Help Jerram (and maybe others) build a PC

Hi all,

I've been looking to build myself a PC, and this is a list of things I've come up with. What do you reckon? All stock is from everyone's favorite msy except where noted. Thanks.

ps as you can see I've got both 1156 and 1366 options.

What is the main purpose it will be used for??? Gaming or answering threads on OA???:D

yeah I'm just making sure I haven't got any "lemon" products in there as I've heard some interesting stories about msy and warranties.

so what do you wanna do with the new PC?

play high end games or are you happy with minesweeper?

editing video or watching youtube??

have you logged on to whirlpool?

dont take the "interesting stories" you've heard for gospel.. there's a "lemon" in every range of product..

yeah I'm a gamer, but I also work with high end audio editing. Yeah I know what you mean

they are the more expensive options, but they are better quality gear IMO, plus with 3tb of space, that should last u a while... i think :skep:

have you thought about speaking to Ash? (calibrated)

Why the 9800 GT instead of a GTX 260 or 275 ??

Go for the current gen - the cost is no much higher.

heh well I was thinking that he'll probably read this at some time.

also I went for the 9800 as an initial card (depends on how much money I have and whether I want it right now, or maybe in the new year)). Same with the 950 processor (mind you though at twice the price of the 920 I'm not sure that it represents the best value for me)

do you really need so much hard drive space ? if the answer is yes then hae you factored in a backup drive in case you lose it ? as 3 TB or even 1 TB is alot to lose.

also just get the lower spec i7 chips....i doubt youde notice the difference and then be able to justify that with cost. ide put that $300 extra to a better graphics card and youde still have some left over.

Word is the 920 (I have one) is the best overclocker of the lot. I have had mine from 2.66 up to 3.6 with stock cooling and no heat issues.

For a tiny reduction in cpu clock speed, spend the money on the Video card - it makes a bigger difference at this point.

they never have stock, they have less than zero customer service, and their after sales service is even worse.

1st off. what is your reason for wanting an i7 build? if its for future planning for 8 core cpu's, then go for it. if you just want a fast quad core, go AMD. will save you money for better components.

but, assuming you really want i7, this is the build I would do. just my opinion of course.

always get the BEST mobo you can afford. its the base that all your other options will work off.

Asus P6T Deluxe or Asus Rampage II
Intel Core i7 920
6gb GEIL/G.Skill/Corsair
Western Digital 500gb (x whatever quantity you want, maybe in a RAID setup).
G.Skill Falcon 64 or 128GB SSD (believe me, this makes a massive performance improvement).
Pioneer/LG Blu-Ray
sub $200 card, i would be going ATI 4870 or 5770 (sapphire would be my brand preference). or $250 will get you 4890's.

Case: never underestimate the value of a well designed case. i cannot recommend the Silverstone Raven RV02 highly enough for a sub $200 case.

PSU: i wouldnt touch OCZ or Corsair PSU's with a barge pole. very high failure rates. stick to the likes of Antec, Coolermaster, Seasonic, Thermaltake, etc.

that's a pretty serious PC. i'm going to go for a bang-for-buck setup soon as i'm a cheapskate.

AMD Athlon II x2 245 or 250
Asus M4A77T-D
4GB RAM
Radeon 4650, probably 512MB, maybe 1GB depending on price

that should come in around the $300-$350 mark

seriously, get 6gb ram... runs SO good !!

Assume ur gunna buy Win7 with it?

:o oh yeah thats right... 64 bit OS required!!

why are yout getting a 920 when it uses more power, runs hotter and is likely to be discontinued next year. get the 860...better value for money and better performance if not overclocked. You will also save money on RAM and VGA card. With that money saved, get a 4890 :)
