hi guys. the barina has eventually gone :'( and i need aother car. i work for ford and my dealership also owns a mazda dealership and hyundai and my brother works for holden. so i have a pretty wide choice of cars that i can get really good discount on so im looking for another car, not too bothered if its new or used but the newer the better. something that can have pretty decent power gains with not massivly expensive modifications (cdti with greenbox for example) something that looks good and most importantly it has to be bigger and more sporty and more powerful than the barina.

Hey, you could have a look at my CDTI :) No Green Box though, however the CRD-T box will do nicely me thinks!
With petrol price forecast to go near $2.00 soon I would think twice before buying a high power turbo petrol.

manual or auto. for evos the evo 7 gta are worth around 20-25k. apart from that you gotta be lucky. wait for something good to come along in that price range.

gmonkey
1st May 2010, 01:13 PM
Think evo 7s only came in manual back then...

I don't think an evo is the way to go really... Insurance will be insane for one and masive upkeep on them to keep them going.. If u had to buy a quick Mitsubishi have to get the galant vr4 or legnum vr4 same bigger running gear than an evo just bigger car but.. Think they were 2.5p v6 twin turbo and 206kw from memory.. Can get one sub $20k now

gmonkey, the evo 7s did come in an auto however only in japan. there are a fare few running around aus butt heyr all private imports. The Evo 7 GTA features a 5spd semi automatic box with different sports settings for track, snow and dirt. alot of em fetch between 20-25k but as you said insurance would be a killer. Maybe astra turbo or vxr if you can get one for that money. if your worrying about insurace costs get a 2.2 SRi astra.

adam_92
1st May 2010, 06:50 PM
yeah the sri astra is one of my favourite cars but slightly too expensive around 27k

Your only 18, are you sure you can insure anything you can afford to buy there in SA ???

If so your not going to get anything decent for your budget from what you've listed above that you'd like to get...

Why not just look at all the new cars you can get in that price range and go for something more conservative for now, build up your age/experience and then opt for something better in terms of power/performance down the track...

You'll also cut down your running costs that way and have piece of mind/less expense with a new car warranty :)

Your kidding right :skep:

I think if you were in such a situation, you'd be trying to get out of the fact that 'you were' driving the car at all...

Insurance will be void instantly unless you are a nominated driver of that particular vehicle and if it's a turbo or V8 or that class of vehicle your parents wouldn't be able to get it insured at all if nominating an 18 year old as one of the vehicles drivers, in fact some vehicles are off limits till 21 or even 25 and there's good reasons for that too !

this is good advice.

at 18 why not get something sporty like the 2.2 SRi mentioned, or a previous gen Mazda 3 or SP23. it'll be pokier than a 1.4 Barina, be reasonable to insure and more importantly - help keep you alive until you get a bit older. an EVO is all fun and games until it boosts you off a wet roundabout into a light pole :yikes:

mazda 3 sp23 are a great little car, thats a good choice

keep in mind ANYTHING that you get will be more powerful then a Barina. +1 with Mazda, very fun to drive

gmonkey

yeh i agree with sp23 or sri astra. one cause they wont cost much to insure, two theyre economical (within reason) and three have a bit of get up and go when you put your foot down.

i agree with the mazda
our astra is nice... but the mazda 3 was a VERY close contender for us

still be prepared to pay a bit for insurance though... because they are both classified as sports cars (krissn may be able to concur with me here)... we pay $1100 for the astra because its insured for $25k plus theres me @ 26 and jen @ 25 on the policy, and thats with a discount (coz the calibra and contents insurance is on it)

Well you guys are lucky then your not in Vic.

Other states will eventually catch up - I don't want to change the topic but there's a very good reason why it is that way, look at the road toll accident/death stats and the age group most resposible and how many of those are with certain car types...

I also agree with the Mazda choice by some others above...

With 25k you could actually get yourself a brand new one (if you like that shape) or a recent SP23 sedan would be a top choice to begin with IMO...

If you weren't too concerned about power, I would suggest a brand new Honda VtiL City (bought one last year for my 18 yo kid) and it's a great little 1st car for around 24k drive away...
