Do yourself a favour and learn from my painful VW experience. Don't make the same mistake I did. Put a reminder in your calendar now.

"Sell the VW before warranty expires"

A VW, any modern VW out of warranty is a liability you really don't want.

Tru dat, but not the case with mine in particular. I bought a MkIV Golf without doing due diligence in an expert VW owner's forum in advance to find out about all the MkIV Golf problems which are confined to the electrical system mainly. It was only after buying it though and wishing to fix a few minor problems myself did I fully realise just how well designed VW's are to not be worked on. The shockingly expensive parts availability that makes BMW parts look reasonably priced, the fact they only sell 'kits' of parts and not individual pieces makes this aspect even worse. Oh, sir has a cracked window regulator guide? Well, you'll need to buy an entire new door then. That'll be $5,000.

The build quality is also horrendous. Oh they look fabulous on the outside and even everything you touch has a nice feel to it. That's what sucked me in too. It's only when you need to start taking things apart to fix some minor annoyances do you realise it's all held together with the cheapest, most brittle plastic known to man and an almost obsessive dedication to minimising metal fastenings. Huge interior trim panels are held in place with at most 2 screws (if you're lucky - more common is one or even none at all) and a whole bunch of plastic clip rivets that are designed to snap if ever taken apart.

VW's are very cheap cars, trying to pass themselves off as quality ones. A job they actually do very well. I know I was fooled. I won't make the same mistake again though. I replaced mine with the Astra, which is also a cheap car, but it's not masquerading as a cheap car. It knows what it is and doesn't try to fool you into believing it's anything else. The Astra has been head & shoulders more reliable and vastly cheaper to source parts for than the VW I had.

i can appreciate the frustration your poor experience caused you and i'm not trying to diminish it, but, i have quite a few friends and a couple of relatives that own modern VW's, one who actually races one and his mates own and operate a VW specialist workshop. None of them have related poor experiences and the research i did on the R36 before buying showed it to be a good, reliable vehicle. I will reserve the right for you to say "i told you so" if it all goes pear shaped Click here to enlarge

To be fair, my car was never bought for racing or modification at all. I was just using it as a basic domestic transport conveyance with no sporting pretensions whatsoever. I do like whatever it comes with to work though and that was possibly my downfall. I don't think VW's are intended to be fixed. Certainly they're design is engineered to make fixing them as difficult and expensive as humanly possible. I can fully appreciate that owning a VW workshop would naturally make you a big fan of them. What's not to love about being able to charge customers with the cars huge $$$ for what should be simple fixes.

You might be alright with an R36. The real wallet killers are the tiny supercharged + turbocharged diesels with double-clutch autos. So many stories of John Hughes having to throw complete new engines + gearboxes at them under warranty. I wasn't so afflicted having only a very conventional 2 litre petrol, but even that burnt oil like nobody's business which I later found out was perfectly 'normal' and to be expected for that car.

yeah Mk4 Golfs burn oil. have heard that before. i've not owned a VW before, but like i said, nothing i have read about the R36 waved a red flag. I bought a Volvo S60R last year with an engine i am intimately familiar having had 2 previously in my XR5's, yet when i took that for it's first service it cost me $6k in repairs. You never know with a second hand car. as for the DSG warrranty stuff, that was the later 7 speed versions primarily in Golf and Polo models. I knew a guy who worked in VW customer care at the time that was all going on. interesting times for him.

anything Euro and Prestige is going to cost a bit more to maintain.

and no Dutchy, not a Jeep. all will be revealed when the bloody thing actually arrives. It is currently on a train between Perth and Adelaide.
