Looks like they've finally named it what it was always rumoured to be...

There's a new Celica coming...

Still not confirmed though, 4th paragraph

Toyota's FT-86 II Concept -- a preview of the production car that may be badged Celica -- will be on display at the 2011 Australian International Motor Show, and is certain to be a crowd pleaser for numerous reasons, least of which its ahtletic, sharp-edged styling

Yeah, looks pretty good, but the production vehicle will be watered down...

MR2 nameplate would be better IMO :)

MR2 = were all mid engined 2 seaters. Therefore unlikely to be attached to the FT86 car.

Supra was always a 6 cylinder ....

Apparently Toyota Australia has registered "86". So, here it could be called the Toyota 86 (hmmmmmm)
In the USA it would be called a Scion something or other maybe FR-S

150kW 2.0L N/A is always going to struggle with torque with the weight of todays cars.

I like the concept, but think I will be dissapointed with the execution, especially from Toyota- i.e. skinny tyres, soft suspension, highly strung engine. I hope I am wrong.

The Australian Toyota engineers face an uphill battle with Toyota Japan to get our local cars with the suspension/wheels correct. Toyota Japan look at our roads and immediately jack up the springs.

Isn't it going to be a light weight vehicle ?

Besides which forced inducted engine choices are going to be part of the model range :)

JohnBu

Won't be light due to the safetly requirements.

the FWD clio 200 is 1281kg

I suppose that is light compared to most other cars.

Looking forward to the turbo version.

*insert ignorance here*

Will it be FWD or AWD?

The only current FWD powered Subaru?

Will it be FWD or AWD?

I thought they'd said RWD?

The only current FWD powered Subaru?

If it is RWD, Subaru will have a hard job selling it here - they've been pushing AWD so hard it'll be difficult to work an RWD vehicle into the range.

Only 12 months to wait.... some other manufacturer will release something shiney and new before then and everyone will forget it - lol

It will be interesting to see if Toyota can get 150kw out of a flat 4 NA 2L that passes all emission rules. I am thinking it will be more like 130kw.

the least that car would weigh would be 1200kgs because of all the on biard safety features etc. so theoreticly a power to weight ration of 100rwkw to the tonne would be the minimum id expect of a car like this in order to have some fun in it

Shouldn't be too hard to get 150kW..

it's been done, the clio sport 200 is very close, but me thinks the clio sport will be much lighter.

the issue is getting low end torque.

Wraith

Regardless of whatever the power/weight ratio will be in the end ?? at least it'll have good balance and good handling being RWD...

Forced inducted model should be an excellent drving machine :)

The ClioSport weighs 1200kg+

Honda have ditched their 2L Type R engine simply because it couldn't meet future euro emissions.

from what my understanding is the car is meant to represent fun. in that you dont need to spend alot of money to have fun in a car. its a real winner and id love to take one for a test drive (no dealer in there right mind would let a p plater of middle eastern appearance test drive one ;p). as for the hype yeh it gets annoying (to be honest im pretty over the hype) but at the end of the day its pretty much the only real brand new car we can get here in rwd for the money as opposed to commos and falcons or bmws(which cost alot more brand new). me personally for 40k id be trying to get into a wrx or rallirt lancer but each to there own.

I know what you mean mate, im sure it does drive well for what it is. The media rave on like we've never had a 2-door rwd car before (granted not many around $40k), but to me it doesnt seem 'ground-breaking' enough...

Its not ground breaking for what it is, its just there hasnt been any RWD coupes for 30 grand that are this good to drive for decades. Its like a rebirth for this car segment, I'm sure it will inspire Honda, Nissan to follow also.

Will be interesting to see what eventuates with the new Sube BRZ in terms of pricing and performance compared to the Toyota, seeing these 2 vehicles are almost the same thing...

IMO in terms of value for money Toyota will be the pick as they'll always be cheaper to buy than Subaru and they offer better finance options as well if people want to go that way...

Also keep in mind, these current releases are base models, there'll undoubtebly be higher performance and better equipped variants down the track :)

I took one for a drive on Monday at Mt Gravatt. It was base model, but manual. Looks nice in flesh, rear seats are non existant, I dont understand why they even bothered to include them in. Interior was cheapish, but it was base model without the leather etc. Great seating arrangement, butt on floor, legs out - proper sports car with great seats.

Drive wise, it wasnt quicker than AH Turbo, obviously no sudden turbo urge. Made a nice noise and most power at 4-6000rpm. Handling was the best, brake pedal feel was unrivaled, throw it into a corner, full gas and you can feel traction control just kicking in preventing a slide. Was impressed, but not a car I would buy for daily driving. Too little power, have to rev the guts out, and I dont see taking corners at track-like speed to be safe. A 370Z on another hand is perfect IMO - handling, luxury and stellar performance.

An auto BRZ and a manual special edition Megane with even more power than stock. I'd still take the Megane most likely, but this comparison is laughable.

Saw one on the road yesterday here in the CBD (Melb.) look wise, it's very nice...

Will be interesting to see the 'proper' performance variants in the future the current release is just a normal cooking model hardly worth comparing to higher powered top of the line variant performance hot hatches and judging by the initial variants handling prowess the more serious performance variants should be crackers...

Agreed, an STI variant would be pretty cool. Or beat them to it throw in one of these...

Great idea but massively expensive excercise without any peace of mind of warranty etc. I reckon just hang and wait for the higher power variants to come along, will be much easier and more cost effective that way :)

I still reckon wait for the OEM hi po models to arrive, it's just a matter of time...

That way you'll have those power levels OEM or if not with basic tuning instead of going to the expense and trouble of an aftermarket forced induction kit...

Even if the kit is cheaper, that still dosn't weigh up against the loss of warranty, loss of insurance acceptance and running and/or reliability issues which you'll no doubt have with all those kinds of after market forced induction kits...

On the other hand, if your going to wait for a S/H one of these and it's alot cheaper to buy and after the warranty term has expired, it might be an idea to mod it, but you'll still have the insurance issues to deal with...

lonewolf1983
22nd August 2012, 12:52 PM
I dont see them doing a higher power model for quite some time given the demand for the base model... they're already at max capacity pumping them out.
The kit is a good option for those who want power now, and the cost is pretty good for what you get in the package.

Agreed they should have released it from the factory like that though!
