OIL: Shell VS Castrol ? Which is better for TS turbos?

I'm getting my service done next week and I'm deciding which oil to chuck into my TS astra Turbo. Helix Ultra or Castrol Edge? Both sound pretty damn good, but Castrol seems alot cheaper. I also tried Castrol in my engine on my last service and it seemed alright. Has anyone tried the Helix ultra (Which is meant to be recommended for Ferrari's ) in their astra before?

If you change your own oil and don't take your car on the track. Don't spend big $$$ on it.

change the oil more often and use a cheaper oil. For instance I run a mineral oil ( i use ERG brand 15/40 which is what Volvo use in their turbo models. ) and change it every 5000km and it comes out just as clean as it goes in. I purchase in bulk which ends up being $3 per litre but in 5L containers IIRC its only around $25.

I stick away from castrol gtx's as i have found it to get quite thick very quickly. I can not comment on the Shell as I don't use it.

Shell Helix Ultra is good, as is Castrol Edge.

however there are a few different grades of Castrol Edge Sport. I use the Castrol Edge Sport 5w30 in my GTI and dad's BMW ($30 for 5L on sale).

Changed every 7,500km for the GTI and ~10-12,000km in the BMW.

I use Mobil X2000 10w40 or Valvoline Engine Amour 15w40 or 10w40 for my Astra turbo, again changed 7,500km. both of these are mineral based synthetic oils.

As Guy said, changing good oils more often is better than using the best synthetic oil but changing less freq.

will end up costing the same - 2 x ($25 for Valvoline Engine Amour, $10 for the oil filter) or 1 x ($60 oil + $10 filter).

Regardless of what oil you buy, make sure to use either the recommended 10W40 or 15w40 for the Astra.

I bought about 4 bottles of Valvoline Engine Amour 10w40 on sale the other day, $25 for 5L.

For any type of 'street' vehicle:

If you change your oil regularly or at the manufacturers specified intervals and use the manufacturers specified oil type/grade or better specification over OEM specification, then it dosn't really matter which one !

Go with whichever fits your budget...
