Shay. Go check out Canon's web site.
They've got all the info on their cameras, lenses and accessories.

And check out their Better Photography site. It'll help you with deciding what sort of photography you want to get in to (you might favour wide angle stuff, sport photography, long exposure, macro...) and what equipment you might need to get the best results.

There is no lens or body that will allow you to do all of them well. It can be a pricey hobby if you want to explore it all.

Personally, I'd skip the whole 'get something basic and work it out, then buy something better'. If you know you want to do photography, get something good straight up. It'll save you $ in the end. If you don't have the budget, maybe wait a bit longer. I'd aim for a 450D (or nikon equivalient) and up. Don't forget, memory cards, lenses (or just filters), bag, tripod maybe, flashes... all $ man. When you find a deal... add a k for goodies Click here to enlarge

Also, since you're in Perth. Join Flickr and the PIP (Photographers In Perth) group. They do 'walks' quite often. Great bunch of guys to get tips off and hang out with to learn a few things.

good tripod and flash units will set you back another 1k, flash you can get away with not using for now but a tripod is a must for low light, macro and night shooting

Need a flash for macro too.
Don't want to risk a long exposure in case your subject moves.

Deep DOF on a macro shot (better) needs a small aperture, which needs more artificial light. A shallow DOF on a macro shot can be about 1 - 2 mm. Too shallow.

Get the 580-EXII flash (can buy more slaves later). Great flash!
And a tripod for 1 or 2 hundy.

Shay, there's no such this as 'this will be enough' in photograpy Click here to enlarge Start saving mate. You've started something you won't be able to stop.

I haven't read this entire thread, and it's probably already been mentioned. But invest in good glass. That will be the difference between good and great photos.

Photography is a hobby which is brutal on the wallet.
