Hey. Looking at buying a new car in the new year. Veccy is provisionally sold and iv always loved the honda s2000's but never had anything to do with hondas so I don't know much about the build quality etc. Have any of you guys had experience with hondas and in particular the s2k? Any help is appreciated because I'm clueless haha

Honda quality is some of the best of the Japanese. Driven a few S2000's and they are a good handling car and pretty quick with a few mods. With the S2000 you need to watch a few things.

1) gearshift can wear and need to make sure its not "notchy" or hard to change gears
2) rear axles and tyre wear. Especially id the car has been lowered look out for wear on the rear shafts and if the tyres have uneven wear (not just drive wear) then there maybe and issue.
3) The F20C is basically bullet proof. Listen for noisy idle or VTEC engagement. There were some issues with the solinoid that operates the VTEC sometimes stuffing up.

Other than that they are pretty good. My only comment is that when you push them hard they have so much grip that when the rear does let go it pretty sudden and as your going so quick, pretty violent. Other than that, v.nice car!!

you can tune out some of the snappiness with suspension mods.
Great car, sadly too small inside for me to be comfortable in!

Power band is 5000-9000rpm u will find urself revving guts out of it to get anywhere really making fuel expensive and all second hands being thrashed... I do love s2000s but just remember, cruises with ozhonda people = death!

Honda's are f*ing strange.
The engines go backwards for starters! They tend to put at least 1 stupidly designed part into every model. Like, really stupid.
Build quality is usually pretty good, but I think they should just stick to motorbikes.

However, if you gave me an NSX or a S2000, I'd be all over that car like a dog with a plate of sausages. :woohoo1:

If you want a S2K, get a MX5, better value for money in the fun department...

S2000:
- Great motor and gearbox, let down by chassis. Complete opposite of most MX5's, which are deficient in the driveline department, but superb in the chassis.
- 1st Gen had bigger brakes than 2nd Gen. Save you money and get 1st gen!

I've always liked the Honda S2000 and it's stood the test of time with regards to looks, technology and performance, it can still compete with many new high po cars regardless of its age...

Can't go wrong if it's what you really want :)

As mentioned by someone else, you need to thrash the ring off of these things to get them to go as the power is way up in the rev range and you need to keep that tacho needle up there - fun for a while but gets tiresome! (like having a 4 wheeled Honda motorbike!)

(like having a 4 wheeled Honda motorbike!) Or you buy what is known as a vcon (vtech controller) and set that at about 3k rpm... Bring the power in at a much more agreeable level

Doesnt work that way haha if only.. Its still laggy at low revs even on other camshaft. Its when u release the redline to 11k is when it gets fun... But costly

These four would be my pick. They all seem like really clean cars, well looked after and box stock. Always better to start off fresh with tuner cars imo, then you know some ricer hasn't owned it. The first one is just for a bit of fun, but wouldn't the power to weight just be insane......

spent the difference between that and a s2k on mods, and youd have an insane car!

Yeah I could buy a turbo. What you got in mind neeko. The new law came in after I had my p's licence so doesn't affect me. Iv also got my full licence now aswell.

Well even though they are an appealing car they're not as drive-able. I went through the same phase and having driven them all now I would definitely recommend getting a turbo.
Doesn't have to be something wild, just something with a bit of poke :)

I don't think there is a better feeling then putting your foot to the floor and feeling a sudden rush of torque pushing you into your seat. Where as a car that revs high it will never get that feeling. Sure it's accelerating but you have to rev it's guts out to get anywhere.

Plus s2000 and mx5 are more mid life crisis cars IMO.

I'd be looking at a turbo RWD or AWD car that is in ur budget.

I love a properly tuned n/a engine just as much as a turbo one.
The scream at 8000rpm+, and the skill required to drive it fast is appealing to me :)

My old sr20ve powered pulsar was far more exciting to drive than the astra, but the astra is easier to live with.

urrgh, how can you read hot4's?
it was alright when ben ellis was the editor but now it's just... just awful

you can tell the audience when most of the questions are from people under 15/don't have their licence yet: "I'm only 13 and I will have a $20k budget to buy a 10sec street car for my L's. It must have 22" chrome wheels and go tsutsutsu; what blowoff valve would you recommend for under 20 bucks? The car will be running 30psi and have a gt wing. I have drawn a picture, please include it <insert crappy paint drawing like the eclipse in F&F> ps, my mum says it needs to be safe"

no hating, just wondering why you like it

Yeah agreed the p plate Advice and questions section is bullshit but the genuine articles done by hot 4's in the magazine aren't too bad. And a lot of the cars in the mag are more realistic for someone my age rather than street machine where they have $100k vl's and shit. I hate commodores and falcons with a Passion and love 4 cylinder cars with big but realistic power figures. What other magazines cover 4 cylinders apart from hot 4's and fast 4's and rotors

S2k would be on my list of ideal cars - cheap, fast, and very fun (although I've only sat in the passenger seat).

Best gearbox and one of the best NA 4cyl engines ever made IMO.

Its just a faster, manlier, better-looking mx5 which is considered to be the best car in the world by many. Get one.

Autosalon is the only good tuning magazine in my opinion - theres hardly any 'sexspec' cars - mostly JDM/USDM style and they have articles that are relevant.

I hate chrome wheels + candy paint with the fury of a thousand burning suns

benzino
19th December 2011, 12:11 PM
except autosalon doesn't exist anymore :(

and I have to disagree with realism in the cars... I would class hot4's as australia's only show only/trailer queen focused magazine (with the exception of the cars owned by girls or shitter hidden at the back)
most of the cars in hot4's are 100k+ especially when some even have the wheel arches timmed in leather or tv screens on the wheels... hot4's is definitely the opposite of what you described, it is the epitome of show before go or sexspec/show and go

other good magazines include: PI if you like jap cars, fast fours which you have already mentioned, zoom which is a mix of all engines as long as the car is fast.
fast fours is the only one that is kinda similar to autosalon

did anyone ever read Speed? It was really well written, shame it's not around anymore

adam_92
19th December 2011, 01:01 PM
Yeah I agree some of the cars are absolutely ridiculous and show pony and trailer queens but there is cars in there that aren't all show and no go. There has been quite a few small, fast, tuned cars in there lately that look either completely stock/sleeper or have been modified right imo.

I remember the good old days of fast fours... When it would be just be restored rx3s with 20b engines and the "coolest" cars where jza90 supras before fast and furious. And they used to do features on single model cars and all the engine swaps people have done. And they used to have an article about a car being restored from scratch and show the progress each month and u'd read it each month to see whats going on. Compared to now were each issue has a new shitty 350z or r33 with a fancy paint job and boring mods every man and their dog does..

I,also remember the days when fast fours had just that only 4cyl and rotaries in it.

I do like PI they have some good articles also lots of relavent shop ads to read aswell which is good

I really like Kristen appelt's collumn in PI
Alsways interesting to hear a side of things you don't usually

And I guess now they are all owned by EMG you will always read what Donnon has to say

For sleepers you can't really go past zoom, and there are definitely some interesting cars/projects even if they do include commonwhores et. al.
