Hey all,

Recently got Optus wireless at my place, and have been questioning the speed of the internet.

Went to a mates place just then who has the same wireless from Optus but his speed alot higher than mine...

As an example, we downloaded the same show at the same time, his took 10 minutes, mine took an hour.

The only noteable difference is that ive got the Optus supplied modem and hes got some Belkin unit, would that be the difference or is there something else i should look at??

He looked at the settings and said theyre the same as his, so the settings aren't an issue.

Or could it also be related to distance from the modem to the laptop??

Its all to do with how far away you are from the closest exchange, I have ADSL2+ and I download at 150kbps because I live in the deep jungle of Uppercomebacktowest..

there are a lot of variables to testing speed:

- how far is he from the exchange
- are u both on the same plan?
- are both phone lines in perfect working order?

i know its not the network card (pc to modem) because ive worked on both your computers and they can handle high speeds locally without any issues

that being said... could u do me a favour... tell me what plan u are on, and go to http://www.speedtest.net and post the result?

can you log into the modem steve and tell me your speeds

for example i get

Data Rate (kbps) Down - 4737 Up - 903

Also close down all your explorer windows except for one and jump on www.speedtest.net

wow
thats epic slow mate

call optusnet support. they can do a more detailed test on your line and determine the issue... because the standard spec (i think, todd can confirm) is 1.5mbps at the lowest

what modem did they supply you with?

first thing i did was ditch the supplied modem, they restrict the software on them

you can always flash them with generic firmware also to get rid of the shit

Some Netgear one, looks very small compared to my mates Belkin one (and looks cooler with the blue lights lol)

Ill call Optus when i get a chance, but i think ill ditch the modem also, in mechanic terms i got the 2.2 and the Belkin is the Turbo

bahahaha, pretty much
just have the supplied modem handy when you call, because 9 times out of 10 they go for the easy blame, being a non supplied modem

heres how a typical tech support call will go:

- have u restarted your computer
- are u using a non supplied modem
- have u restarted the modem
- have u made sure the modem was the only one plugged in during the test

a tech support call for me would be like you arguing with a wreckers about an N15 pulsar versus a 2.2 astra

then i expect the call to be short, and end with alot of swearing.......

all i have is the supplied modem, nothing else.

comps been restarted 100 times.

Modems been reset heaps too cause my laptop used to disconnect every 20 minutes (been ok for a couple of weeks though)

bottom right hand corner click on the network icon (5 bars small to bigger)

then click open network and sharing centre

under view your active networks it will have your network.

jsut to the right a little it will have connections.

and have your network name in blue

click on that and a new window will open

it will have connections about 6th one down is speed, will be in mbps

whats that saying?

54mbps, which coincidentally is what the modem is rated to

poita
19th March 2011, 07:10 PM
that wont be helping tbh

the newer ones run much quicker speeds over wifi

mine connects at 150mb, with a better network card 300mb is achievable

i would consider upgrading the modem anyway

A 54mbps wireless adaptor will still support 6.75 Megabytes per second transfer speed.
This will not effect the speed of the internet connection whatsoever.

As far as your wireless internet speed.

What plan are you on? i.e - what speed do you pay for?

OMG once again ppl don't read the thread correctly...didn't the OP say it was optus WIRELESS...meaning he isn't connected to an exchange...its running via something like a 3g network...

poita

Indeed he did.

He also says his mate has the same plan but uses a belkin unit.

As far as I was aware belkin don't make a 3G modem router

so instead of flaming maybe post a suggestion for the issue you have noticed?

steve, do you have a menu you can open for the modem? if so, does it show reception anywhere? (this answers what type of connection you have)

flaming there is no flaming going on..i'm merly pointing out that he had a 3g connection not a wired one...shesh...as for a 3g belkin moden your right they don't. Any way back on topic...I too had problems with speed over distance with my dsl connection...i found using a modem like a Billion 7800N got rid of that problem mainly due to the chipset being used. The chipset is a Broadcom chipset its meant to increase speed and line stablity so ive herd
