well christmas is coming up guys and the parents want to buy my sister a laptop. they dont really want to spend over $1000 and i dont really blame them cause all shell do is just listen to music, watch movies and do her school assignments on it. Ive found a toshiba laptop which doesnt look to bad for $800 but ive been out of the computer scene for 3 years now. just want some opinions on whats the best brands now, best value for money etc etc.

this is the one ive seen http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/toshiba/satellite-15-inch-notebook-sku-73705/

so what do you guys think?

I reckon the one you've got there will more than do the job for what she wants it for.

Toshiba's have always been good. I've used and bought a few Dell's the last few years and found them reliable and solid and good value.

If you want extra value for money - look for an Asus - even though I swore off Asus computers after my last one (4 years ago), it looks like they have improved their quality since then so would probably get one again when I'm due to upgrade.

All brands have their flaws, i work in a repair centre & see all different brands with common faults etc...

U get what u pay for in essence.

Im personally a big fan of Lenovo/IBM but they are expensive in comparison.

JB is the place to shop though, i know it's too late now but Hardley Normals had a 50% off sale last weekend, stock clearance me thinks cos they are outdated in a month now...

Just stick with the brands you know, avoid the junk that comes out of china like Konka etc...

Compare the specs & you'll be right...

New range is due out within a week or two. So don't bother looking now as it will be all different again.

As for specs you should be able to get an i5, 4gb, 500gb, 1gb video, 15.6" no worries for $800.

you dont even need to spend $800 bru.

Whats wrong with this one for Eg; http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/asus/14-inch-notebook-sku-70317/

Mid sized so more portable, has everything she needs and $200 less.

lets face it, for music, movies and school work this is more than enough.

Just toss her a dell within that price range. Usually its spec is better than any other brands on same price level in the market.

Even 600 is too much for something that'll break down just after the warranty period is over. I actually bought an acer for 399 last week at WOW sight and sound and it's got everything you might possibly need for day to day work.
