So to summarise

"The Opel range will start with the 1.4-litre Corsa three-door hatch in the middle of the light car brigade at $16,490, with Astra starting at $23,990 for the five-door hatch, followed by the three-door Astra GTC at $28,990.

The flagship Insignia – available in sedan and Sports Tourer wagon body styles – will kick off at $38,490 for the base petrol sedan, with a $2000 premium for the wagon."

So that is a price range where is all the other pricing ....

So what's everyone's thoughts on the pricing?

Too much? Too cheap? Spot on?

I'm quite surprised, they are very well priced imo. $29k for the GTC woooooooo!!

Think it's pretty spot on to be honest. Was thinking i'd have to get a base model for Kylie, but now i can get what we actually wanted!

Do OA members get a discount?

i think its a stunning price set..

Just looking at the astra @ $24k+orc against

Cruze = $23k+orc
Golf =$22orc
Focus = $25k+orc
3 = $22k + orc

(rrp from carsale ^)

its a highly 'realistic' price

Good comparison there ;)

Especially the comparison against the Cruze. Dont think Holden will be too happy though!

remember about 2months ago we laughed at the story of how the astra might damage cruze sales saying how the price would be no where near the cruze and it wont damage that end of the market...

They' be counting on the 5 door being the volume seller - and most people would probably be fine with the 1.4T for performance. From what I've read and heard about the Veloster Turbo, it's not as exciting to drive as it looks, plus with the Astra you get the whole "German" thing - so you would kind of expect a bit of a premium. Cheapest brand new 2 door Golf you can buy is the GTI at 10K more - and all that has is an extra 23kW and makes you fall asleep when you look at it.

tbh an na version of those motors would be a gutless slug. fuel economy and emissions would go out the window with it too.

true but atleast a corsa, put a 1.6 in it, and you have a nice little p plate legal car...

i just see it as a bit of a hole in the marketing strategy... other then that its an awesome price list... 2.0L insignia diesel wagon for me :D

Up here in Qld the p plate laws were changed so some turbo cars under a certain power to weight ratio are allowed. think this may also be the case in Victoria.

That's it, it's now based on power to weight ratio in QLD.

its a highly 'realistic' price

Cruze starts at 21.5K + ORC ( i think you add 1400 for the 1.4T option)
Focus starts at 22K + ORC
3 starts at 20.3K + ORC
i30 starts at $21K + ORC

Of course the Focus 1.6L sells for about 20K driveaway at the moment. The 2L for way less than 25K driveway.
Expect deals on the Astra from day one.

What power can the tuners get out of the 1.6L?

Good question and not having driven either of them, I couldn't say. Although I think I would feel more comfortable with the Astra initially as I've driven FWD and FWD biased AWD cars the last 11 years regularly. The Astra would probably be more practical/suitable for me as well - plus IMHO, I believe you can have just as much fun in a FWD car as you can in a RWD car (different fun, but fun nonetheless :) )

The Astra’s pricing does start higher than most of its rivals, kicking off at $23,990 for a five-door hatch. The more style-focused three-door Astra GTC also carries a fashionable premium and begins at $28,990.

Good pricing in general, however I think it should 1-2k lower on each model. Although they are targeting VW, no way in hell does Opel have any chance charging the same price and being successful. VW is a very known brand here, so an average Joe would go the VW for the same price. Yes, Opel can afford to charge a bit of a premium over Asian competitors, but not with VW...or even Peugeot. The base GTC is a decent price, top spec not so much. The Insignia is too much, the Mondeo, Accord Euro etc look way too appealing at their price points compared to an unheard of Insignia. Keep in mind these models are years old now, especially the Corsa.

Good luck to Opel, they are awesome cars and I will check them out. Just be cautious and have some killer incentives along with realistic expectations! "Opel has said it is targeting about 15,000 sales a year in Australia by 2015." That is a joke, especially when established brands such as Honda and Subaru get no where close to that, and they have been in Australia for decades!

dsuhiti91

Hahah, so the Corsa is $18 500 for a base model (auto) plus dealer delivery, 4 speed auto, steel wheels and even no USB input with iPod connectivity or MP3 compatibility. It has rear manual windows for crying out loud! I'm an Opel fan, but this is a joke! Who would pay something like that for a car that originally came out 6 years ago (with a facelift)!

:out: Picks up flame shield.

dunno where you go this info from...

the corsa has a cd30mp3 (same as the astra H facelift had) with aux-in, climate control, electric mirrors and windows (doesnt say anything about manual in 5dr), park assist, ESP, ABS, EPS. Steel wheels yes but so does most cars in that category (the polo does and mazda 2 and i20)

I think its a good bit of kit for the price. but id spend the extra on an astra

So would I but that's because a corsa would be too small. Dshuiti has a point though about the 4 speed auto. Its pretty ordinary for 2012, but then again the corsa was old before it even got here.

