Opel will attempt to buck the SUV boom by offering a small seven-seat wagon in Australia within months.

The German brand’s Zafira Tourer has been spotted on Sydney streets, with the company set to offer the car by the middle of 2013.

Traditionally a very slow section of the market, the Zafira Tourer will compete with the likes of Toyota’s Prius V and Kia’s Rondo 7, the latter of which is set to be replaced with an all-new model in the coming months.

If the Zafira nameplate sounds familiar, that’s because Holden previously sold the Astra-based version of the car between 2001 and 2006.

However, the new model is larger inside and out, measuring 4.65 metres long, 1.68m tall and 1.88m wide, and has a stretched 2.76m wheelbase for more interior space.

Opel is expected to make an announcement confirming details of the Zafira Tourer shortly, but Drive can confirm the car will be offered with a twin-turbo diesel engine producing 143kW of power and 400Nm of torque. Opel is expected to offer six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

The diesel model is capable of a 0-100km/h time of 8.9 seconds, and fuel consumption is rated at 5.6L/100km on the European test cycle.

Opel describes the Zafira Tourer as a “lounge on wheels”, but despite the focus on comfort, the car is also very practical. The second row consists of three sliding individual seats that can be folded flat, and the third row chairs can also be flattened. The result is a capacious 1860 litre space, while the boot is a large 710L with the third row stowed.

Stay tuned for more on the Opel Zafira Tourer as it comes to hand.

I wouldn't mind an opc/gsi zafira. Fun and practical at the same time.

As long as they don't pull an Insignia and only bring it here with an auto box. Having said that, twin turbo diesel and six speed manual box sounds really tempting.....

Opel's MPV's are always underrated - and I'm glad they are bringing the Zafira back. We drove a Meriva (Corsa based mini-MPV) through a lot of France a few years ago now and it was a brilliant little car

Unfortunately Australia is obsessed with 4WD and fake 4WD and people will discount this because it doesnt have a raised ride height and a spare wheel on the tailgate.

Manual for the Zaffy ? For the peeps that will be driving it Auto will def be the most popular ..... And 8.9 seconds seems slow for that spec although imagine the diesel box DTUK will come out with ;)
