View Full Version : Recommend me some wheels!

Mods sorry if this is wrong section, but I was hoping to get maximum input. Feel free to move it.

Anyways, I love my current wheels (stock VXR burg ones), but they have hideous gutter rash and are impossible to clean! I was really disappointed about the gutter rash when I bought the car, as it is really extensive (I would say 80-100g of metal is missing from the front right wheel), and is present on all wheels. Seriously, how do you rash the back left wheel?

I thought I could get it repaired ok, but it is now looking like $200 per wheel for a guy to come and do it. So I am asking peoples opinions on a good set of lightweight wheels for $1200 or UNDER! I am a poor uni student, so $1200 is the absolute limit. It is because of this that I am looking at Rota's. I have had them on cars in the past, and they are very well priced for what you get - a good looking, relatively-light wheel.

Thinking something along the lines of this:
http://www.oakos.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/ROTT3.jpg

or

http://www.1010tires.com/images/wheels/super/enkei_EKM3_Gun_lg_super.jpg

or

http://jasonborowiec.com/specb/rota/18x8.5%20Rota%20DPT%20-%20Hyper%20Black%20(5x100x114.3-e48-73hcb)_2.jpg

All are around $950 on ebay (having trouble finding the right offset... 5x110 and offset 43?)

Can anyone give me any other ideas? I hate chrome wheels with a passion - they must be a dark colour and 18". Love the wheels that nurb608 has on track days - so I am essentially trying to emulate that look.

Enough ranting from me! please post your ideas.

As Gav (cnblu) has said, the TD 1.2's are about $1200 landed from courtenay Sports or Deamon Tweaks UK in the 18's. For the darker colour you have the gloass black as in the pic above or the anthracite which are the ones i have.

I have a set of 20" rims Which I'm happy to sell which were specifically prepared to be Opel PCD and offset friendly...they were fitted only for a short time to my turbo vert, seeing the AH has more room to play with the ET and tyre sizes compared to the TS model they should fit up nicely, ie. if your interested in going to 20's...the rim is a 10 spoke combination of diamond cut machine finish with gloss black spokes as well...

If so let me know and I'll give you more details :)

Ditto. My TDs are in High Power Silver. Courtenay Sports are good as they will supply the TDs with the correct centre bore so spigot rings aren't required.

Seeing as you have a very rare Nurburgring edition (one of only 20 bought into Aus) I would keep it original and not get non-factory rims. So if I were you I'd repair or replace the significantly damaged rim and keep it factory don't spoil it!

That's a very good point and it's always a good move to keep your stock wheels whichever way you decide go, for when you eventually sell the car or just want to return it to stock look again...

You could then always have multiple sets of wheels (if you have the space and the budget) to give your pride and joy a different look every so often :)

Or grab something similar like oz racing ultraleggera to replace your damaged stocks.. but in the long run you could fix and spray 2 of ur stock wheels at same price as 1 oz haha

Yeah I was planning on keeping the stock wheels for meets etc, but would just like a second set for ease of cleaning/every day stuff

Wheels are a personal choice. One of the easiest ways to style the car to your tastes.
Personally I love multi spoke wheels on the astras.
Also if your willing to go 2nd hand you could probably pick up some oz racing or bbs rims from the uk in your price range.

guy can you show me pics of an H with multi's? I love multi's but I dont know how they would look on an astra.

+1 on fixing the stockies. a car as rare as this in australia needs to be kept looking original. rory has done heaps of engine work but from the outside it still looks stock.

2 dead in australia.. as far as we know of

what about some 5spokes?? PDW Novas or XHP Jet Blacks. theyre cheap but not lightweight.

Yeh rory thats what i was saying itd be cheaper to redo the 2 stock wheels to the price of 1 oz (approx $600 each for 18")

Have a look at www.tirerack.com and search Saturn Astra XP or Saturn Sky... some really cheap wheels on there Enkei RAZRs FTW!

Just so you guys know, I would definitely be keeping the stock ones! I just want some black ones to use every day to keep clean. I dont know if I like the chequered flag vinyl, but I will be keeping it just for the fact that it makes it a burg. Guy i do quite like the ones you posted, although i'd be looking for 18's, not 20's!

that ofset sounds good. with the right offset you can fit massive wheels under a car. ive got 19x8s under my astra g and they scrub in the back but thats because my shocks are no good. when my shcoks were good it would only scrape when i had over 100kgs in the back

Nurb608

I run an offset of 40 on mine.

Could always dead vinyl it and make Urs the only arctic edition in aus minus the panoramic windscreen :p

Haha no offence but I think anything over 18" looks pretty ridiculous on a hatchback....In fact I think anything over 19" on any car is stupid full stop. But each to their own, as long as you enjoy your car!

That's just showing off....

what would the brake disc size have to be to not be able to fit 18s?

Um, I think you can fit 356's underneath. What ever Gav has on his is pretty much the max but it depends on the caliper design.

JohnBu

Big enough for a little Astra :D

CNBLU
13th May 2011, 09:09 PM
Yep 356mm would be at the max. Only about 3-4mm gap from the calipers to the rim :D

It might be worth having a chat with Gary at Gazzas Wheels World in Benalla VIC....he is a great guy, very helpful, knows his shit on wheels and really good price and service. I bought my enkei's off him as a recommendation of a mate here who has delt with him and he was brilliant. I had loads of issues getting anyone over here and other wheel places in the east to find wheels with suitable PCD and offset to suit my veccy. I made one phone call to him, I told him the sort of wheel I was after and he emailed me about 6 options the next day.

Even including freight I got my Enkei's cheaper than heavier and lesser quality brand wheels that other shops were trying to sell me.

You have to understand though that most people here really like astras,
yes they are not some crazy expensive supercar but we love em.
This is a site for enthusiasts, we love these cars as they are and with complementary mods.
What you did is remove everything that essentially makes your car a nurb.

Its more the fact you paid more for a vehicle, (Well daddy did) and then turned it into a vehicle that not only costs less, but also has a little less meaning.
Not to mention calling anyone with 19" rims ridiculous is quite frankly, idiotic.
