View Full Version : NGK: Great Customer Service

Not often we get to experience really good customer service. and when we do, it's a great change.

I called NGK in Melbourne to confirm a suitable spark plug for my car. The Lady I spoke to was very helpful and pleasant. As we finalised our conversation, she offered to fax me more information. At that point I had no fax access. No problem, she said, I'll post you some stuff.

On my doorstep was an A4 envelope stuffed with info. I got tech info, pamphlets, sparkplug gapping tool, pen, and a full 230+ page 2005/06 parts catalogue.

I gotta say, that's not bad customer service. :)

Good to hear Wayne! It's great to still see some good old fashioned customer service still around. I had a similar thing with Lukey/Walker Exhausts. Rang them about some queries and they sent out a whole lot of broshures and info and stickers, really makes a difference.

Considering the cost of postage, I was really quite impressed.

And I got stickers as well.!!!

Not desperate to get them at this point. I understand they are around $15-20 each. Not sure about timeframes.

i have the bosch catalogue :D.
most opels run the same plug, the cali turbs run a 1 grade colder than the astra if i remember correctly.
the bosch rep was telling me ngk runs their temp grade in reverse to bosch, bosch is lower number is cooler, ngk he said was lower number was hotter.

wayne, does it have a bosch part number cross ref section?

Turblue
21st June 2006, 06:32 PM
Yes it has a cross reference chart....

CAL.16V

the lower the number, the colder grade it is i always thought..... might be the case only with ngk?

my stock ones were something like bkr8ev - 11 or something.. i now have bcp7evx , one grade colder ...

Turblue

With NGK. the higher the number, the colder the plug.

JasonGilholme

NGK is the oposite way around compared to other brands. Kinda stupid.

Also, i've read, and heard from numerous sources that its a bad idea to run iridium plugs in a turbo'd car. They DEFINATELY say stick with copper.

Ok, ok, fill me in on this. If i'm guessing correctly, colder spark plugs give better performance?

Whats the advantages of going to much more expensive spark plugs?

My understanding is that in a high performance engine, it is fair to assume that more heat is generated in the cylinders. This extra heat can destroy plugs faster. So to combat this we use a "colder" plug. This means that it can dissipate heat better.

not needed for a na car.. only need a colder grade plug when running say double the boost as standard or nos

auzvectra
24th June 2006, 02:45 PM
well on the astra, would the double boost be 14psi or 24psi :).
i know what plugs i wanna run, but i just havent got round to gettn em.
but they are bosch 5's. super plus. recommended by vmax for the sri-t, even for stock.

copper for turbo'd cars?

who's feeding you this?

Is this why all suby turbo's come standard with Platinum's?

difference between Platinum and Iridium isnt as big as that as Platinum and copper...apparently.

Also, u can get finer point plat/iridium plugs...but be warned, they can foul real quick or burn out real quick.

CAL.16V

holding say 1 bar you need colder plugs and gap it down to about 0.6 .. 0.7 for stock .. astra should be the same

yeah same.. the SR20DET's come with platinums from the factory...

I've gapped mine larger than stock to take advantage of my new coil though. A decent set of plugs is a worthy upgrade, least you know you wont need to change them for a long while!

copper is std on the astra turbo.

i'm assuming platinum is used in the wrx because the engine bay is a mess and the plugs arent easy to change, therefore they have elected to reduce the service cost by having plugs which require less replacing.

nothing to do with performance, just that platinum last alot longer.

exactly right

anyone who has worked on TE-TW Magna V6 will know that the front plugs are normal and the rear are plantiumn for the simple fact the rears require plenumn chamber removal to get to them

yep, and the magna's dont come off as easily as the v6 veccy.
with the magna u need to split the manifold.
the astra's plugs are bosch flr8ldcu standard, which are just a standard bosch plug, and also run in most astra's, barina's, calibra's (ect turbo - fr7dc), combo's, and vectra's.
vmax sujest a 5 for the astra turbo's (standard fr5dc, super plus 'yttrium' f5dpor)
ngk comparisons are, standard bcpr7es/bcpr7es-11, super plus bcp7ev.
the standard plugs are about $3.50 each for the cooler plugs
the super plus are about $20 each for the cooler plugs
the original plugs are about $6-8 each.
