hey guys this morning when i was about to come home from work. i was shocked to find my mums 2008 lancer vrx would not start. the car is less than three years old and hus done just under 40 000kms. so i ring nrma and they come. they guy jump starts the car and tells me the battery is dead and needs replacing. now from all my past experiences i usually get 5 years even more from a battery so whats the deal. also batteries arent covered under new car warranty so im gonna have to cough up for a new battery. but i just want to know is this unusual?

i got exactly 5 years on my oem battery.
different brands will last different times. its just one of those things. Why do you think some manufactures only put a 1,2 or 3 year warranty on them.

Also more batteries fail in winter than any other time of the year.

haha poita, you sure its the battery or the car? nah just playing i got a power crank one off the mechanic, comes with a 2 year warranty. his advice was in the morning to start the car with no accessories on.

ps it was such a mission to change the battery, had to take apart the intake to get to it and it had these weird ass plastic screws holding it in place. i much prefer the torx screws our astras have tbh. ah well mums all happy now.

Short trips generally kills batteries early.

Having said that, some japanese batteries lasts a long long time.

+1

Metry long gone are the days of car batteries lasting 5 or more years...

In some cases you may get that kind of lifespan on new cars these days, but it's not a typical situation.

You can buy aftermarket batteries which give a 5 year warranty, but they cost twice as much ! not worth it IMO.

The corsa c that I had in oz had the original opel battery and that was an 04/05 and the veccy still has its original battery. Never had any problems... touch wood.

The standard Opel Battery lasted 7 years in the Veccy. Would have kept going had the contact not been sheared off by the mechanic...

The exxide batteries...has any1 used them till they died.
How much do you have to worry about the brand of batteries when it comes to quality?
Are they like tires?

It appears most batteries are made in the same place, but in different colours from what I can see..

I personally think the warranty period is a good indication of the quality of the battery.. 1 year ok, 2 years good, 3 years very good...

I replaced mine last week too. Also one of the cells went. NRMA came out and told me that the battery was too small for the car... standard... not including all audio shit hooked up. Ol well, least I've got a bigger better one now.
