That gives an insight into what i pm'd you turblue.. This is where it goes "slow" or starts going slow...

[edit - online (http://www.dnsstuff.com/) tracert gives a VERY very different reading - indicating that it is something to do with us over here and them over there - possibly something with the international link or something... NFI what now, but someone's buggered up something!]

yeah m8 its slow, change hosts, it also may be a server issue, it could be boged down with requests and cant handle it, do you know if its a shared box or a dedicated ( unlikley ), another possibility is the network, or more specificly the route it takes to reach us. might be water esd dodgy telephone company exchanges, you name it. Its more then likely the rout it takes, but it working fast for one section then crawls for another, seems more to me like a codeing issue or server problems. Get the hosting company to do a thourgh check of it and all the apps on there particuly php and apache ( if your not useing a diff app), if they failt to rectify the problem, change hosts or host a cut down version ( for experimental purposes) on a different server all together, any one here with basic computer skills ( i mean a bit more then how to turn it on dummy ) will be able to set up a unix box and host it from home. althpugh there are plenty of free web hosts even mildly cheap web hosting companys out there.

Yup, my webspace (www.behavingbadly.net) is there if you need some space or something.... The fact that we didn't have big problems till the website update (although a lot complained before too) that indicates something to do with the coding.....
If you have a look in my gallery
www.behavingbadly.net/gallery
you will find it pretty fast, but my pings to my site are also 220+ms..... however i don't have ANY speed problems with it usually.....

I would love to host in Australia to minimise the hops. The big issue is the cost. The quotes I have are in excess of $400 per year. And sorry, I'm not wearing that..!!!!

Some Aussie hosts are cheap, but when you look at the fine print the servers are in the USA.

Speed issues existed before the code change. I understand that some pages may load slower due to a more advanced page. Something is not right here. I guess I just need to keep looking.....

Turblue - try installing another copy of SOMETHING on the server and check load times for that - like a basic install of phpBB or a "gallery"..... obviously use a hidden url and try out load times then.... or get some of us to..... If you find the gallery, (or whatever) is fast then it's coding, if not, it's the server speed... The problem with this site is it's an "all in one" thing, may be the problem

That's "faster".... but not much.... with the speed of the image loading it would appear that bandwidth overall may be an issue.......

I get similar pings from my own site....

Yeah its slow..
I'm on Westnet 256k ADSL..

It could be an SQL database issue.. if your database is large and bulky then it would slow things down as the pages are requested the right things have to be loaded from the database.

do you have GZIP or anything like that turned on for the forum? - this could also slow things down...

I've got a webserver at work I have unlimited access to, if you wanna do a backup of your database and send it to me, I'll setup a forum on my server using the OpelAus database and I can then tell you if its slow to access - if it is then that tells you what your problem is, then you'll just have to optimise it.

Turblue
11th August 2005, 07:37 PM
Damo.

The db is gzipped. I have pruned about 10 meg off it. The backup is 20 meg. I have optimised it. This issue cropped up a couple of months ago even before I changed the look. Some testing I have done shows that speed is crap even on my homepage which is held on the same server and is only html with no sql. I doubt it is sql related.

I am hearing issues with other USA based sites, which leads me to believe the issue is with one of the links to the USA. This has been mentioned before. Links using Singtel are experiencing severe issues. We are getting large packetloss on Singtel links.

http://www.internettrafficreport.com/australia.htm

I am currently doing some testing on another server to isolate issues. Thanks for the offer.

Edit... Kinda looks as though I was wrong. :o:o
