While trying to tighten the tophat bolts one has snapped clean through the middle. Half of the bolt is still attatched to the manifold and it wont budge. Is there a way of getting it out? Any home remedies?

if there's any part still protudring out the top you can cut into it then use a screwdriver to turn it.
Short of that, a drill bit smaller than the screw, drill out the centre and you can essentially pull the remaining thread out once the core is gone.

I'll try the screwdriver thing. How will the remaining thread come out if the middle is pulled out?

once the core is drilled out, there's only a thin layer of metal left (essentially the thread plus a tiny bit more). It's weak enough to then peel/break out

my fav methods are a good set of vice grips
or drill a hole and hammer in a torx bit

top hat is held by 4 bolts?
u could probably get away with 3 for now

You could always get a set out exyouts or however you spell it. Similar to what Ain said but you drill a hole about 1/2 way in then put the exyout bit in and turn till it grabs then keep going. It's a reverse thread.

Did you buy them from Supercheap? :p

The ones I used to use were when I worked in an engineering factory, cost about $600 for the set ;)

Yeah, screws into the intake manifold but goes through the throttle body first.

Gav, where abouts did it snap, right down near the manifold?

Yeah its right it the middle of the throttle body, so not long enough for me to put a bolt onto it. :(

taking the tb off doesn't expose the thread?

if u can see the thread with the TB off

tried that but vise grips wont grip lol

get some good ones, and get em on tight so it puts teeth marks on the thread
else put a nut on it
and turn it to crack it open a bit

Ok just been back from the garage and found the gasket on the bottom of the throttle body have snapped off. Looks like wear and tear and not a clean snap. Its only rubber. Will they sell those on their own?

nuggz

adding to nuggz's method.

square of the sides of the bolt with a file, then the vice grips get a HEAPS better grip.

Good tip Shay, will remember this next time.

Vice grips' 'teeth' also wear out over time when you compare new to old

If you can, file on a slight angle so it looks more like /\ rather than ||, the straighter you go the more likely you are to just shear the top filed section of the bolt off when you try to twist it due to stress concentration.
