Ok, so I thought I would start a sort of E-Peen competition between us OpelAus Owners. The prize will be bragging rights until someone else beats you! Sure, you could lie, but, would your conscience let you do that?

How to enter:
Copy and Paste the below with your details filled in, in reply to this thread.
Try and beat your previous figures!

I wish my TS would give me fuel consumption readouts, but I think only the SRi's do that?

Yeah only an SRi feature in the G as far as i know. Updated original post to show transmission (being auto)

So technically there will be 4 1st place goers here.... lowest diesel reading (manual and auto), and lowest petrol reading (manual and auto) lol

Could be more, if we go by Model too. I'm no expert, but Turbo would use a different amount, and newer models "should" use less. BUT, it's more for shits and giggles, I guess we could let the Barina and Corsa guys in on it if we wanted, make it an OPELAUS comp. Are there many diesel Astra's in Aus?

yeah there are heaps, but not many are on here unfortunately. would still be interesting to see what people are getting, my X18XE1 (2000 Astra City) was getting roughly the same as yours is now, which is good for the age

I was pleasantly surprised when I did my sums! Thought consumption would have been ALOT higher.

Considering it came from factory with 7.8L Urban, it's pretty close, although, since I bought it, I've been running it on BP 98 Ultimate, to clean the system out. Will drop it back to 95 in a couple of fills.

unless you're making over 300 atw that's still really poor.
on e85 with over 200 at all 4's i'll still be well under 15

e85 is a really poor fuel, does more harm then good, and as I said the car is driven hard, it was track only so the rev did not stay below 5000rpm for long, and avgas burns faster

sooty
18th June 2014, 06:44 PM
E85 a poor fuel...that's funny! 200 degree cooler engine charge temps, 107 octane and 30% higher density tells me different.
As long as you're enjoying your 'economy'...

andrew
18th June 2014, 06:54 PM
the problem with e85 is your engine wears out faster then normal fuel, eats seals so in the end your engine life is shorter
that's just one thing I would not trade for a little bit more power, to me I don't really care how much it use's it all about the fun it has,

adam_92
18th June 2014, 06:55 PM
Thats why you build your car for e85. You dont run e85 from a factory engine...

andrew
18th June 2014, 07:02 PM
that's true, but a lot of people don't do that, they just do the basic things and tune it to run with out doing all the things needed to keep your safe,
but that's off topic now, back to the topic, lol

sooty
18th June 2014, 07:04 PM
The only thing e85 will do is clean all the surfaces better (why you slowly introduce ethanol before you then change to final fuel filter) and cause the oil to break down quicker. Only negligence in maintenance will result in any decrease in engine life.
Given my car will do 3,000 km a year and I'll change the oil every 6 months you'd be a fool to pass up 40% extra torque below 2700rpm because of rumours and heresay. E85 also basically eliminates any chance of knock with no fine learning knock correction required and up to 5 degrees of added timing resulting in less wear on the block.
On small n/a cars it's not worth it, but turbo and higher displacement cars relish it

Used to drive an iLoad filled with Coin Bags, at least 200-400kgs in the back, and the damn thing still had some guts. Was manual, thankfully. No idea about the consumption though, as we just used the fuel card at the start of every shift, never got to fill it from empty. While it wasn't the best car, I enjoyed it more than the Hi-ace, which used to wiggle wiggle wiggle yeah while overtaking on the M7!

7.1L/100 is amazing for a van, although, as soon as you put a tool box in, I'm sure it would be 10L/100 lol. Let us know how it goes.

After 4 years, 205k km, 3 blown engines, 3 turbos and 2 clutches, all I can say is the iLoad is the biggest piece of shit to ever get ADR certification. Sure, it might have been nice to drive and had plenty of guts, but they're far from being reliable and Hyundai's "award-winning" customer service, should be investigated by the ACCC for misleading customers, as there is none. I've been driving vans for the best part of the last 15 years and I've never seen anything like this with any van I've owned or driven.

