View Full Version : The ECOTEC engine...in my Astra TS

droodles

I'm going to cross my fingers on this one.

Please let the 'TEC' be something related to electronic control of the valves. Just like Honda's VTEC. I know it sounds absurd but cmon. Or should I just get rid of the Astra and go buy something like an Accord Euro right now?

Only engine that's semi similar to a vtec is what I got the z18xer. Ecotec is just a name mate not a variant of extra powerband high revving twin cam crazy screaming jap engine like the vtec. Sorry to burst your dream hahah

To be more accurate, ECOTEC stands for emissions control optimisation technology, and is the name giving to all GM family 1 and family 2 straight 4 engines. as well as the GMH produced 3.8 V6

VTEC is just a fake phenomenon created by honda to fool the drivers into thinking there is a difference in power by forcing the car's induction note to change slightly. :p

a gazillion % correct. on the other hand, that mad jolt in the back when the ECOTEC kicks in at 4500RPM!!!!!!

- is because you've hit the limp home cutoff because your cam sensor is shagged

mate i think the answer to your original question is:
yes - you should buy an Accord Euro

Will do when I get the money. I initially had plans to mod the astra but didn't think it'd be worth it. Oh well, it's a reliable car though.

there's not much i can do to it, maybe a CAI and an exhaust system but that's it. it's not a performance type car, at the end of the day it's an astra.

Disagree.. Turbo astra is a performance car!! You can get some killer figures to weight out of them...

I mean ud say a barina is by no means a performance car.. Go check out mr corsas :)

your 1.8L barina weighs a lot less than his 1.8L astra.....

redbook actually says that they're around the same weight??? weird. other difference is gearbox, astra prob has the wide ratio. but the point was that the engine has a lot of potential from a few little mods. and also the way you drive the car obviously has an effect..

The Misses has the z18xe auto and it is still pretty good still beats vx's ahha

i actually have a lot of respect for the z18xe, if u have the x18xe then dont expect to get too much out of it. but the z18xe is the engine of era that the x16xe was back in it's day. it's a brilliant revvy engine, very well balanced, and still uses the small block so reduces weight.

ask some of the guys that have done a lil work to the z18xe how they go :).

or ask me in a few months when Projekt Corsa goes from stage 1 to stage 2 :D.

Is there actually a thread that says what all these engine types belong too.. I'm getting completely lost with x and z.. I understand the numbers though =).. But to the first poster. i'd go a civic =).

gmonkey
26th May 2010, 10:35 PM
Astra f = c series engines
Astra g = x18xe
Z18xe
Z22se
Z20let
Astra h = z18xe
Z18xer
Z22yh
Z20ler
Z20leh

Might have the ler and let back to front

PrincessPeachey
26th May 2010, 11:01 PM
haha, i love the xer. sooo much fun even in a wagon! but im still pretty happy with my xe.

the front letter of the engine code relates to the emissions standard at the time. can sorta gives an indication of the age of the engine/car but its not completely accurate. c > x > z > a. none of the engines in aus currently have a but the astra j would have i believe. oh and y is generally for diesels.

the letter that follows the number is the engines compression level..

so L is low compression cause they are ussually turbo engines
s is 10-11 or so cant remember
y is 10-12
X is higher compresion think it was 12-14

the z22se and the z22yh are pretty much exactly same engine aswell except the yh has direct injection.. but the z18xe and z18xer are completely different

lithium
27th May 2010, 10:45 AM
how so? i thought the z18xe and x18xer are identical except for variable cam timing and maybe some work untangling the intake manifold
changing an engine from port injected to DI is a bigger change imo

edit: ah never mind, google answers all. and why am i replying to a thread asking about the TEC in ecotec and racing vn commodores :(

it depends on each individual engine afaik. ie a c16xe has a higher compression ratio than a z18xe but they're in the same range of x.

c16xe = 11:1
z18xe = 10.5:1

The ranges are:
g: <= 8.5:1
l: 8.5:1 < 9.0:1
n: 9.0:1 < 9.5:1
s: 9.5:1 < 10.0:1
x: 10.0:1 < 11.5:1
y: >= 11.5:1.

Astra G = y20dth
Astra H = z19dth (z19dt for auto's), z17dth, z13dth (only the 1.9 in aus)
