TRACTION CONTROL on my 2004 ts Astra CDX

Hey guys i have a 2004 ts Astra CDX and it comes with traction control.

I dont have a switch and i want to have the option to be able to switch it off. Ive gone onto ebay and found someone who is selling the switch and the wiring loom however i dont know how to install it. I have searched through the forums and on other sites as well and im getting alot of mixed answers as to whether its possible or not or the install guides are pretty vague. some poeple say its just a matter of connecting a simple wire, some people say i wouldnt do it because its tied into other things like the abs and its really left me at a point where i dont know what would be the right way. Im happy to get a professional to do it as i dont want to f**k up my car for the sake of saving a bit of money. Has anyone done it and can anyone give me some concrete advice ? any ideas and help would be much appreciated ;)

The guys on there will be only too willing to help you through it . . . . although I am equally sure there are guys on here that have done the mod and should be able to give you advice also.

this may sound stupid, but why do you want to turn it off? i have a 04 ts cdx too

rude one has done it I believe (he was telling me at the OA cruise)

i looked into it about a week ago, it involves quite a bit of fiddling with relays n so forth

I've also done it on my turbo Vert - NOT sure if it's ALL exactly the same process for the N/A variants...if you are able to find out about that part of it, I can supply you with info as to how I did mine...

FYI it is a very fiddly excercise and you need to be very careful with some of the wiring work involved, for me now I have it, I don't use it much if ever at all, so could've saved myself the bother...

Thanks for finding that Glider. It doesnt show the process for adding the switch on the dash though......... god damn european cars !

What I suggest you do is consult an auto electrician or sparky and see if they can/are willing to do it for you and you supply them with the switch and centre console insert...maybe even supply the info in the above link to help them out, they 'should know' how to sort out the rest...

You can get the part no's for the switch and console piece here or by phoneing/going to a GMH spare parts outlet...

Also if you do a search in the 'How To' section here on the forum, you should get a thread with all this info and item part no's. :)

Cheers Wraith.... i will do that this week sometime and thanks guys for your input as its made things clearer for me.

the traction control switch is very simple..and it can be done on the cdx, as long as it doesnt have esp.
all you have to do really is either, run a wire to the abs plug in the engine bay if you dont already have the plug under the ash tray

Just make sure the switch is hidden.

Traction control is there for a reason and if you prang it, and insurance notice the little switch there and twig.. they can wipe your insurance and the claim.

I can turn it off in my AH but to be honest its only useful if you are taking the car to the track.

hmmm your now giving me more to think about !

ok i think i might just leave it as it is.....maybe ill think differently tomorrow but thanks for all your input guys.

The switch is a good idea, ive got one my self...... I did it differently though.......

I find my self driveing with it off more times then not, Many people have argued the point with me thats its a safetly device etc... but i like knowing when my wheels are going to let go then if need be power out of it rather then haveing a computer cut the engine power and apply the brakes to the offending wheel.

Though if you get a bit heavy on the go pedal your tyres dont last to long, for a small car it can lite them up easly enuff.

This is the instructions i used, its pretty simple, dosent take long at all.

If you get the proper switch it look factory, so insurance never knows :)

i dont think traction control applies the brakes. thats more esp, than traction control.
all traction control does i believe is cut power to the engine.

The traction control used by Opel is, I believe, linked between the engine ECU and ABS system, thereby applying brakes and/or "manipulating" thottle control/engine revs to assist in preventing and/or controlling skidding and/or spinning wheels. I read somewhere that it is linked only to the front wheels (drive wheels), however don't quote me on this.

In the end it is there to assist in dangerous situations, and I'm sure an astute insurance assessor could very well determine that this is an "added" extra if the particular model didn't come with switchable controls. I know the earlier Astras had it switchable, but was dropped, I think, from about 2001 models on. The 2000 Olympic Edition CD had switchable.

As far as I kow (and I could be wrong here):

The TS's you could not turn traction control off in the later models.
All AH's you can turn it off, but I don't know if it can be turned off fully.

Just curious, if we can turn it off by holding down our sports button for four seconds or whatever it is...
Then why would installing something aftermarket to do the same thing void your insurance:confused:

IIRC (and I could be wrong here) when you turn off traction control in the AH's, ESP is still enabled.

Note that the 1.8L CD's (AH 7.5's) didnt have traction control or ESP at all.