Sorry to carry on off-topic, but to think people think the iLoad is a good van, really need to listen to horror stories such as mine. And yes, I'm far from alone on this.

Going back on topic though, from what I've heard from other new Transit Custom owners, fuel economy figures are about right on the money. As for the SRi, I believe the cat may be blocking up, so I may need to do something about it.

That is a crapy car! I guess I was lucky that the work can only had 80k on it, and was Petrol, although, the clutch was long gone by the time it reached 80k, WTH is with that Hyandai?! I only did Cash In Transit for a short while, and was contracted, so gave it to the van, probably adding to its demise, which going by your post will be very soon!

BOT:
Are Turbo's meant to get better fuel consumption than NA's?
I will be keen to see what Elliot_O's consumption is, as we have almost the same cars, and while I give my car a good flogging sometimes, I am far from Brocky, so will try to decrease my consumption further with this tank, no promises though!

Depends on the tune, fuel used, heavy right foot, all those things go into the fuel consumption.
For example, my astra when I picked her up had an average on 10.6l/100kms, and average speed was 34km/h... now its 10.5l/100 and the average speed stands at 46km/h.
Mind you, watching the fuel usage go to 45L/100km when she is on song scares the crap out of me...

I used to have a BA Mk2 XR6T that produced around 280kW at the wheels and watching the instantaneous fuel consumption was interesting. Hit it on song at 13psi and the readout displayed 99.9L/100km. At the rate that car burnt fuel, it wouldn't have been far from the truth.

Double the size, double the fuel usage... makes sense... ;)

Strangely enough I have friends with 450kw-660kw xr6ts and they get amazing fuel consumption with e85.

The V6 Vectra always surprises people on the highway. It can have a drinking problem in the city but with cruise set at the usual 105 anywhere between 6.7-7.1 is normal provided there's no headwind or I'm not towing. A trailer soon upsets things

Travelled 550km so far in this thing, used just shy of half a tank of diesel. 8.2L/100km certainly kicks the sh!t out of the iLoad's economy. I worked out that based on worst case scenario being 9.0L in the Transit, I'd use about 25-30 litres less per week than I would have used with the iLoad. Based on current pricing of around $1.59/L, that's a saving of around $39.75 to $47.70 per week.

But it will be interesting to see if this figure changes once the engine has settled itself in.

there's 3 memory settings. one is life of the car, and two are re settable. i set one on delivery so it is 28km different to the life of the car. the other i reset when i go on a journey somewhere and want to know what it has been doing. not sure if it will keep doing that or reset at 10k or something? the mondeo used to reset at 2000km. oh and there is a single line trip meter on the dashboard too in the Corsa. it probably resets at 2000km

I have been recording fuel consumption for a while now and my best figures for the SRi are from April 2011:

Fuel type: 98 (Shell V-Power)
Distance since refill: 472.7 km
Litres to fill to first click: 45.77 L
Consumption figures((Lx100)/km): 9.68 L/100 km

The computer has my average consumption at 9.6 L/100 km. I would have to do an average of collected consumption data to determine whether the computer is accurate if not. Too much to add up.

Can't say those figures aren't impressive in a two tonne van doing consistent stop/start city driving. Van now has about 48000kms on the clock. I'm probably filling the tank once a week nowadays, instead of twice per week with the iLoad.

I don't bother setting up the OBD Bluetooth / Torque (Android App) too often to check this but on Friday I was doing an unusual trip (for me) and had a new phone with a larger screen so I thought, what the hell. I was interested to see my average speed on a peak time freeway trip I highly expected to have a lot of low-speed driving, if not one or more full first gear stops, on a freeway no less.

