and when they wear out, what can you afford to replace them with? Bridgestones, Goodyears? or some more awesome nankangs?

My car ran 17's almost since I bought it, recently went to 18's. Personal preference really.

Probably could've gone 40 series rubber to soak up the bumps a bit more though.

I have 225/35/18 with hankook ventus sport tyres and cant fault them. The rims do come to the outer edge making them look bigger than what they are.

If you can afford proper tyres then go 18's if not 17's can look just as good.

Yeah true, because that 1 inch makes a big difference in tyre price.

When I went wheel shopping there was only $5 difference in the price per rim going from 17's to 18's but there was a $150 difference per tyre, and when you only expect 15k max from the tyres then its a big difference.

If you drive hard or you are planning to, then I think 17's are the better choice, if not, get what ever you like.

18" tyres are generally more expensive, as you'll then need to go for a lower profile. Best if you went to a tyre place (Tyre Factory, Canterbury Tyres), and get a number of quotes, for rim and tyre packages using different tyres brands etc.

This will give you a much better understanding of what costs you'll be facing, and will help your solve your dilemna a lot easier.
