View Full Version : Gearbox is gone. Replacement under warranty

Hey all,

So my gearbox is gonners! They have to put in a compeltely new one, so I've asked the initial question of "can we use alternate parts to bring down the costs for all parties" They've given a tentative yes, so I'll look up David's threads to see what he did.

They are covering $4000, any extra will be out of my pocket.

Does anyone remember any useful facts or suppliers for this?

Cheers

Todd

i'd say give courtnay sports and autovaux a call tonight and get some quotes for a new box to be shipped over.

i believe he got all his from courtenay sport with a lsd and heavy duty clutch hay but not sure of how much it cost him

Contacting Courtenay Sport tonight as soon as I'm home. I'll just get the price for a whole new box pre-assembled ready to fit by them I think providing it's cost effective.

Well the bearings let go completely, so it's a wonder that it was still driving. In turn this has totally munched R 1 2 5 and 6 and the diff

Mark at Courtenay`s is the man to speak to.
Check with Nigel here also,he may be able to advise.

That's why they updated the bearings, you can't even get the stock ones anymore, and yet, no recall, go figure.

Ok, Mark has been a huge help thus far. Gotta get him some numbers tomorrow from the box and check out the varients.

There's 3 varients of VXR gearbox with slightly different ratios as well it would seem.

We'll see what the outcome of tomorrow is, and Mark will determine if there is a remote possibility that other boxes will marry up to existing engine/fly/drive shafts etc.

If I get a new Holden box, it's looking to be $6,600 so not far off the 7K mark, but it seems that I can get the better parts from the UK for the same amount and possibly less if I can reduce shipping costs!

Interestingly enough Mark and Vauxhall have both said that there are no "parts" for the gearbox, it comes as a complete assembly, that is all. The only replacable one is the LSD. So if David added anything else I suspect it was an uprated clutch+housing and lightened flywheel.

What Box are holden offering though? If it isn't the uprated one whats the point? And I doubt it would be.

I'd be going the lightened fly wheel AND the LSD as well. Get that power to the ground more efficiently.

Good luck Todd.

Mark is correct in the 3 varients, however I believe the 3 M32's with different ratio's are the one for the CDTi, the Corsa VXR and the Astra VXR.

David went all out on his and it included the lsd, uprated cluth etc. If you were to go the lightened flywheel, i'd change the clutch assembly as well, unless you like the metalic clunking sound it will make if you remove the DMF ;)

Davids link here as to what he got, including the sound http://www.opelaus.com/forums/showthread.php?23827-clutch-noise&p=472464&highlight=#post472464

Thanks Rory,

This makes good sense. One thing I've never understood is whether the fly is in the gearbox or if it is on the engine and marries up with the clutch on the geabox? I always assumed the latter? If so then unless this comes in significantly cheaper than Holden pricing (which is a strong possibility) then I need to keep it as close to the $4000 mark for now. So long as the removal of the box and replacement with upgraded clutch and fly can be easily done later, I will stick with the box and internals for now since my clutch and fly are probably not damaged and wouldn't be eligable for warranty replacement.

It's also a case that I've asked if I can source parts myself and use uprated parts to which they've said yes, and Courtenay are happy to draw up the invoice this way to show it is a new replacement gearbox with uprated parts (Even though this is only the LSD and bearings and oils), but I won't be able to start including items that would not be covered under this claim (shame, but that's how it is), besides, this will get the box here quicker than if I let Holden throw it on a cargo ship.

More phone calls to make this morning. Will ask whether the clutch and fly are ok... if they're dead then ten thumbs up, but should have a quote and time frame before the end of the night. Now I just need to arrange finance to do it before claiming back from warranty company.

I would get the gearbox locally lot easier for everyone and less complications if there is a warranty issue with the gearbox. Rory is right if you replace the flywheel you should replace the clutch but been
a srit there is no dmf.
Clutch won't be covered under any warranty.

Yet another victim of the early M32 6 speed bearing failures...

I reckon if we got enough people there could be a good case against Holden for warranty!!!

Why is there a ? in Variante?
The Zaf LEH is Variante 2, and so are both the LERs, so... Same box?

Yeah Clutch and Fly are both fine and don't require replacement. Depending on cost I may be able to get them at the same time, but will probably have to have them shipped separately.

Anyone know dimensions for shipping?

The starter motor bolts up different and i believe the driveshafts are slightly different. Should be able to confirm on EPC as to the box fitted to your car.

Here are (some of) the numbers of the gearbox itself:

M3260397455H2

5518G624
300193851

Holden Genuine Part Number 55569141

If you could look it up Rory that would be awesome!!

(I don't want to cause issues for myself by not having the starter and shafts lining up properly. In retrospect I should probably just maintain the same box as the genuine part number and add the Quaife)

I'm not at home yet, but it's a variant 2, alphacode yj by the looks of it, but i'll have to check to make sure.

Information was taken from half way down this page with the GM part number http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/engines-transmission/399096-problem-m32.html

I'll send ya a pm when i'm home to get your VIN

'Easily' probably isn't the most appropriate word... Definitely worth seeing if you can just pay extra and have it all done at the same time.. It should still work out cheaper than taking out the gearbox twice...

Hehe, I have my VIN recorded on my phone :p

All the best with sorting this out. I hope you're happy with the outcome ;)

If I can fit it in costs I will... But pulling the box out isn't an issue when your cousin owns a Transmission Specialist... :)

Huh? Anyway, the above part number is the new part number for the box. There is an older one (probably the bearing change??) which points to the new one on Holden's system.

Just waiting for a couple of final details before I go ahead with everything!

Thanks Rory.

Just got off the phone to parts departments.

The VXR uses different shafts to the SRiT. Different part numbers, so they are not compatible. since I can install the LSD in the SRiT box, the .11 FDR (in my opinion) is not justifiable for the expence that would be incurred on the drive shafts.

UNEEQ
1st December 2010, 11:59 PM
More on the above, The shafts may be the same even though the part numbers are different (I thought of this but am erring on the side of caution). Just confirming some details first. Once I have everything over here (If I take the chance) and everything fitted I'll confirm facts, until then I'm not willing to guess on anything.

Looks like around $5000 an up to an extra $1500 later on for flywheel, Slave Cyl and LEH Clutch Cover and sprung disc (up to $2000 if I go overkill with the Sachs Cover)

So the 7K rough estimate of Dave's is about right if he upgraded everything as far as possible!
