Hyundai Veloster Turbo, terrible name but it looks good and has the figures to back it!!

1.6-litre turbocharged engine producing 150kW of power and 265Nm of torque (the regular one pumps just 103kW/167Nm). It's available mated to a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic transmission. Its boosted power outputs put it within reach of other hot hatches of measure such as VW's Golf GTI (155kW/280Nm), despite the German model's 2.0-litre larger engine. Early reports suggest the Veloster Turbo will weigh 1270 kilograms, undercutting the Golf GTI by 90 kilograms.

i wouldnt say they arent reliable and not all dealers are wankers, EVERY car company have a dealership or dealers where there are "wankers" and every car breaks down ;) and its a very nice looking car, fully speced itll probabaly come in 20K cheaper than a VW equiv

It's a nice bit of kit. Interesting rear roof and it looks a little like the Honda Civic Type R with its high wing. Depending on pricing, it might carve out a nice niche for itself. I like the idea of a Golf GTI with DSG, but I think they are too expensive, even 2nd hand.

Having worked in a Hyundai dealership in the workshop and been to heaps of exclusive meetings and releases etc. I can tell you that 5 years ago Hyundai said they would be in the top 5 in 5 years. They did it. Now they have said that they will be in the top 3 battling with the biggest by 2015 and with the upcoming releases of cars etc and there expansion in the market with heavy vehicles/trucks and stuff I well believe that they will get there

So, I was on my way home from work, playing nice with the traffic on the Monash, until I saw these two foreign looking cars on the back of a truck. Lo and behold, a couple of Velosters.... I wasnt 100% sure if they were or not so I got close to the back and saw the Veloster badge. Yep, definitely velosters lol

Now I will admit, these look a bit better than those photos above, because the ones above looked waaaay to busy for my liking. These probably arent the turbos because they didnt have turbo badges on them (based on the assumption that the turbos may have a badge on there).

Nonetheless, they looked quite nice actually. The white was probably my fav out of the two...

Amen brother, I couldn't agree with you more and I'm glad I'm not the only one. I was starting to think this was a Korean car forum! I know its my opinion but the proportions are all wrong, that nose is just hideous and as for the 2 doors on one side...what were they thinking!

I hate to admit it but I have always quite liked the Hyundai 'performance' cars - the Tiburon, Genesis, and now this...If only they could rebadge them as Hondas or Toyotas....a lot more people would be buying them then! I'd rather have an FT-86 or CR-Z despite the notable difference in power, purely for the japanese quality (although I'm sure the Hyundai is just as good, if not better)

What's with the overemphasized arches???

I don't understand the appeal of these sorts of pug-looking hatches. They're simply fugly. But hey, each to their own.

To some degree, even the Focus RS is vulgar in it's own way:

http://www.themotorreport.com.au/content/image/f/o/ford_focus_rs_02-4b77a7f648e73.jpg

Definitely looks tough, but it'd be like dating Courtney Love - you will wake up one morning and think, "OMFG, what have I done???"

The Golf R? Good God, can you lack any more imagination?

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/03/lead6-2012-volkswagen-golf-r.jpg

All biases aside, I seriously think the forthcoming (hopefully) Astra OPC is, hands-down, one of the hottest hatches ever made. Not a misplaced line, not a misjudged curve. This was designed by an Artist.

Forgive me if I don't believe what some guy on the Internet said......

Why would they say they are not bringing it if they are? Why wouldn't they use a hot hatch draw card to try and get more people excited?

I'm sure they will bring the OPC...... if the business case for it stacks up. They're not going to homologate more models than they have to - otherwise the whole range will just get too expensive and will fail.

At the moment - I'll just go with the official word. If they bring the OPC model, I'll get just as excited as the next person about it.

lol, notice I choose 1994... As as staunch supporter/current sponsor/former champion/soon to be manger of a 3 car team, of the Excel Rally Series, I made sure I didn't exclude X3 Excel!

Still, the joke (and the subsequent point behind it) still stands. There's VERY few car companies in the world that can't do anything wrong, and Hyundai is one of them. European design with Japanese build quality, minus the lengthy time frames required by Japanese companies to make decisions, will make them (and I called this 5 years ago) the largest car company in the world in a decade's time.

