Police doubt alcohol check
There are doubts about the reliability of equipment used by the police for alcohol testing.

Breathalyser device
The Dutch Forensic Intstituut has started an investigation, reports the AD (newspaper). Drivers are checked first by blowing on the "tube". Thereafter they may be sent to the police station for a second breath test on a different device.

Reliable
It was thought that the second test was reliable. But according to the court in Breda there are errors in the computer software of the device. That may indicate a higher percentage score .

30,000 Dutch
Every year more than 30,000 Dutch undergo the test. The NFI study is unique in the Public Prosecutor in the Netherlands. The prosecution said keep faith in the breath analysis devices, until the contrary is proved. "They have been extensively reviewed, but we follow this review course."

Action
The reason for this study was a trial in Breda. A 47-year-old woman had a test last year after being told she consumed a "near-lethal" amount of alcohol. According to police, they didn't smell any alcohol. The lawyer of the woman produced the results of American research on the alcohol test. It showed that there may be errors in the software of the device.
