Excellent choice !!!

I've been following the development of this 1 series variant over the last 18 months or so :)

100 only are destined for Australia...

Pity BMW have not included a DCT option on this variant - popular opinion suggests that because it already kicks M3 butt, no need to make it even more emabarassing for big brother :D

Its flared because it's built on the 3 series chassis, not the normal 1 series haha. Thats why the bumpers stick out so far.

My (very rich) mate just ordered one of these too....for his 22nd birthday :(

Actually AFAIK from the 1 series forums, it's the same chassis 'hardware' as fitted to the current E92 M3 not the actual chassis itself :)

That also includes the diff and suspension taken straight from the M3's parts bin...

At around 110k drive away, your 22 year old friend sure has something to smile about :)

To me 110K is a bit rich i think for what it is, especially if you tick a few options and include dealer and govt costs starts getting closer to 130K :sosp:

That being the case puts it right inline with new Pov spec M3 and if buying BMW i know what i would be buying :wink5:

Biased i know, but 130K buys this :swg::

Yawn....... it's a limited edition M car, and is marketed as a race going version of the 135i so the manual is the obvious and logical choice.

Just to clear up, the E87 and E90 chassis is identical so the 1 series and 3 series share the same chassis throughout the range.

So it was easy to put the E92 M3 parts on the 1M cause the chassis is the same, but the bodywork had to be modified to suit!!

Great purchase!!!

I actually walked pass Park Lane BMW yesterday on my way to the Dorchester Hotel and looked in the window. There were some serious cars in there, but there is another dealer down the road that had a grey Spyker, a yellow Lamborghini (with really bad yellow and black interior and rims and best of all a raw carbon Koniegsegg...

Got to love that...

There's a good reason why there is no M1 with a DCT....it's a real sports car for people who can actually drive!

While no one will dispute the technical benefits of the DCT, its boring. Good on BMW for preferencing the manual. We all need to push manufacturers to make manuals otherwise we run the risk of them disappearing altogether (ie VW not offering a manual on the Polo GTi)

150% Totally agree mate

Havn't tried or probably be able to ever try the M3 but I do know it's even better with the calibrations on that iteration of the DCT :)

Love your choice above there Operator, have been researching the new C class coupe lately and apparently it has it all over the current 3 series coupe models, apparently the new C250 CDI coupe is a better driving/handling car than any current 3 series, but the new Beemers arn't too far off maybe they'll step up the ante again... :)

Comparos like that are always going to polarise opinion, although similarily priced they are 2 very different vehicles to suit different buyers...

In terms of typical everyday use and with typical road conditions where most of the driving is a straight line affair, there's always going to be a massive advantage with AWD, launch control and lightning quick shifting modern auto transmissions over RWD or FWD only and a traditional slower gear changing stick shift...

Out on open roads or for people who fang at strips different story especially for those who prefer rowing through gears the old fashioned way, except for drag racing where all serious drag racers are autos, but that's the straight line thingy again...

Each to their own in the end with whatever they choice they prefer :)

my astra is matching or bettering the 2 going by the vid.....

As for the gap, it was and always expected the RS3 to outsprint the 1M with lazy autoshifts and launch control but thats where it ends, anything like a circuit and the 1M shows the RS3 what it is made of, we wont even bother going into the fun factor and drivers experience lol

Quote:
Verdict
BMW shows in an impressive way that they're still able to build true sports cars. The RS3 however is too much like a regular A3 - and not a sports car. The Focus RS 500 almost seems like a street-legal rallye car.

On the BMW 1M
Munich does more than just fitting a big engine as they've built a dedicated sports car. The 1M is quick, sharp, and our winner.

On the Audi RS 3
If you're looking far a very fast small car for every day use or to show off the Audi is for you. The RS3 shows an amazing grip level, but the tires can't keep up long enough on a track.

On the Focus RS 500
The Focus RS500 is better than 'also ran' - it's just the best FWD sports car currently on offer. The layout doesn't allow more than third place though.

