to http://www.speedtest.net and post the result?
Sure, we dont have to worry about viking raids or scurvy anymore, but instead we make a daily routine of sitting in flimsy, fibreglass (or metal) boxes full of gasoline which are propelled in opposing directions on the freeway at velocities matching that of low flying aircraft.
This is a roundabout way of saying that cars are dangerous....
can you log into the modem steve and tell me your speeds
for example i get
Data Rate (kbps) Down - 4737 Up - 903
Also close down all your explorer windows except for one and jump on www.speedtest.net

download speed = 1.09mbps
upload speed = 0.23 mbps
thats sounds awfully crap to even someone like me =(

what modem did they supply you with?
first thing i did was ditch the supplied modem, they restrict the software on them
you can always flash them with generic firmware also to get rid of the shit
