View Full Version : Dont you just love the Fuel economy on an Astra G 1.8

i have to say, for a little 1.8 with someone of a little grunt it has a really good fuel economy.

I travel to canberra each week from sydney. so i thought i would test the fuel economy. I also know for a fact that travelling to canberra uses up a little more petrol than coming back (i think its more of a upward slope travelling to canberra). But nevetherless here are the results.

1. Sydney to Canberra Using Shell Optimax 98. I averaged 6.74L/100km

2. Canberra to Sydney Using BP Ultimate 98. I averaged 5.76L/100km

Next couple of weeks im going to test and see which out of all the available 98 Ron fuels gives better if any fuel efficiency.

How F..king Awesome is the second fuel economy.

Car was travelling at 110km/h using cruise control. And included driving out from smithfield to the highway and vice versa.

where the traffic conditions the same when driving thru sydney?

DirtyHarry

well on the highway, it was just straight and 110km/h all the way. as for getting to the highway from smithfield isnt that far. about 15km and that was traffic at 7am and 3.30pm on the return trip. i guess the city traffic wasnt that bad actually.

Very interesting...

Yes, those sound like pretty good figures to me.

Do you know how the fuel efficiency of 98 octane fuels compare to regular 91 octane? Have you ever tried calculating the mileage you get out of regular 91? It would be nice to see how they stack up against 98 octane fuel, to see how much of a difference it can make.

Thanks for posting... I would definitely be interested to see how your comparison of the different 98 octane fuels turn out.

hmmm....impressive figures u got there.

i know ultimate is a relatively better fuel compared to optimax (think with the 4c discount and an accompanying drop in quality).

very good figures anyhow

whats the milage and year of the car? i assume its manual.

I did 6.6 or 6.7L/100 from syd to brisbane and the same on the way back..... That includes ragging it a bit sometimes and overtaking and stuff.... it's a 2.2L manual.... the 1.8L gets good economy on the freeway.... depending on how you drive it too lol :)

mine is s 2005 astra classic manual. (2 months old)
i havent tried the normal 91 ron fuels, since the astra has a high compression of 220psi, i just cant see 91 ron fuel being any good for it.

sydney to canberra and back on crappy fuel, plus lots of driving around down there, we used just over half a tank of fuel and by sydney i'm talking drummoyne to canberra.... that was in my car which is the 1.8l

few weeks before we took my car down to canberra, we took my mums, her's is also 1.8l and we did the same number of kms there and backa nd driving around, but we had to stop at one set of the twin servo's and fill hers back up.

go figure...... hers has cruise control which my other half uses all the time, i dont use it coz i get bored. my car doesnt have cruise.

I regularly go Canberra to Liverpool and back on a tank of fuel, and usually have about 100km left to spare.

Generally consumption is about 6L/100km for that trip, creeping up to 6.5L/100km depending on time of year (more fuel in summer, obviously).

i can't give accurate figures cause i gotta throw papers; but even after that stop-start punishment; i can still manage around 500km a tank (mine is an auto member..)

I get 500km a tank around town. Filled up this morning $1.358/l. I did just over 600km on a tank highway driving but i tend to drive at about 120-130km/hr on the highway and thats when it starts to suck the juice again.

i didnt mention this before because i thought you werejust referringto long distances, but driving around the city, as in drummoyne to st leonards every day in peak hour traffic, plus all the other "city" trips we do in my astra, a full tank, we can get between 550 and 600kms before the fuellight comes on. that happens all the time

i get about 400kms travelling from castle hill to alexandria along parra rd, which i thnk is pretty poor (considering i travel at 6am).

i only fill mobil 8000, but wonder if any others are better - ultimate, vortex or optimax?

yeah the fuel economy is very good with the 1.8L. i got from gladesville to dubbo, drove around for 2 days and then 100km out of dubbo back towards sydney and only then needed to fill up....it was about 780km

i drove from brissy to biloela, (near gladston ) on a tank and still had enoughf to drive around biloela, roughfly 800k, but normaly get between 6 and 700 when im driveing down the coast 5 days a week, the worst i ever got was 250, very hard driveing :)

drumoyne to Canberra...Without driving around is about 640 KM return, Astra's have 52 litre tanks, you say just over half a tank, lets call it 30 litres...your saying you use 4.7L/100 :|

380 / 40 = 9.5 km per L

Astra's have a 52L tank so...

9.5 * 52 = 494km per tank in an Astra that is being driven the exact same way as you drive your corsa....well almost anyway, you need to acount for the extra weight of the Astra.

Its a little below average but its still good if you drive alittle hard.

yeah iam about the same when hooning, about 420-450 driving like a fool, or about 520-550 with alot of highway driving.

its pretty close to the same consumption as my old sri 2.2l which was 480 hooning or 550 in highway driving... srit's are so bad on the fuel when stock.

when do you guys fill up (ie: how many litres/kms to empty?).

i generally fill up with about 80-100 kms to go, and by then i've only travelled 300km (350km at most).....

the problem is i find the last 80 kms according to the trip computer to be unreliable - seems more like 60 or 70 than actually 80.

when i took the car to be serviced, holden did some cleaning job to the engine (eco 2.2) cause i complained of poor mileage - i wonder if it will actually work :|

The best trip we had was Pennant Hills (nth Sydney) to Broadbeach (Gold Coast) on a tank...then put just over 50L from memory...I think thats about 800-850Km...I forget, can anyone correct me ! ! !

That was on the coast rd...on the way back we went through New England and used more petrol...turns out the SRiT is better on fuel at about 80-90KM/H than 110-120KM/H

do you have an issue with how much fuel i used do you?

thats your problem not mine. the fuel economy in my astra is pretty good and i have no issues with it.

what sorta tyre pressures do u have? <<a major factor in fuel economy...

with 28psi rear and 29psi front, got 540kms per tank in mixture of city/hwy driving.

any reason for that? i just run 36 across all fours cause that was recommended to me from the guys at Bob Jane....and i trust them...was running 38 (f) and 36 (r)

NUTTTR
7th August 2005, 07:03 PM
Yeah, running anything less than 40 if you take corners hard = bad tyre wear...... if you drive slow then 38 i'd recommend...
Less in the rear makes the car handle more even...
I'm NORMALLY running 38 in the front 34 in the rear, but i'm trying to wear out the centre of the tyre as much as the edges are worn :)
So added a little more... 40 makes the front wheels a little more slippery and 38 is much better grip than 36... i can feel it when my tyres are at 36psi because of the handling difference!

Gildo
7th August 2005, 08:24 PM
i run mine on 40 psi, 38 on the back, (205/40/17).
anything under 35 i start to feel alot of tyre role, which doesnt make me conftable when im cornering hard.
i find 38 a very good level, but i cant afford the outside tyre ware, so i run them on 40.

Exactly what i've found too!! Any lower than 38 and outside wears badly with heavy cornering!

38 is best in the wet, gives excellent grip, 40 is definately a little slippery, but it hardly rains here :)
