So I'm in the process of upgrading to an SSD as my main drive.
Who has done it? Any positive/negative experiences so far?
I'm looking at a 500gb Samsung EVO850, can pick em up for around the $225 mark posted.

SSD is life.
Seriously it's been the most noticeable change I've ever made in all my time building pcs/using laptops.
There's not much negative about them other than the capacity which is almost a non-issue these days. Everything is snappier. Everything. It makes older hardware feel a bit more alive too - I've put some in a few generation old laptops and with a fresh install of windows it's like a brand new laptop (for the basic uses they get used for I mean).
The Evos are a solid unit for a good price, but there's faster out there if your motherboard can support it (m.2 or msata slots), but otherwise the Evos are tip top.

Too expensive and too small if used as backup drive as this moment.
Just read up about failure rates. When I got mine a year ago Microsoft one seemed to be the best.
Only using as main drive and back up everything to other drives.

Mine are a mix, have a couple of single drives and a couple of raid setups for the important stuff.

Yeah in that case I rekon the Evo's fine.

Did i read about 10tb ones recently? Wouldn't mind swapping all of mine for 3 of those 😀

Largest atm is a 16TB from Samsung, around the $7k US mark!!
They showed them off in a server on launch, 48 in total hahahah. 768TB of storage!
The Samsung EVO drives are great. I've installed them in a ton of machines and they all seem to be running happily. Great bang for the buck too. The SSDs in my home PC are a bit older, I have an OCZ Vertex 2 60GB for Windows and an OCZ Vertex 4 240GB for programs. I'm just holding out until they give up the ghost so I can upgrade to a new single 500GB Samsung drive. The 60GB one is 6 years old now and still going!
Once you go SSD though, you can never go back.
Well that is just too expensive. For now a few hundred for a 3tb old fashioned backup sounds better than a few hundred more for a 500gb. Gheez @Raisin 240gig, you have no porn i assume?

I'm starting to struggle a bit with space with my GS60 for my main drive (has a 1tb secondary and a m.2 primary) so sometime over this year I'll probably replace it with a 500gb.
Only reason mine fills up so quick is steam library coupled with massive work files :(

So pulled the trigger on the evo850 500gb drive.
Turned up today

Really good SSD drives they are. Right up there with the Intel 730 series.
I can't see you having much trouble with that one :)
Came with all the cloning software too, which is nice. Guess I know what I'll be doing over the weekend.

I have a Sammy 840 EVO 256GB SSD in my desktop. Wicked little drive that one.
I don't know about you guys, but I did notice on the transition from Windows 7 to 10, the performance of this drive really picked up.
Running Windows 10, did a speed test on my 2tb. So will do a comparison for funnies.

So for funnies, here is a comparison speed test
wow, big difference.
Managed to get the random read/write speeds up much higher with some changes to settings.
They are sitting at 97307 and 84416 respectively now.
does that mean you can now watch 3 porn movies at the same time ?
If I hook up a 3rd screen, yes.
Becuase who wants to watch small windowed porn
What'd you switch around just out of interest?
But that's pretty awesome - SSDs are life, seriously.

3d vr porn.... hmmmm.
