it actually goes in near the motor, not near the gear shifter

"Regarding shortening gear throw, ive looked into this and there as no need to relace the mechanism on top of the box. Not for that price anyway.
Repositioning the ball pips (on the mechanism arms) can shorten it to how much you want "
