has anyone flipped the spare wheel in an astra ts upside down, and placed a sub with a fake floor in it, so when you open the boot, all you see is boot space and the sub and amp under the floor with like a grill or something on top of it?

Going to on tuesday, play around with this idea - might be a great idea, or not

yeah seen it attempted.
its not that great. theres really not enough room without removing the spare wheel.
ill find you some pics...

here you go:

Oh well, I beat percy at least :p

I greatly prefer them to the stock lights, but now that it's been discovered that you can get the factory E-marked non-AFL projector lights for cheap, that'd be the go :). Especially as they have the gloss black backing.. the AFL on the dynabeams is very nice around twisty roads at night though. I should put up a vid someday.

I still have to neaten up the wires for the crossovers, far longer then are needed.

if thinking of making the rim of ur spare the "speaker box" it wont work and will sound pretty rubbish.. not to mention pending on size of your magnet on your sub having it that close to a metal wheel may damage your speaker..

was thinking of doing that, 17inch rim, with a 10 or 12 inch sub in closed a box which will sit inside the rim - theirs plenty of room to do it about 3cm from the the bottom, with about 5inchs around the rim to spare and im going to be raising the floor of the astra by about 3cm so i can the fit amp under the floor as well - it'll look great - just worried about the sound - oh i have a shit old sub and amp that was in my bro's car when he got his, but since he had a better set up in his old car - i scored it - so im not worried about destroying a sub at the moment

remember that for most subs you want a box volume of around a cubic foot.
now i reckon the inside diameter of a 17" wheel is about 15 inches... and say 6" depth...
so by my maths that comes to 14,821 cubic cm
which is the equivalent of 0.52 cubic feet

so what happens if its ported?

so what happens if its ported?

i dont know mate.
tbh ive never dealt with ported boxes because they are really hard to do well, and are more limitted in frequency range...

Ported can sound good but will need much bigger box, at least 1cu ft for a 10inch.

You can get prob get 1.5cu ft if you fiberglass the spare wheel well, of course will a flat 18mm mdf baffle on top.

ported = you need a bigger box..

sealed is the smallest option other than no box :P

never thought of that, just a board with a ring or something to hold it in place - going to have some fun doing this project once i have the time to do so, doing 50hrs a week at work for the next 5 weeks or so

you maybe best to use a hometheater sub if you choose not to use a box

if you are short on space you should look at the soundstream stealth sub, 2inch deep!!!!!
only 200watt but its a screamer...

im getting one in their box and mounting it under the parcel tray

looking at doing something similar to this too a sub like that would be perfect due to limited space any one have or heard one?
this is another option i suppose

Please, for the love of god do NOT install a sub free air (no box) in a car, especially in a hatch back.

Low frequency speakers need a box

getting one or got one??

cause honestly they are a peice of shit!! Rockford Punch P3 is much better....

+1 to not not having a box..

Look at the Adire Audio Subs, there not shallow but pack a massive punch (there home theater ones) Shiva X is what alex has and Tempest X is what i was thinking of getting if i did a false floor setup

arent home theatre subs meant to run at 8 ohm tho?

some also run at 4 or 6 ohm.

Most amps don't double power when running 2 compared 4 ohm anyway (2 channel amp running a 4ohm sub, each channel is runnng at 2ohm).

A bigger issue of running home subs is the typically require a much bigger box compared to sub designed for a car.
