First pics released of most powerful production Astra ever built
· Trailblazing 280PS and 400Nm outputs trounce those of key rivals
· Bespoke chassis with limited slip diff and Brembo brakes
· On sale in 2012

Luton – Hot on the heels of the recently launched GTC, these are the first official pics of the new Astra VXR, which goes on sale next year and is set to become one of the most powerful cars in its class and the fastest production Astra in Vauxhall’s history.

Based on the GTC’s platform and powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct injection engine, the Astra VXR produces 280hp of power and a mighty 400Nm of torque, enough for it to achieve a top speed of 155mph.

But while the Astra VXR is based on the new GTC, it has benefited from a raft of bespoke chassis modifications, transforming it into a focused, high-performance coupe. Setting it apart from all other current Astras is a specially developed mechanical limited slip differential, which works on the front wheels. In conjunction with the GTC’s sophisticated HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut), the LSD provides the Astra VXR with exceptional lateral grip and traction through bends.

Further changes to the chassis include brakes developed by competition supplier, Brembo, and standard fitment of Vauxhall’s fully adaptive FlexRide system. In the Astra VXR, FlexRide features not only a Sport button, but a VXR button, offering drivers the choice of two, more focused stages of damper, throttle and steering control.

Much of the chassis sign-off was done at the Northern Loop (Nordschleife) of the Nürburgring, and was overseen by Le Mans 24-hour race winner, “Smokin’ Jo” Winkelhock. “We have devised a great package that will convince even the most experienced and enthusiastic drivers – and not just on the Nürburgring!” said Winkelhock.

Visual identifiers for the Astra GTC comprise a set of specially sculpted front and rear bumpers, side skirts, an aerodynamic roof spoiler and two exhaust tail pipes in a trapeze shape. Inside, the VXR’s cabin gets bespoke performance seats with embossed logos in the backs, a flat-bottomed VXR steering wheel and upgraded instruments.

The UK is by far the Astra VXR’s biggest market in Europe, so sales interest in the car is set to be strong. More details, including pricing and on-sale dates, will be revealed early next year.

Have to say - if it weren't for the interior pics, I'd be thinking almost concept car. It's not overly aggressive, but looks far more contoured then most cars available..

Like the rear of all things, diffuser/exhausts/LED lights... and the interior. I want those seats.

Have to agree with you on all of those points !
Just thinking out loud here but............Part with the Polo Gti in 2012,replace it with the OPC Astra as my work car.
Part with the Audi and replace it with an OPC Insignia Tourer for the Mrs.

And keep the VXR !:yesnod:

Well, they would be stupid not to bring them out. Then there will be the Nurburger Edition to follow suit.

If i had to get rid of my SRiT, i'll upgrade to the OPC Insignia Estate as an alternative to the astra (of course when money is no object), yeah right!

NICE, as always with me everything about this new AJ model is excellent, but at first glance the fogs could've been left alone as they were in the concept, those look like a straight copy from the new Corsa.

Power numbers are sensational, does anyone have performance numbers ??

If you got one of these you probably wouldn't have to mess around with it mechanically speaking, it sounds like it'll be a top performaing and balanced package as is without having to modify it :)

Agree with the fogs!

Still no performance specs, but some good numbers from this engine in the states where they have been running it for quite some time.

Apparently in the UK these will carry a lifetime guarantee so alot of people probably wont mod them. In saying that though, no idea what this warranty actually covers!

Would a lifetime warranty stop you from doing a bit of tuning ? LOL !

I think the lifetime warranty has been removed as the conditions were so complicated that buyers didn't have any confidence in the warranty being in place for 5+ years..

I would buy one and think it looks great and the only real competitor is the RS250. The big question is, how much does it weigh?

No use having 280hp if it weighs 1500kgs.

I'll take mine in black. :D

The GTC weighs in at about the same as mine. No weights on the VXR/OPC yet though.

"The Opel Astra GTC will be unveiled in the spring at the Geneva Motor Show, the public. In high-performance variant OPC (Opel Performance Center), a 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo petrol engine provides 206 kW / 280 hp and maximum torque of 400 Newton meters for propulsion. The top speed is 250 km / h.

The chassis of the Astra was adjusted to the extra power. Its fine-tuning of the fast Astra OPC received by tradition with the participation of brand ambassador Joachim Winkelhock on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring.

The vehicles with the addition of OPC position in the model name at Opel as sporty pinnacle of the respective series. Current models include the Corsa OPC with 141 kW / 192 hp (154 kW / 210 PS and Nürburgring Edition) and the Insignia OPC, four-and five-door available as a sedan and a sport tourer. Its 2.8-liter V6 turbo gasoline engine with 239 kW / 325 hp is the current most powerful standard engine Opel. As "Unlimited" version of the Insignia OPC reaches a top speed of 270 km / h"

Still like it a lot.

I'll have one in black, but I'd change the chrome grille, new wheels, tint the windows, new exhaust, flash tune and springs (keep the tricky shocks to start with)....Also I'd go for the rear wing they talk about and a new rear diffuser.

Either that or the revised RS265 Megane...But I'd rather stick with the Opel.... :)

I see that they've put in the privacy glass on the rear windows, seems to be a standard thing to do now on most if not all Euro cars these days...

That's down to European rules on tinting. UK regs extends the windscreen tint restriction to the passenger and driver windows as well. 75% light coming through the windscreen is required, and 70% through the side windows. Plus that has to be done at manufacture of the glass, not with aftermarket tinting film. Interestingly (and unlike Australia) windows behind the B pillar aren't covered at all, so you could black them out completely if you wanted to. I'd imagine other European countries are similar.

Sounds about right Bloodnok :)

I've got a new Merc on the way and couldn't delete the privacy glass feature from it :)

Prob is is going to be a hard task with the front windows, match it up and it's too dark and illegal, go legal limit and it's still too light and the 2 different shades look shite, leave it stock and that's even more obvious...will have to think of something :)

I've left Holland a few years ago but when I was still living there, the rules were that if it's a company car, you could (actually, had to..) completely black out the rear windows. That wasn't allowed if it was a privately owned car.
