tech dwell meter help?

I have a tech dwell meter just got it given to me I dont know how to use it my guess would be to check to alternator. But still dont know how to read the tech an the dwell part has to wires coming from it black an red. Any help will be greatly appreciated

You got given it because it fairly useless these days. It's for measuring the dwell time in old style ignition with distributor and points. Modern cars the ecu controls dwell time. You would hook the the red wire to the negative side of the coil and the black to a earth then start the engine.