Trip was from North Fitzroy in Melbourne, down Alexandra Parade and on to the Eastern Freeway, then through the Mullum Mullum tunnel on to Eastlink and Monash Freeways. Basically the kinda ring road from inner northern Melbourne to outer South-eastern Melbourne. Trip started about 4:40PM and surprisingly I got on the Eastern, through Alexandra Pde, fairly easily. Within a kilometre or so I'd hit stagnant traffic. Surprisingly that cleared up just after Ringwood though, perhaps due to the Eastlink being a tollway? Stagnant traffic then hit me again as I merged from Eastlink on to the Monash.

Anyway, I think I probably averaged higher than 5.5L/100KM on that trip, but a late-night trip home up the Monash with no traffic gave me 5.5L/100KM despite needing the A/C on every so often to defog the windscreen.

I'm pretty happy with those figures. Did nothing major to get them other than a bit of clutching it downhill; not bothering to keep or gain speed on long constant uphill climbs; turning the A/C off whilst the screen isn't fogged; bit of slipstreaming behind trucks and SUVs where possible.

What sort of loads are you tending to carry Chris, weight wise?

Most of the time, I'm carrying anywhere upwards of 200-300kg worth of parcels/mail. Van just passed the 100,000kms mark last week and still running fine.

Weekend just gone, I was helping my parents move house. They live 100kms north of Adelaide. I hired a 12' x 6' enclosed furniture trailer to help with the job. I did approx 350kms with the trailer on and another 400kms in city traffic. Filled up today with 79.38L of diesel. 750kms / 79.38L = 10.584L/100km. Man, I love diesels. Reasonable pulling power for a two tonne van with "only" 92kW/350Nm and awesome economy.

That does sound fairly mad chris_r ... if only those ruddy new turbo diesel models weren't blowing shiteloads of pollutants into city streets already choking with truck and bus diesel fumes. Makes sense in trucks and buses until alternative power sources become mainstream but to have turbo diesels as a genuine short term answer to increasing requirements for economy, simply on the basis that diesel fuel has a better natural efficiency and turbos can solve the low-end (or mid range? I forget ...) power delivery deficit ... well I guess perhaps those pretenders over at VW proved it's not only highly dubious but a mirage (not the Mitsubishi type) as well.

But yeah, damn that's a lot of driving on minimal fuel carrying a sizable load. Sweet! Hopefully your rental at least had a roof-level exhaust pipe to blow the fumes above city pedestrians heads instead of in their faces like these flipping turbo diesel cars!

09/2003 Astra TS 1.8 CDX

Engine: Z18XE

Transmission: 4 speed Automatic (Aisin AF17)

Driving style: Sensible and to the natural liking of the transmission with the once or twice a day pedal to the medal through an intersection moment. Stop start in the week and expressways on the weekends.

My car behaves very differently depending on the fuel in it.

Caltex Vortex 95: Absolutely hates it. Consumption rises to ~9.0/100km, idles like shit and accelerates like an old Camira on heroin. Threatens to stall when A/C is engaged.

BP Premium 95: The preferred choice. ~8.1/100km, starts, idles and takes off fine providing the car isn't fully loaded. The slight savings and the fact I cart myself around most days makes this one the better option.

BP Premium 98: Pretty much the same but with a slightly quieter and smoother operation. Handles payload and hills with a smidge more gusto.

Liberty PremiuMax 100: ~8.3/100km Car seems to like it, acceleration is a bit more snappy in the lower range but I wouldn't call it more powerful. Fuel consumption slightly higher than the rest. Ethanol blend?

Mogas 98: ~7.8/100km. If I swing by Mogas and need to fill up this one is great. Especially if the car had garbage in it previously. Behaves very well and I feel that this offers the best economy. Never had a bad experience with it.

Caltex 91: Emissions+spanner light, rumble jolt burbrbrbrb and stall. (I shit you not, that was a horrible experience. It was a very hot day too.)

A full tank of the good stuff usually yields me 650-ish km.

Bad fuel has caused me a ton of strange and obscure problems. It puzzles me because even my mum's 09 SRI just takes any old fuel like a champ.