They release the i30 diesel, and win green car of the year and beat the euro's at their own game. They release the iLoad (of which I personally own one) and they make the Hiace/Express look stupid... Whether 'Korean' is your cup of tea or not, they're making better cars than 95% of the market. And ironically, manufacturers like Toyota, who 'apparently' have the reputation of build quality, can't take a trick... ie. failing brakes, sticking throttles etc etc....

The only gripe I had with them (and this ended up costing me a podium in an event) is until about 5 years ago, Korean's didn't know how to finish off sharp metal edges properly. We had the main engine harness cut by the edge of the hole in the firewall that under rally (read: bouncing off the scenery) conditions, worked it's way through the grommet... The auto elecy who eventually found the problem said that was very common of Korean cars until late.

gmonkey
17th January 2012, 03:07 PM
hyundais current lineup is flawless IMO bar one car.. the i20 is rubbish but i guess it fills the spot of bargain bin small car. I liked the iLoad for a van but visability was the worst ive ever seen hahaha

gslrallysport
17th January 2012, 03:11 PM
Yeah, not having windows in the side doors is a pain when trying to cross and sit in the middle of multi lane roads... But I consider it a fun van to drive, with great power, good handling and big 4 wheel disc brakes, and it does exactly what you tell it to do... unlike my MY10 diesel Forester that feels like the steering wheel and pedals are in no way connected to the tarmac :S

The last two I've driven- i45 and ix35 have been disappointing in the way they feel driving.

Good cars, can't fault them but doesn't drive very well (steering/suspension/braking/handling)... not close to the best FWD cars out there, or even the Accord Euro.

Perfect for someone who doesn't really care to drive. I can see a lot of current Camry drivers in future Hyundais.

I wasn;t going to get involved in this, but........

a guy i knew had an excel which was about to be repossessed (yer some awesome people i know)

the weekend before it happened he trashed the car, two feet against the dash to rip his stereo out (literally)

it had who knows how many times it went around in circles backwards, a foot on the dash trying to put it into reverse while doing 80km/hr

was jump over railway lines and who knows what else the other nights i wasnt there.

the day it was repossessed they drove it out of his yard straight onto the transporter.

as much as they tried to kill it, after all the abuse it still went somehow. hyundai should of used it for there advertising

basically from what i have seen with that car (and our reps who now have them) they are getting better and better every model.

i personally wouldnt say no to a white i45 with a black roof

In the metal, this thing looked absolutely unreal!

Nice looking car. I think i might go test drive one when they are out on the market. Hopefully the 2.0ltr turbo will follow in the future if the market demand is there for the car.
Interior looks new aged and not cheap in the photos.

Hmm. Not sure if your aware of this but Hyundai are at the fore front of technology and other manfacturers have been known to use there technology under licence .
Heres another way to look at it.

Japanese Manfacturers took 40 years to get where they are to day
Koreans took 20 years to get where they are today in the market place
Chinese will take about 10-15 years to get where where the Japanese are today .
Scary yes but it shows how things evolve rather quick.

biggest selling brand, most award winning and good warranty, oh and the dealers are ussually pretty good.... i swore id never buy a hyundai but now maybe just maybe

I have a Hyundai iLoad van for work. Overall, the van is ok, but Hyundai's service and warranty departments suck. I went through Maughan Thiem Hyundai, who are to say the least, a bunch of douchebags. The big end bearings failed in my van and Hyundai refused to cover it under warranty, then wanted to slug me $12k for a rebuild. I told them to shove it, went elsewhere and had it rebuilt for $4500. Moral of the story is, cheap Korean cars will always be cheap Korean cars and no matter how much you polish that turd, it will be always be tarnished for the crap that it is.

Saw 2 full trailer loads of the velosters on the gold coast today. They actually look quite cool in the flesh. Don't mind the front grille either. I'd still rather a Honda cr-z

Thank god there is more than 1 car manufacturer world wide ( hyundai owns half of Kia Imo automotive powerhouse ) Looks are subjective and unless you own or have experience driving all the models/brands in this post Why bother bagging

Here are some quick reviews of the Veloster Turbo:
http://www.carsales.com.au/reviews/2012/small-passenger/hyundai/hyundai-veloster-turbo-quick-spin-30108
http://news.drive.com.au/drive/motor-news/driven-hyundai-veloster-turbo-20120504-1y2n9.html

155kW. 265Nm. 0-100km/h in less than 8 seconds (not much slower than a stock Astra G SRi-T), and will be priced at around $35,000 supposedly:
