As the title says, I am thinking of 'upgrading' and i have the opportunity to pick up an Audi A3 1.8T for a very good price ($16,000)

redbook comparison --> http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/comparespecs.php?key2=HOLD03GS&key=AUDI02AJ

Has anyone ever owned an Audi before?

Any pros or cons anyone can enlighten me on?

Thanks for your help guys!

Id prefer the astra. a 1.8 litre turbo engine should be doing much better then that.

My 1.6 NA engine in my CRX can beat that Audi up to 100km/h.

It depends what your going for though, performance or luxury....

Sounds nice Bryan, what colour?

Audi - sounds like you're stepping up in the car chain.

I am not lucky enough to ever see Audi's where I am from :D But they look nice when I do catch a rare glimpse.

I thought you wanted the HSV Astra though?

Those Audi's are based off a MKIV Golf, basically, too heavy, too slow and the handling is rubbish, better interior though.

Thats an A4, lop the back off and you have an A3.

still think it's better than an SRi interior?

Yeah pretty much, my sister has a MKIV Golf and an my mother has a TS Astra CDX, the Astra comes off feeling a hell of a lot cheaper than the Golf. The seats are a fair bit more comfortable as well, The A3 interior is almost identical to the Golf's except for a couple of badges and lights.

cdx astra has different seats to btm's SRi astra.. the SRi has much nicer seats..

I hope so, because honestly, the seats in the CDX completely kill my back (the lumber support crap does not work).

oneightoo
28th July 2006, 12:24 PM
yeah they were a big improvement.. i owned both an SRi and a city model, the city model gave me a sore back, where as the SRi didnt, better support, they have a mild bucket seat appearance..

Uncle of mine used to work for a car electric motor manufacturer for car manufacturer. He knows that Audi uses the best possible parts for their cars (even better than Merc and BM). So, if I'm you, and look is not a huge thing, I would no doubt go for an Audi A3 because of the brand name, luxury and quality of their car.

Another thing to consider is that do you think an Audi would suit you? They tend to be more suitable for older people though :P

Are we talking about a new Astra compare to a new Audi or older models??

I must say, I too would prefer to upgrade to an Sri T, but for 16k, if that's your budget, I suppose the Audi is attractive.

You'd have to wait a couple more years at least I think to get an Sri T at that price...

JohnBu

just watch out for parts pricing.. the audi's make the opels look like commodore parts pricing..

i know the older audi's have a few electrical gremlins = not cheap to fix..

but having said that, there's heaps of modding potential, and a decent money on mods will easily blow the sriT away,

give it 2 years and you'll see some higher km SRiTs for $16k, thats what i am to get in 2-3 years for my turbo.

HAve fun a Euro style Camry... Not a fan dude. The astra looks better.

talking about which car is better you will always get biased opinion depends on where you ask your question.

Go to an Audi forum, people probably tell you the astra SRI T is rubbish.

the A3 is a nice car, i looked at a coupl before i bought my srit.

nowhere near as quick an the only reason i wouldnt say it can compare is that for that price it must be alot older...hence why it shouldnt be compared to a 2003 srit.

but there are heaps more mods avalable for it, a few grand would see it beat an srit easy...

What's the fuel consumption like on the A3's?

i'd have one over an sri like you have at the moment... they are easily tunable aswell .. price sounds cheap and even if you dont like it you can always flog it off for at least what you bought it for?

go the audi if its a 02 model that price is great.

you wont regret it at all it ownt take much to be beating the SRiT's anyway.

there is alot more aftermarket stuff for them as the engine is in a few cars.

i would prefer the mkiv golf though but the A3 is still a nice car.

do you think the owner would consider a trade and some cash for my pulsar?

after checking out what the private sales for 2002 1.8L T A3's are going for... i'm tempted to buy it, have two cars for a while and decide which one i like better.

Private sales i am yet to find a T for under $25K...

could be tempted just to buy it and then sell it...

JohnBu
28th July 2006, 03:24 PM
yeah go for it...

but the 5 door hatch isn't that sporty looking, the 3 door is a much better looker

if its a 2002 model then there is no question, for 16k thats just plain ridiculously cheap.

to be honest if its 10k cheaper than all the rest...you gotta ask why ;)

so your saying you can get a 2002 A3 turbo in probably great condition and has been on a service plan for 16k??? hell, buy me one too!

and yeah, the APR tune will bring you up too 145kw and 300nm torque for $1500.. i was looking at doing that if i bought the polo gti (same engine...)

are you serious? my sisters car looks mint for a 6 yr old car, but it has over 300k on the clock...

if it had 200000kms on it i wouldnt even consider it...
hell even 80k is slightly above average for its age...but then it is a fleet car.

i do agree though that you should buy on condition not km's eg: dont walk away from a high k's car if they can prove its been well looked after etc...

and dont jump into something that isnt that great but has low km's...

Same basic engine... But the Polo Gti has a different series of the engine.

as long as it has been well looked after and serviced then there is nothing wrong with the amount of k's it has done.

my SSS has done over 210k on the clock now and is better then ever(engine wise that is hehehehe)

but then again it is a nissan and built too last.

still 80k is good for a fleet car.

i would deff buy it and if you dont like it sell it for more...

Yeah take it for a drive, see what its like, and take it from there.
Personally, for that price, I would get it.
If you can then sell it for more, do it.
I dont know too much about Audi's, but from what I've heard from owners, they are a great car.

ive driven both b6 & b7 a4's and the b6 literally felt like a boat. i can only imagine an a3 will be same unless it has the factory s-line suspension pack, which is what the b7 i drove had, the b7 both in a3 & a4 are absolutely fantastic.

the older a3 shape is dated and i dont think it has aged well, but everyone has their own opinion..

the a4 2t quattro with paddle shifts and s-line suspension is very quick :o and i dont recommend chasing it up mt glorious (for our qld members)
