yeah it was pretty crazy stuff. did you see when they went inside the car to show you the damage everything was burned and melted to bits. even the rollcage had warped and kinked then they showed the onboard footage from both cars. it would have been pretty terrifying to be in the car engulfed in flames

faaaaar out! Yeah he realy had nowhere to go. I wonder if they could place the fuel cell any better? guess not

@fteve: they were talking about it on the coverage, they said that apparently the new models will have the fuel cells in front of the rear axel and as a result itl be less likely to be affected by that sort of impact..

if i was a driver though i would rather the fuel cell to be in the boot than in the back seat

im with poita on this. but moving the fuel tank to infront of the axle would make it harder to receive any damage. but wouldn't moving the fuel tank throw the cars balance off a bit?

I was there today at the end of pit straight.
All I saw was flames above all the other cars.
Pretty horrific impact.

it was nuts...

can put some hilarious commentary over the top but for the red car that swerved ahah "so long sucker!" was friggen last minute dodge on his part

just lucky this happened at the back of the pack not the front

On the Channel 7 coverage, Skaife remarked that in the "Future Car" the fuel cell would be relocated more forward. With the fuel cell more forward and low in the car, it may improve handling as the weight of the fuel will not be hanging out near the rear bumper.

Would more forward have helped with that though ?
Square on,150 km/h and an impact at 37g.
Given the damage to the chassis the fuel cell would probably have ruptured anyway.

Motorsport will always have it`s freaky accidents.

Just to clarify, when it says the fuel tank is after the rear axle, its literally just after it, still alot of space from the tank to the rear bumper.

By moving it to before the rear axle, it will be towards the centre of the car but the whole 'future car' design will no longer be based on a road going chassis so the weight balance can be changed with the redesign of other parts of the car.

Also, had the fuel tank been in front of the rear axle yesterday, doubt it would have burst because the rear axle didn't get pushed forward at all from the impact.

I guess The further forwards and lower it is in the car reduces chance of being hit as in case of rear ending. the colliding car will "climb" the stationary car pending on speed and go over the tank with out peircing. Also greater crumple zone.

Still think 36g with say 50l of fuel. So therefor over 1.8tonnes of weight of fuel pushing against a rubber skin tank would still burst

But the rear axle would have to push forward onto the tank in order for it to burst, which in yesterdays case the rear end didn't get pushed forward enough so had there been a tank there, it wouldn't have ruptured it.

Correct you are.
