welcome to the site mate lookin fwd to seein u on the next cruise
Hey All
I know you've all heard this 100 times but it's great to be hear. Trust me, I will be asking lots of questions as this is my first venture to a 1.9 (a diesel one at that!). My past cars have all been good old Australian Holdens, primarily commodores, currently an SV6. Recently took a Holden Astra CDTI for a test drive and was very impressed. So impressed that I bought one which I will pick up in the next week or so. What words of advise do you have for someone who has never driven a turbo diesel before? Looking forward to the next VIC cruise. Omegaman

Sure, we dont have to worry about viking raids or scurvy anymore, but instead we make a daily routine of sitting in flimsy, fibreglass (or metal) boxes full of gasoline which are propelled in opposing directions on the freeway at velocities matching that of low flying aircraft.
This is a roundabout way of saying that cars are dangerous....
welcome
Welcome, only advice would be to greenbox it when you get bored. Will cover the cars behind you in black soot, but gives a very large performance gain. (up to 140kW or so)
Welcome mate, will be good to have another oiler on the cruises

Just read this bit again, so now i'll actually be able to answer your question lol. Didn't realise it was going to be so new, you and Pete (ICE) will both have brand new oilers if you come on the mini-cruise next friday! Actually it'd be a really good run in period for it, as for the first 3,000-5,000km you don't want to maintain any constant rpm for extended periods of time (glasses the bore or something?).
As for tips for driving the turbo diesel, initially, keep changing revs, don't just sit on cruise control on the freeway or anything, every couple of minutes, drop back a little bit in speed and drop a few gears then get back up to speed again. No redlining, but you can go up to like 3,500-4000rpm (unboxed it's not worth going higher anyway).
If you're not going to box it, torque is your friend, so i'd change at about 4,200rpm to keep yourself in the torque band. For day to day smoothest driving, change in first at about 3,000rpm, and no higher than 2,500rpm for the other gears. If you're going to box it, and want quick accell, still do a bit of a short shift in first, then almost redline the other gears (depending on which box you pick).
Genuinely though, the cruise will do well for the motor, so you should come along (thread's in the vic section i think)
Pete, you better read this too so you don't ask me any questions about it
