I found this on a uk forum, an astra F estate driver tells the story..
As many of you now know, my car is a write off. To say I am gutted is an under statement, before I say anything let me say this... I do not want any replies saying 'cars can be replaced, people cant' or 'you're ok, thats the main thing'.
Yes I am fine, however - a car which has taken my 3 years to build, cost me something in the region of £8000 and had so many hours and so much effort put into it is now smashed up good and proper, swilly style. I recieve no payouts from insurance as I was not covered against such 'acts of god' and as no other party was involved I can not claim for whiplash or any damages. My only possible hope is that i can claim against the council for insufficient roadside maintenance, as it is their responsibility to ensure that the road side environment is safe. Once again, chances are it'll be dismissed as an act of god though.
Truth be known, I would rather be knee capped in both legs or have a scalpal run across my forehead while being constantly twisted under a pressure of 50N. Well, maybe not... but i'd certainly have rather broken my arms. Saying all this, I am lucky to be in perfect health, even alive. If my car was not Left Hand Drive it would almost certainly be a different story.
It was Friday night and I had decided to go out for a drive about with Bass_line_junkie and P5yco, we were cruising about, my car looking nice...

At the start of the night I remember saying to Hugh, we have to make sure we have a good laugh, normally something will end up happening which ruins the night, lets make sure thats not the case tonight.
We proceeded on a drive through some nice windy roads at rather high speeds, opening up the engine which hasn't had a many good runs in the short time it was put into my car. I swear I must've been wearing a chufty badge. Watching Hugh cling on for dear life as I overtake cars on single carriageways and hearing him laugh afterwards when he realises he's not going to die.
As the night went on we calmed down and parked up in town to chat to a few others, come 1am we decided to head off home. I dropped Hugh back and then drove over to saltash and then through to torpoint - to drop monkey (p5yco) home. After dropping him back I began to head back home to Saltash, the lanes were pitch black, it was very windy with the occasional shower pelting down. As i continued through the lanes, at a fairly consistant and albeit safe 40-50mph I began realising the winds had caused alot of branches etc to fall from tree's, avoiding this easily enough I didn't realise what awaited me further along the road. I drove across a straight, up a slight incline and then at the brow of the hill i saw before me a fallen tree, the time was around 2am, the tree was up-rooted from the left hand side bank, and had fallen diagonally down across the entire road. Its trunk was about as wide as a beer keg with branches coming off it around the size of vanessa feltz's thighs. Within a split second of seeing the tree, registering it and reacting to it my car was in contact with it, it all happened within the blink of an eye, the left hand side of my car managed to fit under the angled tree, however the right hand side of the roof made contact with the main trunk, the branches smashed against the front of the car. All I remember from this point is opening my eyes to see the roof and windscreen almost level with my waist over the passenger seat. I said aloud 'its proper f**ked'. I noticed my door was ajar, i cudn't open it so i booted it open and got out, i got back in to get my phone, i got back out, i got back in as the sound of dizzee rascal 'i luv u' was rather ironic. I turned it off. I got back out, stepped back, and looked at my car...
"ah f**k, sh*t." - *BOOT CAR WING* *BOOT CAR BUMPER* piece of sh*t".
I then phoned my dad and had a short conversation along the lines of...
"i f**king just smashed my f**king car into a f**king tree which had fallen the f**k into the road, i have no f**king credit so call me back".
In the time it took him to work out how to use his phone and call me back I had txt my gf to tell her whats happened. My dad phoned and asked where i was and then said he'd be there asap, my gf then rang and said she'd be there asap. After getting off the phone I heard another car screaming it from the opposite direction, i ran towards its approach waving and flagging him down to slowwww the f**k down, he began to brake when he saw me, he broke even harder when he saw the tree and stopped about 1m from its trunk - saving him a nasty head on collision. He was very thankful and asked if i needed help, i told him to go home and drive safely and not as fast as he was. Not long after the same procedure occured, this time the idiot was going even faster, he locked up and stopped inches from the tree, he put his window down as i approached his car to see he was ok, he thanked me but then said he wishes he'd smashed up his car so he cud get a new one... i gave out a fair bit of abuse saying its not such a joke when it actually happens to you. And sent him on his way.
Eventually my old man turns up, as do the police and some dude with a chainsaw, then my gf and her best mate.
The car is being stripped for spares, if theres anything you'd like, drop me a pm, i will advertise it all in 'for sale' soon enough. The stereo etc is being kept for my next car, which I hope to hunt down soon enough.
