View Full Version : Selling the Car. Plus 5 Grand in Savings. Ideas?

ChrisMaz

As above.

The plan is to fix the car, scrapes mostly.... FML.

And tune up the dog engine, then sell the car in about 6 months.

Would aim to sell it for $11,000, and still have $5,000 in savings. ($16,000 all up, AT MOST)

I'm after suggestions for cars. Something reliable and cheap to service....

No Excels, Rolla's or Protons.

Best to start off with what YOU want and what you'll be using it for.

Bigger/smaller
Faster than the vectra
Sticking with euros or would you consider jap/aus cars etc

I can suggest an '02 vx ss for 15k, but you might not like that, so slap on a bit more info and well go from there!

When you say that do you mean at a main agent (dealer?) or just overall?

ok going off what i think i know about your car choices chris..

no commodore or falcon, has to be manual, reasonably powerful or atleast more than your mates commodores, good to look at, comfy interior, size not overly matters within reason, preferably not a boat :p and beyond MY00

Ok should have been way more specific.

As brenton said. No Falcodores.

I'm not fussed if its Euro or Jap.

Manual would be a MAJOR plus.

Basically. I just don't know what I want.

The cars I WANT are out of my price range. Megane, XR5, Mazda 3 MPS etc.
I want something that is basically, as comfortable and stocked as the Vectra, for Maybe just a little bit more. I must admit the Vectra is very good value for what it is.

Servicing wise would most likely NOT be done at a dealer. After having gone through Holden servicing. I don't really trust dealer servicing, unless its under warranty.

I'm basically selling the car because I'm just sick of the overall cost of decent servicing, cost of basic mods and the lack of Australian mechanics basic knowledge of the car. If I was the kind of person that could service A car myself, it'd be excellent, but i'm mechanically inept at the most basic things so the car really isn't for me.

The plans to fix it up, 100%. Respray on the bad areas (Front bar, bonnet and door strips), interior passenger seat repaired, gearbox / clutch fixed, cosmetic mods sprayed and installed, and sell it. Hopefully to someone who will appreciate it.

for $15k you have a massive amount of choice mate. as said already perhaps it's better to decide what type of car you want first.

if you want something Vectra-sized without the problems, you can look at a 380 or an Aurion...they're comparable in speed, are easier to work on, and usually less things go wrong on them.

If you're after an XR5/MPS style car in your price range that's manual, euro, modern, cheaper than a vectra to modify, similarly kitted out and faster....

+1.

380 GT. I just can't think of anything else out there that offers much better bang for your buck (acceleration, braking, handling), plus comfort, practicality, reliability, and low servicing costs (and even running costs after converting to dual fuel: petrol or LPG) to boot. Even insurance premiums are not that scary. Plus, even if you buy the later models, you should still get some change from $16K to either save up, or to do it up! Hugely underrated car:
http://www.productreview.com.au/p/mitsubishi-380-2005-present.html

EDIT: Just realised you prefer a manual. In that case, a Series 2 VR-X or later then, so you can possibly get leather trim as well.

3 sp25 maybe?

I've just bought one of these...definitely excellent choice as a 'normal' no fuss, no worries and very practical daily driver :)

But don't think the price suits the above, unless you find one S/H or go for a Neo or previous model (BK) SP23 ??

Not to go off topic, all VAG's are expensive to service from dealerships unless you go your own way and use other garages or contacts and they all still seem to have querks and unreliabilty issues...

If worry free/reliable and lower cost motoring is a desired requirement, you can't go wrong with a Japanese choice, it's one of the main reasons I decided to buy a Jap vehicle as my new daily drive...

Keep the more troublesome and expensive to run Euros as weekenders :D

I nearly bought a 380 new when they were jobbing them out at the end of the run. They were going for 17K (but it was lucky dip as far as options - you got what turned up). In the end I decided not to - I really wanted a manual and a hatch, so I bought the Vectra...

im not interested in starting a this brand versus that brand war on servicing and general running costs etc blah blah blah

Chris, go out and drive some of the above mentioned cars, ask questions about parts and servicing (and yes, dealer servicing will always be a rip off), and make your own decision from there.

