Hi everyone great informative site
I am from Perth and looking at a 2002 Astra convertible which has a timing chain noise . The engine still runs apparently but I have not seen it. The car has done 150k km. Would the balance chain need to be replaced at this time as well.
I am a aware that there may be valve damage and will factor this into the price of the car. I am capable of replacing the chains myself. Also are there any other major issues which affect this car?

Cheers

Hi mate, check if the chains have ever been changed before, they'd definitely need doing if not, they're usually a serviceable item after 10 or so years for sure. You'd be looking at $1500 from what I've heard for all of the chains, tensioners and labor etc.

welcome to OA

be silly not to do the balance chain kit at the same time.
if the engine is running then there shouldn't be any valve damage yet. I highly recommend not letting the engine run at all until the chains are done.
