Should always follow the manufacturers recommendation in oil grade...

Most even for high performance cars are 10W-30 or 40 and some newer ones even use 0W-30 or 40 oils.

If you go to an oil with a greater range, it will be of benefit, but not mandatory Click here to enlarge

Extreme cases of say race engines are a different story, my old Chev 350 powered race car engine was run on 40W-70 Penrite oil as that was what was recommended by the performance shop that built it...but there's no way you'd run that grade in normal or even in a hi po street engine Click here to enlarge

    Shouldn't leak !

That's a sign of wear and tear of the seals, gaskets etc. need em serviced Gavin Click here to enlarge

I run my vert on 5W-50 synth oil - no leaks or even 'sweating' obviously because my Z20LET is very low kms.

yeah but the rocker seal on the older style Opel 4 pot is rubbish and if the cover gets warped even slightly it can be a real bitch to control. You need a good silicone cement to have a chance and with a less viscose oil the problem just gets worse.