Im sure people out there told you a vectra was a crap car to buy (as i got the same crap when i bought a calibra), but you still bought it and enjoyed it just the same

Mk4 GTI... boring drive. Expensive for what you get. I see it as the more expensive poor man's Astra Sri Turbo.

For $15k you can get a Megane 225, just maybe not the Cup version, or a Clio Sport 182 Cup.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Essentially this thread was just to get some ideas, if i'd missed any in the price range etc.

One car I can 100% write off is the 380. Driven one in adelaide for a week. Sure it has decent go. But its got so much throttle lag it isn't funny. Would rather a falcodore. Plus its made like a plastic chinese toy.

Yeah John - hot off the heels of buying 3 other new cars over the last 18 months for other family members (Honda City, Toyota Yaris, Toyota Corolla) final choice as my new daily driver for the next 3-5 years was a new Mazda 3 SP25 sedan with the lot - will pick it up in a couple of weeks :)

Decided on a fairly normal and fairly practicle choice of car in the end, rather than anything too fancy or that I'd want to constantly spend money on or play around with as a daily driver, I'll leave that to my dedicated weekenders, the only mod I'm thinking of is a set of Eibachs that's it :)

I'm now in the market for a nice and proper sports coupe to complement my vert, I'll be checking out the new Merc C Class when they arrive and I've still got a passion for the Audi TTS although I'm much more keener for the TT-RS, recently test drove one and all I can say is WOW it totally blew me away to drive and totally blows me to look at LOL... :)

Yeah, as said 4 over the last 18 months :) although only one is mine...and a total of 7 over the last 10 years so collapse all you like guys :p LOL

The Mazda SP series (including the previous SP23) was always a close 2nd behind anything else, the 1st choices were always the more performance/sport orientated variety and as said I decided against that in the end...

If it was to be my one and only car, then yes it would not have been a Mazda 3 :)

JohnBu

The MPS3 doesn't come in Automatic.

Anyway Ange, why not just get a decent car like a Golf R or RS250 and drive it everyday, rather put up with a SP25 most of the time and drive a great car such as an Audi TT-RS only once a week.

The TT-RS will age and depreciate whether you use it or not.

Correct John in answering Guys' question :) Auto or twin clutch trans is a must have 'for me' as a daily drive requirement...

I can/could've bought myself any of those other choices mentioned, but as said I stuck to my decision 'to not' buy anything that I'd eventually muck about with and modify alot for a daily driver - which all forced inducted hi-po choices would've had me doing...

I see what you mean by getting a more decent ride for everyday, but again as said before I kind of like the idea of having a more special car or cars for weekends/weeknights only, that makes the whole experience of driving it more fun all of the time !

If you drive it everyday, you end up getting used to it and it dosn't feel that special anymore, that was the experience I had when I owned my previous HSV and my daily drive was a Corolla and I like it that way, the HSV was always a blst to look forward to driving and I never tired of it, I would've if it were a daily drive though, age and depreciation have never been issues which affect me for weekender car choices, if that were the case all of us would be driving around in S/H hacks :)

My choice for a daily driver however did take into account some measure of resale and depreciation aspects, hence another big tick for the Mazda 3, easy to re-sell and good depreciation considering the purchase price :)

At the end of the day, I can afford to do it and want it that way and can only repeat if I was a 'one car' only person then yes it would be a far better car, most probably something like a 335i or M3 or RS4 as I'd have to consider a certain amount of practicality which a 2 seater coupe simply dosn't have...

I'm really looking forward to the new crop of hi-po exotics coming in over the next couple of years - Audi Quattro Coupe/R4 and affore mentioned C Class Merc Coupe.....yummie, stay tuned one of these will eventually end up in my already over crowded garages :D