Unless they have stuffed things up. Mentions manual rear windows. "USB input with iPod connectivity and MP3 compatibility won’t be available until an MY13 upgrade." Not climate air either, and it doesnt have cruise control. Spec for spec, I would much rather a Fiesta or even the new Rio - without a doubt they are better cars (both value and dynamically).

Yes only June stock will be hitting our showrooms.
All dealers have been allocated their first order by Opel themselves, thereafter the dealers got to choose their variants for July, August etc

How much would you be willing to pay for one?

In all honesty I would expect somewhere in the high $50's low $60k range for a fully loaded wagon. Has to compete with R36 and V60, so seems a logical price point to start at. Possibly a bit lower than them due to branding issues.

If i'm honest... i recon Opel will storm it over here!

When i returned to England i was amazed to see how many new Astras were on the road. I'm not going to lie, every other turning i went down there is an astra or corsa.
I recon due to the rise in petrol costs and diesel engines becoming faster with better mpgs it is perfect timing. Also, when you buy an astra or Corsa you feel like you get your moneys worth! well i do personally. Even my mum has changed her golf for a new astra corsa! i guess the recession hit England more than here.

I would place 5.00$ bet that in 2 years from now we will be seeing a lot of these cars! Even if i'm wrong... i'm still buying an opel :D

That's it, it's now based on power to weight ratio in QLD.

Just had a look and NSW is still on the no turbo unless diesel bandwagon

still love the WA rules...

Oh youre on P plates, and have a supercharged/turbo V8.... move along...

Doesn't specify the engines in that. As they pay more tax or whatever it is based on engine size, there could be a heap of 1.0l engines. Be stuffed if I'd drive something like that here

What is it with the 'Golf' fan base in this country? i really don't rate them. I would never pay for what they cost in this country neither.

I'm ignoring the reviews. I've driven the mk6, i like it. pound for pound.. i don't think you can do better.

Let's see what people are saying 6 months from now. I'm excited. going to be good.

I don't understand why are you so excited as Opel is cheap in Europe. Also Daewoo or Chevrolet Cruze is less than 10000 Euros. Holden makes a fortune with it.
The car manufacturers take us for a ride in Australia or it may be the dealers.
I will not buy a brand new car from Opel sorry guys. They are too expensive. For 2 years old cars the price is halved.

I find that very hard to believe based on current prices for late model Astra H variants...

Sorry guys
I am new in Opel community and I don't get the excitement.
Hopefully the Opel which I have will bring me in the same state like you.
I am impressed with the community which I am part of and to see so many posts and Opel is just arriving next month.
Please keep us informed with the new models so when I can afford there will be enough information.
Good luck and thanks heaps.

I am not in a position to recommend anything. I just thought that the price is too high comparing with how much they cost in other places.
And this is not for Opel but for ALL car manufacturers.
I believe a realistic price for a base model should be under 20k.
Anyway that's me so don't worry as long as many people thing is a good price it must be.

I'm open to Opinions of other members. But not stupid unrelated nonsense.
For one you have no idea how much vehicles cost in Australia. This is an Australian OPEL Forum. We pay a premium for all cars in this Country compared to Europe and the Americas.
And Two, I can see just from Photos that the interior quality of say, an Astra or the Insignia is miles ahead of the Crap we get in the Cruze over here.

I agree we pay a premium for all cars.
I have converted the price from Euros to AUD and the base price for Astra is AUD19000.
Sorry for the stupidity of my remarks. I hope that I did not upset you.
I really appreciate what you guys do here and I feel like I have attacked you.
I had no ideea that my say will affect so many people. Sorry and I am off so I don't do more damage.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Unfortunately transport costs and government taxes etc raise the prices on our cars. Have a look at a BMW over there and convert it to AUD. Way it is unfortunately, but I believe the new Opel's are priced well against their direct competitors here

Astra hatchback is $19k AUD. Add on transport costs, taxes (from our great god government), and other hidden costs we dont see, and you have a reasonably priced $24k AUD car (as per here (http://www.opelaus.com/forums/showthread.php?33486-Opel-Pricing-Released!)). So I understand to a point, but its only really a 5 grand difference ;)

Might see if I can go down to the Opel dealer here in Canbera at lunch and see what they have in stock. Got a bit excited last night looking at the Opel site and seeing that they're bringing the Astra wagon here again - but then disappointed to see it's auto only. Then again I'd probably be the only person in Australia interested in a manual turbo petrol Astra wagon, and even then chances are I'll still buy a Subaru BRZ instead :)

The 1.4 Turbo engine is far too under powered... For me anyway. The Oiler would be my pick as well.

No, you aren't. Having discounted the Insignia (they won't put a manual in that either), the Astra wagon would also be my pick - but again, I'd require a manual...
