Hey guys, just wanting to utilise the minds of many and get some suggestions for cars for mum.
Originally she was looking at getting a golf wagon, put our order in 4 weeks ago and it hasn't even started being made yet, and won't be here until mid september so the order is being cancelled.

Essentially looking to spend around the $40k mark, something like a golf wagon but here's the killer, can't be Japanese (to do with mum's moral standing)

so far the only things I can think of are:
skoda Octavia wagon
Hyundai i30 wagon
Volvo s40 wagon (pushing the budget a tad)
Renault laguna wagon
peugeout 308 touring
any ideas are welcome!

If your mum has an issue with Jap cars then you might want to remove Renault from the list considering the Renault-Nissan Alliance. Depending how thingy she is about it.

is it all jap, or just some?

cos most of the jap brands make really really solid cars...

esp. mazda and honda.

All jap, it's not the car brands themselves, she just refuses to buy anything from japan due to the whole whaling deal

My 2 cents, if she's not in a hurry and like the Golf wagon over anything else, just leave the above order alone and wait for the Golf !!!

Time flies, before you know it, it'll be september and she'll feel like it was 40k well spent if the Golf was her 1st choice ;)

only problem with that is the lease on the current car ends in June, so september isn't really a viable option as it plays with finances something chronic.

go to the dealer check what cars they got on the floor look for a passat wagon and offer 40k flat here and now for the base line + auto (if they got one on the floor :p) same engine as the golf but bigger car, so will feel sluggish compared but will be a nicer car to live with every day id think

if you're looking at the passat's brand new, the diesels might be just a bit out of price range (unless you can do a killer deal at your VW) dealer - otherwise I would definitely go the Octavia.

great value car for what is essentially a Golf GTI under the skin.. make sure you get the MY10 facelifted version, looks heaps better than the older one.

I don't know how much a Renault Koleos is, but I have an X-Trail Diesel with the same engine and drivetrain, and it is an awesome engine, don't know what the auto is like, but the Koleos is available as a 2WD auto diesel. 110kW, 360Nm. Lots of spec, and mum can see a bit more over the traffic.

Sorry for the thread hijack Sooty...

TL, and yes, the clutch was vicious. The first drive in the carpark of the dealer when test driving I stalled it. It settles fine early.

Economy - over 40,000kms I've averaged 7.5l/100km (measured). I'm so happy with it, I've ordered another one as my company cars get changed every 40,000. I'm just waiting for it to arrive - black, TL (now has sat nav/DVD/reverse camera in the dash). Leather, big sunroof, comfy and goes well off road for what it is, apart from the back bumper which is a little long with a low lip and the plastic can get caught on stuff.

The auto on the X-Trail suffers from a de-tuned engine of 110kW/320Nm, with the manual at 127kW/360Nm, and a poorer fuel economy. I haven't found the fuel rail yet to see if the greenbox from the Astra fits, I'll have a look on the new one when it arrives.
