View Full Version : New Astra VX-R Racer at Racer Industries

Racer Industries
2nd December 2010, 01:05 AM
Hi All

Thought I would post some pics of our new VX-R racecar.

We have built this from a genuine VX-R and have just shipped it to Dubai to race in a 24hr touringcar race in January.

The mods include engine work by Cragsted performance, Forged Pistons, H-Beam Rods, Ballance shaft deletion.

Garret GT28 Turbo upgrade inluding cast manifold. Light weight flywheel and SACHS clutch. CES fitted a stainless 3" system with twin dump pipe.

MCA adjustable dampers and Team Dynamics rims with 235 40 18 Dunlop slicks. We have fitted the whiteline rear adjustable bar also.

Transmission is standard but we have added a Quaife ATB.

Power ended up at 365 BHP , and we have stripped everything out to get the weight down to 1100kg.

We have a custom MOTEC system including Engine management with Drive By Wire, traction control, boost control (driver adjustable) and have retained the factory ABS and Electronic power steering.

The car is great to drive and very fast.

The race is in early January so we are looking forward to see how it goe.

If anyone is intersted I do have all the standard VXR parts that we pulled of (seats trim etc)

Cheers

Ryan

Welcome to the site!

One question to start with, just out of curiosity, how come you had to delete the balance shaft if it was an original vxr? The Z20LEH doesn't have one to begin with.

Nice choice on the rims though ;) Can't wait to see how it goes.

Hi

Thanks for the post.

It has 365 at the flywheel. would be more if I ran the boost up, but for a 24hr race 365 is OK. It has a GT38RS (disco potatoe)

We put it under the bonnet to save weight. The Factory ECU is normally under the bonnet on most cars anyway

Hey Ryan,

What are you running off the ECU? Just the motor or everything including the windows etc?

Racer Industries

Hi Thanks for the post. We run the LER motor, cause they are easy to get. In australia we have been racing as and SRiT for a few years with another car.

We also add the under piston cooling

Cheers

We use the ECU for the Engine only. We have a motec Power Distribution Module and the SDL 3 Dash to control the rest.
In the SRi T, we still run the factory ECU in piggybak so it can work the other modules on the car , but in this car we control the Power steering, alternator and ABS directly from the motec.
The car does not have moveable windows

We are actually the agent for the wheels (Team Dynamics) We can get them for Astra in 17 x 7.5 and 18x8. I believe 19 is also available, but I have never got any. This car runs the 18x8, but the Sri T we race uses the 17x7.5, we found it a little quicker with the smaller tyres

If you are adding a Motec, we could help you out a little. We used Motec cause the DBW throttle was the best. I interfaced it with the Factory ABS to get wheel speed info so we also have traction and launch control

I was going to ask about the rims?? Any prices on the 17's??

Also, what Garrett are you running?? GT2871R or GT2860RS etc??

I looked at the Motec but went with a Vipec V88 instead...Same reasons, ran the DBW throttle and picked up the stock wheel speeds too...The Vipec was a personal chice and the engine builder I use loves them... :)

The steering wheel was cut up to Manufacture the Boss to ad the OMP racing Unit, so it is gone. The seats and rest of the trim are all fine. Car only had 3000 k's on it when I got it.
You can PM me if you are interested

Where abouts are you guys? Interested in interfacing the M84 running in parellel with the factory ecu to keep all functions but able to tune the motor for club events.

Opps, I missed this post... :) OK I'm dumb...Sorry Ryan..My bad...

Mines running a GT2860RS too, but I added a Tial turbine housing (& external watsegate) and billett compressor wheel...I have a GT2871R but to much lag for a circuit car...I'm not doing 24hrs, but thinking about IPRA and the restrictor make anything bigger than a GT2860 useless anyway!! :(

I'll get back to you on the wheels....But very interested...

We are on the gold coast

Interfacing an M84 is possible. Basically we take all the inputs in tandem so the factory ECU still thinks it is running the engine. We control the DBW, Injectors and Coils. It worked pretty seamlessly in the SRi-T, although that was with the M800, but I am sure M84 would be OK

You can PM me here for contact or www.racerindustries.com

Yeah, the M84 is pretty much the same with a few less data logging capabilities so should be the same.

Don't suppose you visit Melbourne? lol :D

Good luck with the racing as we all support anyone running our type of cars ;)

And anything you can offer the forum would be greatly appreciated, just have a chat to poita to work out some details if you want as we would be greatfull for any assistance anyone can offer :D

Cool, would be good to see some shots of yours. I have thought of IPRA, but I think the restrictor is a joke. Specially when some of those cars make 600hp un restricted V8
I think I will keep this one for endurance circuit racing

We have not decided on the 12hour yet. We have been flat out getting ready for the 24hr in Dubai. But I still have the SRiT here so we may run it.
We will be upgrading the SRI T to VX-R spec because they changed the class rules. So we will be racing here in the Championship next year, but the car will be entered as a VX-R

Not 100% sure, but they did great work getting it all fixed up for the Britcar 24hr. Just saw that 4 driveshaft changes were required for that event too and they still came in with an awesome result!
