Hey all,

My trusty old Compaq NC6400 is dying a slow horrible death (once i throw it out the window, should make that death quicker) so need advice on a new one.

All laptops look the same to me, so nerds i need your advice on the ones that are good and the ones to stay away from.

I mainly use it for internet and to download movies, shows and songs. I don't play games or anything so don't need anything set up for that.

Also need to be able to use my IPF but i can d/l XP Mode for that.

Cheers in advance!

Steve

With what's around you can get something pretty cheap.

My suggested specs for you

Intel i5 , 4gb ram, 750gb hard drive and windows 7 ultimate NOT windows 8

Can go to i7 and 8gb ram for more speed if your impatient :p

Exactly what Pete suggested...

BUT

Make sure it comes with Windows 7 professional or higher. That's what you need to run XP mode. if you can't get a laptop with it, you have that legitimate copy that I chased down for you that can be installed on it as a last resort.

if you are over here anytime soon I can help you shop for one if you like.

The $649 one... buy another 4gb stick of RAM and win7 pro and you're done.
Bloody bargain if you ask me.

I've had an i5 inspiron 15r for nearly 2 years now and it's great. The new 15r's have much better build quality as well which is a bonus.

3 minute battery life on a badboy like that :) - Similar specs to my desktop pc.

Excellent deal and value for money the only draw back is they only read CD/DVD and can not burn to CD/DVD. My sister almost bought one but did not cause she needs to burn files to discs for her clients.

Yeah i'd want a burner, mainly to burn cd's for my car (yes it has a prehistoric cd only head unit) otherwise i'd just get an iPad or similar Tablet.

Ps, you can buy a USB DVD burner if you want a thinner laptop.

Makes sense as how often do you use the DVD drive.

What are you talking about? hahaha! Of course it has a DVD burner!
"Optical Drive:
12.7" SATA Tray Load DVD+/-RW"

+/- RW means it can burn both standards of writeable or rewriteable disc

12.7" dvd drive, does it have a built in record player?

It's gotta be faster than the Commodore 64 with the cassette tape drive.