On Audi RS3's brakes and tires wear
The Audi's tires show heavy wear and the initially good brakes begin to fade after just one lap on the track [Contidrom Germany]. The culprit is found easily: Its front-biased AWD, the e-diff using the front brakes to simulate a limited slip differential and the car's weight [200kg more over the front axle compared to 1M]. The RS3 isn't a car for the race track.

http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp260/wreckx2008/AB_1M_RS3_RS500.jpg

Autobild has just published a comparison test between the 1M and the Porsche Cayman R equipped with 7-speed PDK. We're happy to share that the 1M won this comparison (besting the Cayman R by 1 point). The 1M coupe performs only slightly worse than the Cayman R, yet it offers better overall comfort and low-end power. All this for roughly EUR 25k less!

1M coupe performance data:
0-62mph: 4.8s [Porsche 4.6s]
0-124mph: 17.8s [Porsche 16.4s]
ContidromTrack time: 1:35.76 [Porsche 1:34.21]

Here are some select quotes from the Autobild comparison:

""M" as in man toy - the 1M's appearance alone seems to confirm that. Understated is something else. Front aprons in Darth Vader style, quad-exhaust and diffuser at the rear, and the massive fender flares catch the eye."

"The 3-litre biturbo inline 6 and its deep bass takes on the Cayman R"

"Unlike the Porsche, the 1M offers plenty of power throughout the whole engine speed range. It outperforms pretty much any Cayman - but not the Cayman R. The weight difference of 128kg (1M: 1536kg - Cayman R: 1408kg) can't be denied, thus the Cayman R is able to walk away easily. The same applies when it comes to cornering, despite the effective LSD in the 1M. The BMW shows more roll and has too much weight over the front axle (52% - Cayman R: 44%)."

Not many here getting out and about by dealers as demos, the allocation of 450 is being sucked up pretty quick so not many dealers are getting demos and anything they have customers are buying straight off them.

Our dealership ordered one demo and is was bought the same day it arrived by someone walking in offering them cash lol

BMW UK have just done a M experience at Goodwood circuit so my wife spent Sun morning zooming around in a few 1M's plus a couple of M3's and Z4's
she is now hanging out even more to take delivery of her own and still she walked away form the other cars with semi autos saying they are boring in comparison to a manual.....

Last word on twitter by the BMW UK Marketing manager was that most of the last remaining have now been ordered after the Top Gear episode........Shows the clout that program actually has!

Wraith
6th July 2011, 07:17 AM
AFAIK there won't be any demos here either, which is fair enough since only 200 have now been allocated Australia wide...

It's definitely the sort of car you either have to have or don't want at all, so I'm sure interested people here will buy it regardless of whether they test drive it first or not :)

Also AFAIK they're saying that the original allotment of 100 vehicles presold here in Aust. (an individual actually purchased 2) so that's why they're now offering another 100...

Kinda reminds me of a similar thing happening with the last model Monaros here, the way some people purchased more than one to put them away and hoping for rising values in the future...

I'm guessing that there will be probably some left over from the second allotment of 100, but they'll all eventually sell :)

The new model 1 series has arrived (hatch variant) and looks pretty good IMO, will be interesting to see what the new 1 series coupe will look like and there'll be a sedan as well :)

Production of the 1M stops end of Dec with the last customer orders being delivered Jan

In the UK I have heard if the 450 were not pre ordered then that is it, unless dealerships kit up and pre order as a demo and sell on.

Rarerity is a good thing when it comes to cars of some notoriety, so there's a good chance that in the distant future the value of these first model 1M's will be substancial...

That's alot of pics! Did you even get a chance to go in one?

Gotta love how Tiff is the only one without a helmet, even when he's driving!

I don't doubt it Ain, there's no mistaking seeing something like that :)

Maybe or could be from what you say above...

I rocked up to 2 seperate BMW dealers over the weekend and there were no 1M's to be seen there, I didn't ask them but maybe some people have started taking delivery by now ??

I may go check over on the 1 series forums :)

yeah there is a few now released in Aus

the above is a nice one with the black alloys but we have decided we are going to try a dark smoked chrome (already running black on the astra) matched with the gloss black kidney grills, glass black side indicators and the carbon boot spoiler

side indicators finished in gloss black

A great video. But why do they think music is necessary when one has the aural sound of the car to enjoy.

Yeah, there's only a short part mid vid without that crappy music in the background LOL, should've been like that the whole way through so we can get a good listening of the car, was watching it here at work and other people in the office background thought I was watching a porn clip or something :D

Good vid o/a though for the 1M :)
