Id buy a bigger case!
GTX 260 Core 216 - Retails around $250 $ 350 , Prolly get one for just shy of $200 cost.
Problem is it's about 11 inches long ( That's what she said ) lol.
But yeah serious muscle in that card for low dollars and would crush all above mentioned cards quite comfortably.
your 2.8ghz processor sort of limits you a bit ( unless you plan to overclock it ) The 9800gt would be a great card if you are limited for space and dont intend to overclock.
Edit : just read your reply . the 9800gtx is a nice card but it is the same physical size as the GTX 200 series of cards.
im concerned about room mate, like you said, if you struggled to get teh 8500GT in there
the 9800gt might be a stretch
the 9800gtx & gtx+ i would say no way.
BUT i havent seen your case or the actual cards, so cant tell you 100%

Overclocking is impossible thanks to HP I'm trying to keep the cost down as much as possible as I've already spent $330 on the other stuff I mentioned below
The 8500GT I purchased was HUGE though IMO lol. I'm hoping with advances in technology a new 9800GT should be smaller. I'm still using the m9070a HP media center as a base for all this
my 8800gt is heaps bigger than my 8500gt
and i mean heaps!

I think you should measure the room you got to play with now so you don't get any good ones in mind then have to have them chopped due to size.
Or you could bigger case aswell and not really have to worry about said problem..
ok then, I will turn this thing off and measure it
Gfx cards are not getting smaller , They're getting bigger
Almost all of the "Consumer" based gfx cards available today are over 10 inches in length ,
and require at least 2 x 6 pin pcie power connectors ,
This is also something you will have to consider , the power supply in your pc may not be enough to run a modern card.
Ok, my current card (8500GT) is 8" or 205mm long from the very front of the card to the end. Looks like if I move a couple of wires I could squeeze in a card around 10.5" or 265mm
