Methinks something is up with the truck driver offering to pay for all the repairs in cash. Especially considering he'd probably get raked over the coals by DPTI for having a dodgy truck.
Holy crap, that would have been quite something to see.

he's lucky it was only car damage. there was a guy killed here a while back when a tailshaft fell out of a truck, bounced over the concrete Jersey Barrier and went through his windscreen. both vehicles were going at 100km/h at the time so as you can imagine, it wasn't pretty. Yeah theyre having a massive crackdown on dodgy trucms here in SA. A friend of a friend had a very serious crash coming down towards the end of the freeway about 12 months ago. The truck had dodgy brakes resulting in him losing brakes on the last bit of the downtrack, he tried to stop the truck by turning it into the wall, it flipped onto its side, skidded and wiped out 3 or 4 cars at the intersection, killed 2 people and it was a tanker full of septic waste that leaked, he was pinned in the truck lying in the waste and as a result, lost both legs due to servere gangrene and infection. Not nice at all.

Drawing up parts for new shifter, will be up near the steering wheel if I can make it work with hydro handbrake next to it. All rose jointed to hopefully eliminate excess play

Imagine if you were on a motorbike! Aren't they supposed to have a loop or something that stops the tailshaft actually falling out?

My brother has since reported the incident to police. I believe the cost of repairs alone is going to be more than $3k, so it's compulsory anyway. My mum's car wasn't insured (well, it's a Viva, rego is worth more than the POS), but I believe the driver is at fault, as the object had come loose from his truck and he was walking back to pick it up apparently. I reckon someone is about to go the proverbial row of outhouses over this. As @adam_92 said, they've been hot on trucks and the companies that operate them since that SE Freeway smash and the safety inspectors leave no stone unturned when they're inspecting heavy vehicles nowadays either.

Worst thing is, this guy operates trucks that carry chickens from the farms out around the mid north areas back to a processing plant basically around the corner from our house. When I come home on a Sunday night from my mum's place, I often see and get caught behind several of these trucks. I didn't even know until today that my 11 year nephew was in the car too and I'm glad no one was hurt.

I've been feeling the same way for the past couple of weeks. It's not that I don't enjoy driving mine, I just want to try something else now. Also, as I do more and more to the Astra, it's becoming less and less enjoyable to go back to the Corsa. But I'll hang onto it for a while still at least because I don't have money burning in my pocket to buy anything else.
